Didn't the Captain Planet show have a kid die from drugs?
The dude should definitely be asked to do something for Adult Swim. All his work is something ripped straight out of there and this time he can *really* set loose. It's perfect.

The moment you mentioned Popee the Performer I told myself "NOW it all makes sense" 😂 The creator really has a way of making fucked up kids' shows, doesn't he
The funny part was me having a chill time with a friend outside, with the sun setting and birds chirping, only to come back in my appartment to see a cgi character get shot!😂

i adore PTP but have never seen this one before! masuda is an absolute god when it comes to surreal humor and slapstick, seeing saber's reaction to the chaos is amazing lol. also, funny herself is cuuuuuuute
did you know ryuji's wife actually drew some undertale fanart back when the game was new? apparently toby fox is a big fan, so mrs. masuda drew sans and popee hanging out!
I saw this one Fanganronpa game where Popee ended up winning against everyone else (including Sans) because that mfer wouldn't stay dead. It was something I like to call a "chaos fanfic": nothing has to make sense. Even Monokuma said something along the lines of "how many times have you died at this point?!" with Popee simply responding with both his deaths in the actual show and the ones in this chaos fanfic.

Sex is more taboo than violence
Because japan got stricter with tv rules
Last straw situation. Everyone says it is because violence is more taboo, but not in Japan.
I think their response came from him breaking the rules again.
@@SergioLeonardoCornejo Unless we got a statement from the TV station owners themselves, it's all speculation. Sometimes it seems violence is more taboo in Japan (just look at how the Japanese version of Resident Evil VII censored the decapitated head on the fridge, or how the blood in Danganronpa was colored pink for censorship purposes and it just became part of its identity), sometimes it doesn't.
@@arturoaguilar6002 it depends on the variety of violence. Limb loss/decapitation is considered a no-go, to the point a lot of newer dbz stuff gives future Gohan his arm back, but violence as comedy/slapstick tends to get a pass.
My guess is the sex stuff, considering this show has it but popee did not. Japan tends to let 'lewdness' slide when played for comedy, but blatant sexual reference (as opposed to tropes like the dirty old man) is usually forbidden (for children's media), no matter how funny.

"Mr. Stain on Junk Alley" is completely different. It's more calm and, compared to PTP or Funny Pets, it's charm is less about very violent slapstick and more about pretty emotional moments, especially the finale. The first half is about silly and a little weird shenanigans of a homeless man and his cat friend, but it quickly turns into a bunch of pretty heartwarming stories. It's really worth a watch.
I lost it when he mentioned that show! I watched it years ago and was fascinated by it!

sex more taboo than violence ig
@@js8qp2pwisos that’s exactly why
@@js8qp2pwisos not in Japan though. The question is correct. But maybe it is because mixing both is actually a huge taboo.
@@SergioLeonardoCornejo mixing sex and violence is just the framework for 80% of media lol
I wouldn't be surprised if it's because it was a bigger production overall. Having a pretty weird low-budget thing with dark humor and adult subject matter is fine, but when you have more money involved people tend to pay more attention. And that means you're more open to criticism for all the things that make the project different and unique.

My second favorite show 😁🤳
I don't understand how this show doesnt have a fandom like popee
Its way lesser known, since Popee was more popular and likeable
Popee pretty much blew up in 2017 than for whatever reason it died off than it blew up back again in 2020 I remember being a fan of there show in 2017 for literally only 2 weeks. The fandom is dead now but Popee is well known because of tiktok in 2020 and I’m sure back in 2017 some popular UA-camr made a review on Popee the performer so that’s how it blew up back than. But this show right here isn’t well known but she’s basically the female version of Popee lol
Another really wild animated show I really recommend you check out is Xavier: Renegade Angel. It's one of my favorite shows, not only because of how extremely wacky it can get at times, but also because it makes genuinely great use of fast-paced comedy at all times during the show. It took me multiple viewings to catch all of the jokes, not because they were bad, in fact they are all very funny to me, but because they come in such quick unrelenting succession, often through wordplay, it is nearly impossible to understand everything going on. The show will completely change subjects on a whim, while making use of incredibly wild visuals, which means it requires your full attention to be followed without getting lost. While that sounds bad, I find the show embraces this craziness quite well, and generally ends up being incredibly fun despite the chaos. Since its structure is practically non-linear, most of the entertainment is derived or from the craziness of the show itself, or its quick quippy comedy, which it achieves quite well, especially through dark and relatively edgy humor. Overall, funny show 10/10
So corona is the “Kenny McKormic” of the group 9:13
I find it amazing how this Ryuuji Masuda guy just busts into his producer’s office with any new idea he has for these “children” shows, fills them with violent and dirty jokes, gets them greenlit, and nobody says anything about it whatsoever.
Makes me wonder if there's a Japanese equivalent to Standards & Practices.
@@michaelstrong5383 There is one, but they don't intervene as often, if at all. Japan's version of S&P is far more relaxed in comparison to the US's. Not even Canada's S&P is as lax as Japan's.
Popee seems like one of those lightning in a bottle circumstances where everything lined up with the right people at the right time, and any attempt to recreate it feels like a lesser version. Though, I hear Mr. Stain on Junk Alley is good too because it does it’s own thing, I haven’t seen it but I can’t wait for Saber to talk about it.
I actually prefer this one
Seeing as it’s canonically in australia, I think it’s all pretty accurate apart from the guns 8/10
I haven't watched this series except what's been shown but I gotta say the comedy, in terms of randomness, feels so similar to a series I once read called Dr. Slump, it's by Akira Toriyama the same dude who did Dragon Ball and has its own anime series I believe. Even if Saber doesn't do a video on it I feel like he'd have an absolute blast watching it lmao
19:20 I think what makes this even better/worse is that Moon and Sun were classified as her PETS-
Take that in ANY way you want X’DDDD

