    Thank you for your video. For those who are unaware, the name Nephrite is derived from the Latin name Lapis Nephriticus which means stone for the kidney. Its Spanish name is piedra de ijada which gave rise to the name Jadeite. In olden days some cultures believed that jadeite or nephrite could alleviate pain from the kidneys. It was not until 1863 that French mineralogist Augustin Alexis Damour identified the differences between Jadeite from Nephrite as two separate minerals. The Maori in New Zealand used Nephrite which they call Pounamu to make adzes called toki, war clubs called mere and amulets called hei tiki and hei matau.

    Hi Jordan... I'm using google translate. The discussion about jade is really interesting. My suggestion is that you can create specific content about Nephrite Jade, especially the unique part of Nephrite Jade, namely the cat's eye effect. It is quite rare to find and when properly polished can rival Jadeite gems.

    I'm curious to know more about Nephrite!
    I understand that nephrite is far more common than jadeite, so finding real type A nephrite generally shouldn't be difficult, but I'm really interested in Chinese nephrite, specifically the hetian "mutton fat" white Nephrite. Are there certain reputable sites I should look on? What kind of price tag is realistic for such pieces?
    Thanks!

    I'm a bit interested about nefrite jade since I visited a nefrite jade mosque in Aceh Province - Indonesia. They found that huge jade (approximately 20 tons) and decide to carve the jade to become tiles for the mosque. That was so beautiful building, and somehow I felt fresh and calmy inside the building. Then I was thinking and start to go browsing, how much it cost for a gemstone made from that jade 🤔

    There is so many mix information. What is the refractory ibdex for nephrite and jadeite. My piece jade i thought it was dyed quartz but it is 1.62. And quartz is around 1.5 so my local jeweler thinks its jadeite. However. Some sources say jadeite is 1.66 and nephriye is 1.60 to 1.62 however, the jeweler said it doesnt look like nephrite. So im confused haha so can a RI of 1.62 be jadeite?

    about naming gemstones.
    !! Here is a GENUINE QUARTSITE JOKE I wrote myself there (desert Garden gameshow) a few months ago with the help of mineralogy veterans
    we passed around a newly discovered mineral I found completely unlisted anywhere!!
    after further examination, crazy miracles started happening to anyone who touched it.
    so I gave it the name !!
    the name of the stone with the most magical and medical vibration and luck charm:
    ''Bulshanite'' !!!!!
    and the exotic inclusion within ,,I named ''Bulsitite'' if u still didn't get the joke
    later a proper gemologist identified it as a Leavarite as in ''leave it right where u found it ""🤦‍♂🤣

    Geologist here: I wouldn’t say jadeite is “extremely rare” (I can name quite a few minerals that are much MUCH more rare) but I would say it is definitely rare geologically. Also if you know about metamorphic petrology, it’s not really a wonder that jadeite forms at all, especially considering the environments that jadeite form in.
    Geochemically, albite plagioclase (a kind of feldspar) is a “fusion” of jadeite and quartz; Albite is NaAlSi3O8, quartz is SiO2, and jadeite is NaAlSi2O6. Jadeite tends to form in upper blueschist to eclogite facies, where plagioclase in general is unstable. In that sort of very high pressure environment, a plagioclase’s crystal lattice is essentially “crushed out” and separated into quartz and pyroxene (jadeite or omphacite).
    Oh, there’s also purple jadeite from Turkey, though apparently that material is not pure jadeite.

    • @JewelsoftheTrade
      @JewelsoftheTrade  2 місяці тому

      Thank you for your comment! I should clarify by saying that gem quality jadeite jade (not single crystal jadeite) is extremely rare. While jadeite can be found in other polycrystalline materials, it takes more than the presence of jadeite to constitute a “jade.” Additionally, very little jadeite jade (jadeite jade by nature is polycrystalline) found is gem-grade, and of the gem-grade quality less than 1% is considered “fine.” Please note that gemology is not the same as geology or mineralogy, and is a system created for the jewelry consumer. You might be interested in my video “Jade for Gemologists - Fei Cui Explained.” Given your background, I think you’ll find it more interesting! 😊

    • @JewelsoftheTrade
      @JewelsoftheTrade  2 місяці тому

      “Rare” is subjective of course, so I definitely see where you’re coming from. I certainly agree that there are materials more rare than jade. But gem-grade jadeite jade is undeniably more rare than commodities such as copper, gold, gem-grade diamonds, gem-grade amethyst and a number of other gem-grade colored gemstones, particularly nephrite jade which is comparatively far more abundant than jadeite jade.

    • @JewelsoftheTrade
      @JewelsoftheTrade  2 місяці тому

      As for purple jadeite rock (known as Turkish Purple Jade in the trade), we don’t gemologically consider it a jade because of it’s high quartz content. We don’t consider Maw Sit Sit a “jade” either (at least not in the US, in a gemological context) even though it has kosmochlor/jadeite in it. It’s a very cool stone, but it’s misleading for a seller to represent it as jade. You might enjoy our Discord! There’s a link in the description. I don’t have any videos on Turkish Purple Jade, but it’s part of the realm of topics that we discuss in the JOTT Discord server.

      Bowenite is a jade simulant. Still a beautiful stone, it’s unfortunately not as durable as jade. I think we mention bowenite in our video “Don’t Buy Fake Jade” because some people sell it as “jade” without disclosure.

    • @TheKalihiMan
      @TheKalihiMan Рік тому +1

      Bowenite is a variety of serpentinite rock related to nephrite, though not as hard or durable and gemologically speaking cannot be referred to as jade. However, it is important to remember that more traditional gem classifications do not always align perfectly with modern gemology. A variety of bowenite in New Zealand known as tangiwai is still considered by Māori and other New Zealanders to be a type of pounamu, or greenstone. Similarly, the term fei cui in China does not only refer to pure jadeite, but can legally refer to any stone containing jadeite, omphacite, or kosmochlor or any combination thereof in varying compositions.
