- Prince Rupert, British Columbia is one of the province's most underrated and undercelebrated towns. Located in a picture-perfect setting on the northwestern coast of British Columbia, less than 50 km from Alaska, this is the Pacific Coast at its finest. Towering snow-capped peaks juxtapose against the brilliant blue ocean, with mighty bald eagles keeping watch for the salmon that are abundant in these waters.
After a short 2.5 hour train ride from Terrace, I arrived in this town of 12,200 people to spend a full day exploring town before catching my overnight ferry southbound through the Inside Passage (next vlog!). While in Prince Rupert, I made the obligatory visit to the Cow Bay Waterfront district, where I stopped at the local Cowpuccino's cafe for a morning pick-me-up, had a delicious halibut lunch at Dolly's Fish Market (the local specialty), and admired its many parks and totem poles, before heading to Fairview Bay.

Hey, it's beautiful town no pollution should have visited in the summer we have lots of hiking trails, wildlife , deer around town they even use the crosswalk to cross the street

My family and I liveed there up until February 1983, when my dad worked at the pulp mill, which was eventually shut down and sold to some company in NZ. I was 6, so the only thing I remember were the docks, where we'd go fishing, and the annunctiation school.
I'm glad I was able to bring back some memories for you! That's impressive to recall those experiences from age 6. It's a beautiful part of Canada.

I visited this place in 2008. Bought some crabs from the fishers. $4 CAD/one, we bought 20, then cook by ourselves at motel. Very happy memories

My mother-in-law used to live in the Highliner. My wife and I were living there when it was being built. It's sad what's happened to the city. Those sidewalks, especially on 3rd Avenue, used to be super crowded most of the time, especially on Friday nights and all day Saturday. The government really hurt the town by allowing all the cannery industry to move to Seattle and China, then moving most government services to Terrace.

Ah I miss my hometown. I miss the rain a lot and the fresh seafood. Lived insanely close to Rushbrook and still go back at least once a year to visit friends and family

@Drifter Dave much nicer in summer! Lot more to do (hikes) and totem poles all over the city. Everything is opened up so can go see museum and catch bus out to go see North Pacific Cannery in Port Ed too
We were there last summer found a little bakery that had the best sugar free dessert s we have ever found anywhere looking forward to going back

You were sooo close to the sunken gardens, right behind the courthouse and a real gem. Even pretty to look at that time of year. Also the longhouse if you kept going past the totem pole.
That's unfortunate! Honestly, with the tourism office closed during Covid, I did the best I could with the little information that I had. Prince Rupert is definitely a place I'd love to return to. The only benefit of travelling during the pandemic was that prices were ridiculously low - but I'd still love to return someday!

@@DrifterDave Dave, The museum is actually a jewel loaded with a variety of exhibits, and it also hosts art exhibits. There are many historical artifacts and the displays are beautifully done. Don't miss it if you come this way again.

Hi Drifter Dave. I commented how I want to go the OPPOSITE direction of your BC Ferries excursion: I want to go from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. I'm going to Prince George, then back to Vancouver BC. I remember looking on Priceline, to see what was available in Prince Rupert. I did NOT know that you had Edward Jones in Canada! I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Japanese-Americanium, too. I can sleep in the car, and I can use my memberships at Anytime Fitness to shower and shave. That's what I plan to do in Prince Geroge.

Hah I'm a guy from Russia and I've been to this merry town a couple of years ago, unfortunately I didn't have a chance to have a shore leave due to covid, but what I remember is the remarkable view which opens when you call in this port. Also I was said that it pisses rain like 300 of 365 days a year lol but there live the nicest people I've ever encountered. Thanks Mike from the wooden pellets terminal really helped me a lot there

3:50 UGGGH!! As a Japanese-Americanium, seeing that Vancouver BC (my favorite visiting place since 2012) is 950 MILES from Prince Rupert, give me second thoughts about doing this trip! Then again, I DO know that it will take about 7-8 hours from Prince Rupert to Prince George (which is THE highway I want to travel and see). And, in 2016 (the last GOOD year of my life, and I thought that I was going to pass away in 2021 at age 48), I went to Lethbridge, Alberta, through Calgary, Banff, and back to Vancouver, proving that I can drive 10 hours.
It will take you around 90 minutes on the ferry, followed by a 5 hour drive from Nanaimo to reach Port Hardy. From there, it's 16 hours overnight on the big ferry. Then, it's the Prince Rupert to Prince George stretch. So, it's not too bad and it's broken up enough that it doesn't feel daunting.

