As a 31 year old Registered Nurse, I took a job in Baltimore, Maryland for nine months as a travelling nurse from Canada. Once I arrived in Baltimore, there was a one bedroom apartment waiting for me and set up by the travelling nurse company. Well, I needed a haircut before I started work. That was my plan to get a haircut in the states. So I basically looked at the Yellow Pages and just recognized that one of these haircut places was on a street that I recognized so I went there. Well, I walk in and I’m the only white person in the shop. Everyone was looking at me everyone I mean everyone it was a little uncomfortable at first but then I thought I just need a haircut. Well, it was the best haircut I’ve ever had in my life these women. This woman took me under her wing and literally I felt like a queen when I left that shop. Literally, the best haircut I’ve ever had even To this day and I’m now 62 never forget that experience I will never forget it

I would agree. But I always preferred black barbers when I wore fades. Problem was I had 3 different black barbers refuse to cut my hair. And several more treat me as if I was out of place by entering their shop. I was taught growing up to ignore skin color. But don’t be amazed at how many racist happen to be black.

@@brandonboykin8349 I doubt the reason for Black Barbers refusing to take you on as a client is because of Racism. The hesitation could of been that they didn't want to be responsible for you not being satisfied with the cut or maybe weren't use to styling straight hair. You didn't specify if the Barbers were old are young because experience does matters assuming your story is true. Some White people who are Racist themselves need a reason to claim Black people are just as Racist towards them as not to be judge ! 🤔

I accidentally walked into a black barbershop one time. I was pulling off my motorcycle helmet and my eyes were adjusting to the light - and everyone was staring at me. I said 'what's up?' and they went right back to talking. Got one of the greatest haircuts and shaves I've ever had - actually got several compliments! The only problem with that shop is that it stays so busy - people bring their whole families to get cuts, and it's hard to squeeze in one more person.

My friend said, “You go first.” The man turned me opposite the mirror during the whole cut. Then brushed me off and turned me toward the mirror. When the barber was done he said, “Hope you like it. I’ve never cut a white boy’s hair before.” By today’s style it would have been legit. Back in the 90s? When the look was like what you see on the show Friends? I looked like the basketball player Darin Williams. Got so much shade! Haha The man said to my friend, “You next?” And my friend was like, “Nah..I’m good.” Haha

For example, hair bumps can happen to folks who are not black, but people with extremely curly hair are more prone to them. I've heard white stylists say this too. The best ones know how to do everyone’s hair and the ones that I've found were recommended to me by other people of color who did have bad experiences with the way their hair was done. No need to be sensitive about race. Just because you want to ignore differences, doesn't mean they aren't there, but mental maturity would call for being able to acknowledge differences and still be ok with them.

I've been turned away from male barber shops for having long hair and they didn't want to deal w/ it. You are really an artist in your trade. The kid said he wanted more off and not in his face but you knew better than to start with that until he saw it. You can always take a little more off but can't put it back on! You said, " I just..." quite a bit which, I think, shows how humble you are about your skills. That moment of "I just" is where you instinctively know what to do that can't be taught but learned by a LOT of practice and intuition. You definitely have a gift!
This doesn't even begin to talk about how much one haircut can do to bridge a gap to create some unity in the community. I don't consider myself old but even 35 or 40 years ago, it didn't even occur to me that I, as a white kid, could go to a black barber. Back in the day when I had hair, it would have been an honor to go to an artist like you. Keep up the great work!

I am usually the only white person in the shop and almost always the only female, but all make me feel welcome when I enter. He just about has me talked into a short cut for summer next year. A new haircut as a kid made me feel invincible and for a moment the happiest person on earth. I’m glad you could feel that love. Once it’s at the length you want it cut and crossed referenced any stragglers, I repeat the process and cut the tips at an angle (depending on how defined you want the texture). It hasn’t failed me yet but there are great videos out there on performing texture cuts. Keep up the great work man bro 🙏🏼🤙🏼👊🏼

Chi products make good oils also something Blackseed ciil that is lite creamy gel type product…. Sorry I can’t remember the names exactly…..getting old sucks but check them out if you get a chance

Beautiful timeless haircut. An ancient artform-- sculpting hair. Really enjoyed this video. You cut according to texture of hair and form of this young man’s head. Also you are humble as you say you are always learning!

Looks so good. Love the modern well cut look. I am an older white woman and admire how black men and women take such great care of their hair and skin. I often watch UA-cam videos of black women and girls getting their hair done. Great Job!❤ You have taken his look from a little boy to a young man.

That's odd cause when I went to school back in the late 50s that was one of the 1st things I was taught, even though I already knew how since my step-dad was a barber for many years, why I took up cosmetology.

Right. We didn’t learn men’s hair where I went to cosmetology school either. I had to teach myself and learn from others. Thank god for helpful people.