This isn't exactly a kids network just because of the name. The station played shows directed towards adults and more child like stuff. It was just an anime station in general
but the anime cg was still childish, Japanese children tend to be less sensitive
I really like the world in this show. According to the story from the website (which can only be accessed through internet archive. Sadly, some of the pictures didn't make it) Funny's house is adjacent to a bunch of ruins in the area around it is a national park which was originally her grandfather's, but was difficult to maintain so it was put under the control of the government along with the ruins.
Looking at all the background objects in the sceneries, there's so much story to tell. It's sad that we never got a chance to hear or see more about this world.
FUNNY PETS LORE CONFIRMED?!
8:55 Wait a second...
i love how corona's role in this show is the equivalent of kenny's in the first few seasons of south park.
I was thinking of this show is like dialogue free aqua teen hunger force. Because the characters died in episodes of that show a lot
My second favorite show is sp 😁😁😁
Is it possible the name was a mistranslation and they actually meant "Funny's pets" as opposed to it being 'Funny Pets'? Especially because of the kink nature of some of the scene and in lieu of the fact that it's about aliens who are her pets I think it makes more sense.
Great video as usual
It was called Funny Pets in Japan too, and the creator himself has said he's not that good with English so it could definitely have been a mistranslation

To be honest anything can be turned into a kid's show.
K-on was a cute, innocent anime yet the manga was straight up R-rated!
Coming up next: Insane Clown Posse's Karn-evil 4 Kidz!
4kids one piece
In Germany there are shows with episodes that range from 6 to 12.
Imagine if Big Mouth was turned into a kid's show.
There are actually a few female characters in Popee! There’s an episode where Papi goes through a mirror portal and (most of) the cast meets alternate versions of themselves.(Though, they were in one episode, so it’s debatable if they count)
Another great video Saber!
Apparently popee has a little sister too
@@piss7610 Indeed, her name is Marifa Paraphone.
13:58 WHAT DA HELL IS THAT
Saberspark: Funny can also be somewhat selfish and cruel, but nowhere near the same degree as Popee
Me:😐 ... Did you skip over the episode where Funny emotionally manipulated Crescent into "off" everyone with random objects for her own amusement. Then when crescent tried to stop her by throwing a knife at her it's bounced back at him and "offed" himself. Funny then proceed to spank his LIFELESS CORPSE not because he tried to kill her but because she didn't like him throwing knives.
Me: The woman pretty much stands on the same pedestal as the clown, if not a little higher.
Uki, i binged Funny Pets here is what i've learned, the director's brutal slapstick is still there but, it got toned down in favor for unpreditable storytelling, however like Saber said, the story are all over the places due to unpredictable direction of the story, it will make you felt questionably aimless while your neuron is activated by 2 pairs of Jigglypuffs.
In short, despite of the cons of the storytelling if you want something chaotic that could messed up your little Simian brain, then Funny Pets is a total go 2.
I'm a big fan of Popee and Ryuji Masuda's work as a whole. I just feel like there's a lot to be learned from more obscure Japanese media. I would love to see saberspark talk about Gregory Horror Show or Pecola
Hell yeah Gregory

More like a robot chicken wannabe
I can see two main reasons this show is underrated
Talk about "celestial bodies..."
15:30 - if I remember right, there was a hot air balloon that had a hole in it but it didn't pop. Still life threatening though and the father and kids made it out safely.
So what I'm saying is it's less dangerous than what the cartoon showed.
Then again I didn't look up any unfortunate events where the fire was too strong or the gas was extra flammable.
This isnt a kids show.
but it would make a good Adult Swim show
It's the opposite of K-on (it's rated 14+ but feels like a kids show)

I love surreal art, so I love shows like this. This show, Ren and Stimpy, Courage the Cowardly Dog.
Either you get it, or you don't get it. 😁
I haven't seen Funny Pets yet. I've only seen Popee the Performer & Mr. Stain so far. Mr. Stain isn't nearly as chaotic, but it's still a VERY surreal series to watch. It mostly goes between surreal comedy, dark comedy, & (surprisingly) surreal horror at times! You'd have to watch Mr. Stain yourself to see what I mean! It manages to be legitimately CREEPY at times! Naturally, Mr. Stain also runs on negative continuity much like both Popee the Performer & Funny Pets.
Finally glad to see one of ryuji masuda’s lesser known works get attention. While funny pets is similar to popee the performer, it’s enjoyable in its own way.
The most unnerving thing about this is that Funny looks like some GameCube-era Super Mario sports spinoff original character

Legitimately thought Mr Stain on Junk Alley was some sort of odd fever dream I had when I was a kid. Had no clue that not only was it real, but it was created by this absolute mad lad. Thank you Saber for bringing back a core memory.
Mr Stain on Junk Alley is still one of my very favorite pieces of animation. It's so bizarre and oscillates between being relatively kid-friendly, to watching a police officer physically crush a child's soul. It is amazing!