It's a special place! I'd like to get back out there now that Covid is behind us, and see what the city truly has to offer in its best form!
I have gone there ever summer to fish for over 20 years and I would so no its not worth going. Its a long ways to go for not much to see. I would say theres easier places to get to and nicer

Best time to visit Rupert is in the Summer.
I’d love to visit in the summer! I had a great time in winter, but I can imagine that summer would open up a ton of opportunities there and have a much different vibe.
@@DrifterDave it is a totally different vibe. Lots of fishermen come up in the summertime to go commercial / food fishing and there's a lot more people in town also visiting family.

Wow, thanks for showing us around. My grandpa & great aunt were kids of european immigrant workers in the smelter before re-emigrating south. I read there's lingering pollution issues in the area. Nice though to see the place looks cute today.

There's no smelter in Prince Rupert. You are either thinking of Kitimat, Alcan smelter or the pulp mill in Prince Rupert

@@DrifterDave Little known fact, Seattle's Best is actually Starbucks. It's just the brand they use in situations where they don't want to use the Starbucks name, because they can't control the quality as well (gas stations, vending machines, etc).

9:40 Can you actually board the ferry (and settle into your cabin) an hour or two before the ferry leaves? That would be nice and convenient.
Not that early, but maybe 30 minutes before if my memory serves me well. They basically allow foot passengers to board first, and cars to follow. That process (parking) takes a while, so I'd estimate about 30 min to get settled.
You should have Walked from the highliner inn to Cowbay (would have been a 20 minute walk down 1st ave.) NTL, I'll give you a 7 out of 10 for your promotional efforts. Glad you enjoyed the little city that once was a booming fishing port. It's been 16 years since I've been there... looks like the city's tourism department has really put a good effort on restoration of the harbour front.
I did walk from Highliner to Cow Bay via 1st Ave W? Then I did a loop around and back into downtown via 3rd! I definitely enjoyed checking out a city I’ve always wanted to visit - it reminded me a ton of Kodiak, Alaska. Thanks for watching! 🙏
@@DrifterDave I've been told that Rupert's economy has taken a serious blow in the past 10+ years... I took a "Google" stroll up 3rd Ave. and was deeply saddened that the news about Prince Rupert was apparently true. I think if it wasn't for the tourism sector of Cow Bay, Rupert would be what we were once told many many years ago - slated to become a ghost town. With the covid pandemic still as bad as it is back there, I hope that there's some kind of light at the end of the tunnel for the tourism industry both in Rupert and Canada alike.
From what I can see on my UA-cam video activity, the city seems to be on the top of many people's travel bucket lists this summer! Let's hope they recoup their Covid losses & get back on their feet with all the buzz.

I'm pretty sure most places remain closed for in-person dining, otherwise I'd suggest Cowpuccino's. There is free wifi at Tim Horton's and at some of the stores in the mall as well. But, the restrictions make everything a bit more difficult 😬

Prince Rupert is definitely worth further exploration if you ever make it back! Nearby Ketchikan, Alaska is also a great town & has a very similar vibe. I’m in Calgary! I took some time off after returning from Greenland to catch up with editing but will be back on the road after Christmas. Likely hit up somewhere in the Caribbean / South Pacific / West Africa - we’ll see!

I am looking to relocate to prince george or prince rupert, i have children and i do not drive so options are limited but have no issues commuting, does prince rupert have busing and we will be renting so i am sure cheaper rent might not be in a very accessable area, any info or advice regarding prince rupert and moving with kids with no car! LoL thank you:)
Prince Rupert has a very efficient and cheap ($2) transit system. You shouldn’t have any issues! 😃
I lived in Rupert for a long time but eventually left because the COL as a apprentice, the Port and Ridley Terminals are very lucrative jobs, the transit is pretty good, rent could be better so if you find a good deal make sure to jump on it right away, Also shopping is pretty accessible as the buses can drop you off very close by and drop you off very close to home.

