  • A little bit of the Rabi islander's backstory (including an interview with Kaako Nabong) and then the entire 22-minute music and dance performance in Savusavu, Vanua Levu, Fiji on July 24, 2015.
The Banabans are known as the "Forgotten people of the Pacific" because they have suffered from one of the most horrific environmental disasters on the planet... their home has literally been destroyed by phosphate mining and the diaspora of these dispossessed people brought them to Rabi (pronounced Rambi) island, at the east coast of Vanua Levu, near Taveuni island. The history of the Banaban people is here: www.banaban.com/index.html

Thank you for this! I was born in the Fiji Islands (father is Indo-Fijian) and at the age of 1 my family moved to the Solomon Islands where my family of Kiribati descent live. Now I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. My mothers family was migrated similar to these I-Kiribati people, except to the Solomon Islands. Being both I-Kiribati and Fijian... it was really great to see another set of islanders who are also I-Kiribati and Fijian. Thanks for making such a great video! =)

Fiji is a diverse nation. The Banaba people of Rabi are Micronesian with a distinct language and culture. Not far from them are the people of Kioa who have their own distinct language and culture. The Rotuman people further north are quite different again in culture and language although they share the same happy spirit . Within the iTaukei (Fijian) people group there are again numerous dialects and customs. The Indo Fijians came to Fiji in the 1800's brought to Fiji by the British.
I have been to Banaba 'gatherings.' Their enthusiasm and happiness is quite contagious and you will find yourself swept up in the revelry. Unlike some western societies they do not need alcohol to have a good time.

In 1971 the Banabans sued the British government for a greater share of royalties from phosphate mining and compensation for the island’s environmental devastation. They were awarded a 50 percent stake in phosphate export revenues in 1973. That income soon evaporated with the depletion of the island’s phosphate reserves, however, and in 1981 the community agreed to Britain’s offer of a one-time trust payment of $10 million (Australian) in return for the abandonment of further litigation.

No. They migrated from Banaba to Fiji in 1945 due to the British Phosphate Commission (BPC). The BPC shipped my ancestors to Rabi, Fiji so that they could mine away our land due to the rich amount of guano phosphate that was found on our island Banaba. Banaba had lost their native language because missionaries that had sailed all across the pacific island to spread the news of God/Jesus and to also make each island's Bible. Missionaries thought that if they taught the Banabans Kiribati instead of having to learn the Banaban language and make a whole new bible it’d be easier and more ‘efficient’ but now that we’ve lost our language kiribati people claim the ‘Banabans’ to be part of Kiribati because we don’t have our own language. So j to clarify our ancestors aren’t from Kiribati, they’re from Banaba
