I like how Tiar Wheatle held him responsible for his past words without beating him up about it. So gracious or generous. He seems sincere, this is seldom seen. Great interview!

If people like this dude aren't given grace for 1: changing his mind (but more importantly) 2: actively working to reverse the damage/harm his self-professed ignorance caused then 1: others who've undergone similar processes won't admit their flaws, faults, and wrongs and 2) (even if on a more minor scale) we all deserve another chance if we've shown true contrition and want to help make things right. 'Grats Tom and APTN for this interview.

When I was four, my family moved to California to take advantage of their free colleges. When I returned to Canada at 44, I was shocked by the racism. Driving a taxi in Vancouver was a true eye opener. Why would anybody hate a Native?
    Go figure.

The main thing the indigenous people have been marginalized and excluded from is inventing, creating and paying.

When you wake up each day and it becomes all about race you need to ask yourself who is really racist

I'm pretty sure I saw social media where he was saying that when he STARTED the book. Its canada, books like this dont exactly sell enough copies to even make writing them worthwhile for hte money. And likely mainstream media will completely ignore it.

Great interview. Great balance from Ms. Wheatle. I hope this journalist finally getting educated is an example for others in a time where most are reactionary and dig in.

We grew up in a society and school system, where until the TRC came put to light things, we were ALL misinformed, and doctrinated that "white" is the standard and baseline as a hangover from "White Canada" policy. People used to ask my Metis mother who passed for white, "What breed is she?" while pointing to me. My mother was ashamed of the questions and eventually told people that I was adopted. Only in the last decade, have I been able to heal from internalized racism.
I am very grateful for journalists who've seen the world through a systemic baseline of "whiteness" to be able to acknowledge a broadening of worldviews. Thank you, Mr. Brodbeck. You can't take back old words, but new words become more powerful in light of healing and change...and its a process for all of us.

White is only the baseline standard for those that create, invent and pay.

I’m glad he’s grown some but if he can’t see he was a racist than he’s not done enough healing or learning. Not enough to write a book for his profit.

I was scanning the comments for this one. Yes, I love how Tiar held him accountable with surgical precision. I can see he is beginning on a path, but when he showed he couldn't accept he was racist at that point,it shows me he hasn't yet found the root of why he was being racist in the first place. He's heading there, and its a good thing for Tiar to show us what that messy leg of the journey looks like, (she was wonderful!), but he'll have to commit to more & lifelong effort, whether his apology is accepted or not. He's got to do that for himself.

There's a school of, um, we'll call it 'thought' that posits admitting one was wrong is 'a sign of weakness'. Doubling down when _others_ know you're wrong, on the other hand, signals an unwillingness to learn or grow, some conceit of one's own inherent perfection.