Pretty well everywhere in Canada is facing a cost of living crisis. I'd encourage you to visit sites like Rentfaster.ca to assess the average rent, etc. I'd estimate about $100-150 per person per week for food.
The rents are high if you can even find a place to rent. Food prices are quite high also.
I bet! So unfortunate to see our country in such a state of decline from coast to coast. Hopefully we have a change in government next year and Canada's future will be brighter (and cheaper)

The unemployment rate in Prince Rupert is 1.7%, compared to 6.4% nationally - so I think it will be much easier to find a job there than in other parts of Canada. Enjoy your move to Prince Rupert!

Most things about a good Canada are not true, Including clean cities - beaches, and forests. It's a big lie. The first time I arrived in Vancouver in 2018, I was shocked. As soon as I left the airport door, I saw tissue, disposable glasses, and other garbage left in the city. The further I went, the more I saw them. Before I moved to Canada, I lived in Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, Serbia, The United States, and for a short time in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Netherlands, Germany, and England, but I have never seen the amount of garbage that people leave in different Canadian cities. Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec are no less than Vancouver. Canadian and Canada Governments don't care about this tragedy. I think everything that says about Canada as a clean and powerful culture is not true. You don't need to travel to Canada to see this. Just watch some videos about walking in downtown Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec. You will find the truth. Impossible for you to walk in a Canadian city and you don't see the dark side of that. Everywhere you will see garbage. You will never see this in Europe, Australia, the United States, Japan, and Korea. This amount of waste is not even seen in Malaysian, Indonesian, or Thailand cities. It is impossible for you to use public transport and not see a lot of garbage at stations or on the route. You will be surprised to find a lot of garbage even in the woods - by the rivers and on the beaches in Canada. I wish the Canadians woke up and had no enmity with their country.
To be fair, I randomly looked at videos from downtown Manchester and Concord in New Hampshire - Philadelphia - Detroit - Chicago - New York - Baltimore - Denver - Nashville, and Knoxville in the United States, and Toronto - Quebec - Montreal - Winnipeg - Calgary - Vancouver - Victoria - Ottawa and Thunder Bay in Canada. we should be fair. The bitter truth must be accepted. Without any exaggeration. Completely impartial. I have to say that I didn't see a single piece of garbage in any of the US videos to convince myself. Without exaggeration, in all Canadian cities, there must have been a piece of garbage on the ground less than every hundred meters. It must have an important reason. I do not know. But this is a bitter truth. You can try. This country should be brought closer to its exaggerated claim. the truth is bitter. Certainly, some Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and even Malaysia are much cleaner compared to Canada. Of course, we should not forget that Canada claims to be one of the 10 cleanest countries in the world. And Vancouver claims to be one of the 5 cleanest cities in the world. Please go to East Hastings or Victoria Drive or Commercial Drive or West Georgia or Broadway or Main Street and judge for yourself. I am 50 years old and have traveled to 26 countries. Canada is far from its claims. I saw, homeless people, pooping and peeing everywhere and it's so common. nobody cares. I was shocked again. I endured for 3 years but every day going worst. late in 2022, I decided to move to the east because I thought that place has a stronger culture. I chose Montreal. I had heard it is the capital of art and civilization in Canada. it was absolutely wrong. Canada is Canada. I was shocked again, again, and again. the wave of homelessness, graffiti, vandalism, bad smell, terrible infrastructure especially roads in or out of the city, and above all, you can see trash everywhere. plastic bags, tissues, water bottles, and disposable cups. You cannot see any street or park or public place without these. This is impossible. surprisingly nobody cares. neither the people nor the government!!!!!!! please, don't be fooled by the advertisement about a good Canada. please, be careful. most of the things about a good Canada are deception This country is disappointing. Please, Please, Please, don't immigrate to Canada you would regret it absolutely. this is not a developed country, Canada is a developing country with huge serious problems.
I guess you could do your part and pick up garbage where you saw any? - I hope you did! Did you approach the city governments with your concerns? Citizenship starts with the individual, not as a spectator.
@@DrifterDave Hi dear friend. I have done it many times and still do. I was even mocked in Vancouver for picking up trash. There is no end to littering in the streets-neighborhoods-parks-woods-beaches and national parks in Canada. I think this is a cultural problem.
What culture is Canada? It's a multicultural society. There isn't one singular culture - just 100s of individual cultures who live life as they see fit. Some litter. Some don't. In a land that stretches 6000 km east to west, and 3500 km north to south, it's silly to say things like "Canada is filthy" - it's far too large of a country to write off in a UA-cam comment. Maybe you're just visiting the filthy places? You might want to get off the beaten track & move outside your narrative.
