  • A detailed, hands-on, unsponsored review of the unusual Fujifilm X100VI digital camera.
    The camera was on loan from Fujifilm Canada and has been returned. I do not work for, and was not paid by Fujifilm. They did not see the script or video before posting.
    My sole revenue for this channel comes from Google AdWords and kind contributions from viewers like you.

    Hi Maarten, great to see you again. I’ve been on the waiting list here in UK since March and each month receive an email from supplier saying no news yet. Whilst waiting I bought a used 100V a few days ago to enjoy the unique features while it is still summer. By the time the VI arrives I should be quite conversant with the settings and all set to hit the ground running. Thanks for a lovely review as always.

      Right, my son-in-law is also on what seems to be a long wait list. I've reached out to Fujifilm Canada to check on the status, and to spare your the corporate spin, the X100 VI's sales and order are far exceeding even their most optimistic projections. They continue to ramp up production and are committed to delivering cameras to everone who wants one.

      An excellent review and slightly different from others I have seen. I’m also in the UK and ordered mine in early April and finally arrived June 1st, although I did order from two separate stores. Hope it comes soon, but we’ll worth the wait and you may find a few differences in the menu. 🖖

    What a great review! A no nonsense, to the point analysis of the X100Vi, looking at the features and design elements that people use most often. I've been wanting to replace my X Pro 1 for a while now. The X100vi may be the camera I've wanted and waited to get. Thanks for making this review.

    Interesting video about a powerful and versatile camera. In many ways the Fuji X100 VI could be described as the "Affordable Leica Q3 alternative".
    As a matter of interest, the guys at the old DPReview channel (Chris Nicholls & Jordan Drake) shot at least one entire episode on the previous Fuji X100 V and the video looked great.
    So the Fuji X100 VI could very easily be the only camera for some people (dependant upon what the owner / user wanted to shoot / create with the camera).
    Please keep shooting your very interesting and informative videos !!

    Great review as always. I especially enjoyed your pronunciation of “Reala Ace” versus other reviewers. I suspect yours is the correct pronunciation. I completely agree with your take. Martin, great video - I've had mine for a few months now and love it. It's my everyday carry and it's always with me. One point you misspoke about was the camera not detecting the optional WCL and TCL lenses. The early versions of these were not the II version, and did not have auto detection. The II version like the one you were using, have a small magnet near the thread which let the camera know which adapter lens you are using, WCL or TCL. The X100VI automaticly knows which lens you added and it's noted on the display and viewfinder. One other thing I think you missed was the digital teleconverter that changes the standard lens to 50mm and 70mm. This of course does lower the megapixel for those shots to Medium for the 50mm digital zoom, and to Small for the 70mm digital zoom. The raw image for these digital zoom levels is as normal - the change is to the jpeg output. As always, well done!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  3 дні тому +1

      Thanks for your kind words - and thanks for pointing that out. The digital teleconvertordoes not seem all that useful to me, so I passed over the opportunity to comment on that. Nice to hear that you've found value in this setting.

    Great review Maarten, i was lucky enough to get this camera just a month after the release date and i love it. I have shot with Fujifilm before but i wanted something small and compact as i am mainly a street and city architecture photographer and this suits me fine. You are so right about the fixed lens it makes you think about your shots more and the nd filter and IBS can help you get some creative motion blur shots.

    Thanks for the great review Maarten! My question: Although there are so many features on the camera I personally will struggle for years learning them all. So I plan on using the My Menu screen and dialing in all my exposures manually. And i will also try to test out and use Auto that you reported as being very well balanced between the highlights and shadows. Would those two options be a good strategy in your opinion, just for starters? Thanks for any feedback you can provide. je
    PS> All of your sample photos were top notch!!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 дні тому +2

    Excellent review. I like your style. In response to your opinion that certain features of the camera seem out of place, I'm all for including such features on a "just in case" scenario. It doesn't hurt to include niche capabilities. Heck, pile them all in there. They can be ignored with no loss. They are available just in case I need them. I may not intend to shoot video, but I like having the ability just in case. And with modern microprocessor wealth, we are better off adjusting our menu expectations to the camera's hierarchy, rather than limiting them to our preconceived notions.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 днів тому

      Thanks for your kind words. In general, I agree - which is why I suggested that a switch or menu setting to clean up the menus for purists might be of value to simplify the camera and embrace more of the retro feel.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  2 дні тому

      If that's your need, then it's likely best to use the small EVF inset in the optical viewfinder which provides an expanded view of a selectable area. Otherwise, rely on the autofocus (works well, particularly with face/eye), or use the EVF when focussing with one of the many manual focus assists. Thanks for your kind words.

    I wonder what your impression of the new Leica D-Lux 8 will be? It has an almost identical price to the X100 MkVI. A Leica Q style menu. Zoom lens with aperture ring and manual controls. An older M4/3 sensor of which only 17MP are used out of 22. Both Fuji and Leica are sold out with a long waiting list, which I am beginning to suspect may be a marketing tool in itself.
    I’m not in the market for either, owning a D-Lux 7 and a Q2 plus a few others for pure enjoyment, so it’s just not worth me adding similar cameras.

    Thanks for the interesting review! I think for most people interchangeable lens cameras are a better and more versatile choice (X-S20, X-T50 & X-T5), while the X100 VI is nice for casual street photography. With the current hype around this camera, it has become more a fashion statement, and I think it will lead to buyer's remorse for a significant number of buyers who do not fully realise the limitations of having a fixed focal length camera in advance of making a purchase. It is a specific tool in my opinion, not an all-rounder, and I would personally never purchase one as my only camera. It is a very nice camera for (experienced) photographers who really know what they are purchasing, and likely buy it as a fun-camera on the side to spice things up, next to other camera gear.

    I don't use this camera but I do think it's a great camera and it's almost like a fashion accessory camera. It has that vibe that people search for and if that gets them into Photography that's a good thing and I think they've improved the auto focus on many of the series cameras. I own the XT5 and also a GFX cam so I really have no inkling to buy this camera but if I had a spare couple of grand lying around, maybe I would buy this camera in the futureWhen it comes down in price and this some available but I think it's a great camera and the sales on this camera indicate this is the type of camera people want people complain about the menus in FujiFilm cameras but my goodness I found them fairly easy to navigate at least what they are called in the menu is easy to understand. If you go into a canon or a Sony the terminology it's like it's in Chinese for me but that's just my brain once again thank you for the review. I do think this is an amazing camera and if it gets out there and people are taking photos that's a good thing.
