The TD1655 is a 15.6" full-HD portable display. It's a second monitor designed with simple connectivity and flexibility in mind. The target market, according to ViewSonic, is remote workers, business travellers and digital nomads. It does feel a little specialist and niche, but with the massive increase in home working since March 2020, this type of display has come into its own.
It's nice to have a big workstation set up for working from home with plumbed in monitors and laptop docks but that's not reality. Many people move their workspace around the house either because of necessity or simply to have a change of scenery and try out a new spot. The TD1655 is perfect for this and can be connected with just one cable** and placed next to your computer on whichever surface is your desk for the day. It can be used in both landscape and portrait mode and has full touchscreen capability.
** USB-C is an industry-standard connector but it has many roles. Different laptop manufacturers choose to implement different support. For example, USB-C could just carry good old USB 2.0 though it is capable of much more. Check your laptop and look for a lighting symbol next to the port. If it has that, it supports Thunderbolt which means it will probably carry power and potentially video too. Remember, not all laptops will supply video over a USB-C port.
In this video, I look at the pros and cons of the TD1655 and hopefully give you an idea as to whether it's right for you.

I was stupid forgot the login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me!
@Elijah Briar instablaster :)
@Princeton Lucian I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process atm.

@Princeton Lucian It worked and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my account :D
@Elijah Briar no problem xD
Very professional & in-depth review!
i want to see the monitor review, but i saw the reviewer more than the product
🤣
Thanks for creating the review. Very helpful. Do you know if this can be used with a USB-C to USB-A cable and still provides video and power through the single cable?
Thank you for reviewing this thing. Subcribed for time being
Incredible review. I'm gonna make my purchase decision based on your review. Thank you
It’s a decent display. I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
@@tdcattech I just bought it today and loving it. Thank you. But type C only connection doesn't work on my PC. I've to use both USB and hdmi cables. Any thoughts?

@@tdcattech I see. So, the port has to be a thunderbolt. Thank you for the clarification :)
Great review!!! I can connect two ViewSonic TD1655 Display to laptop?
Great review. I don't know if I missed it in the video, but how does the stand work when going to portrait? I know you said the wires were a bit cumbersome but is there a seperate stand for portrait?
Thanks for the feedback. The stand has an angled edge on one side and opens out enough to support the screen in the portrait position. It's not as flexible as landscape but it works.
hey. Thanks for a review. So does it need to be connected to the power or it works directly with Type-c?
If your USB-C port can deliver power, it just needs the one cable. You have to be careful on that front though as you could have a USB-C socket on your laptop that doesn’t support anything beyond USB2 but still uses the connector.
Will touch functionality work when this connect with MacBook Air 2017 model
Great review because you focused on the fact that it is good choice if you dont need great resolution or great speakers. I got it for $239. Also for windows users an ipad works but kinda sucks as a second monitor, even if you pay for duet display
How long did it take for the monitor sir?
I enjoyed your review as I'm looking to get a portable monitor for remote working, just for exact reasons you mentioned. Lack of space, need something movable, i.e. for dining room table etc. Need HDMI port for my set up. Have been comparing different models, so liked what you said about the larger bezel at the bottom raising it up out of eyeline if book etc. Hadn't considered that before. And that you showed the charger, kickstand flap and screws/hinges on the back as you never see these normally. Plus your comment about it being glossy and not matte - again, something I hadn't picked up on. One area you didn't cover is what connection you might need to make touchscreen active, as I think it's only over USB-C. It would be very useful to understand that side of it when working out whether worth paying extra for a touchscreen model. Would be interested to see you review the AOC 16T2 as this is similar but has built in battery. Waiting for this to be released in UK before I make my final purchase decision.
That's an interesting one. I must admit that all my testing was over USB-C with my work laptop so I'll have to check how this works on HDMI. Let me get back to you.
@@tdcattech Hi, Does touch function work on HDMI?
@@tdcattech +1 HDMI review please :)
I need a large touch screen that will work with a Raspberry Pi3, will this work and still have touchscreen functionality?
Can you use this monitor as a primary monitor with the laptop lid closed or the laptop has to be left open to mirror ?
Good video and info, thank you 👍
Great review.
I have been using for over 1 year as an extension for my Dell Latitude. I have been using it with USBc and mini HDMI. The main use has been expanding my programming windows or reading tech docs. I have no problems really and nothing to complain about I agree with all you said except the 2 cables ( Obviously does not look as neat as 1 USB cable , but when set up for the day there is not a practical problem) and the brightness which I do not have a problem with even using it with a huge south facing window behind it. Not be using it for graphics work or gaming so no observed problem with colours.
Agreed. I still use this monitor every day for my day job when I’m working from home and it’s excellent. The colours are poor on it but for most of what I do in the day, it just doesn’t matter. Bigquery, Excel and Teams don’t really need perfect colour rendition. 😁
are usb c mandatory or can it be plugged to power ac ?
For me I like the honest pro's and cons. For Business will suit me for simply portable office less cables and tidy.
Just as a follow up, I still use this display and it is excellent. Absolutely perfect for business use.
Need portable screen for Mac mini will this work?
Hey man loved your vedio thnks so much quick qustion can i move my daw faders and my plugin switches with my fingers on the viewsonic monitor
Second. I’m also interested to know if this works.
Can it be ideal choice to use mac mini m1 + this portable display to dev apps on IDE like xcode and VS? and will be travel friendly? or should I spend more money and get a mac book pro with M1? I want both travel friendly and less costly option that why I need someone's thought on this setup.
Surely that can’t be convenient? You’d need access to mains power for the Mini and also always need a mouse and keyboard as well as the display. 🤷🏻♂️
Can we connect fire stick to this monitor via hdmi port ?
we shall so many kind of Viewsonic product like the small one of TD1655 in our warehouse
What is your favorite monitor for WFH (link to a review would be nice)? 👼
Thank you for the great review!
I read on Amazon review that the touch screen only works if we setup the ViewSonic as mirror image to the main machine its connected to (instead of extended monitor) . Is that correct? Thanks
I use this on a Windows 10 work laptop connected via USB-C and the touchscreen works in extended mode.
Just bought the Viewsonic 15.6 oled version.
I still use this every day for work. The colour rendition is poor but it's perfect in every other way for a work from home setup. How's the colour on the OLED version?
Can it run while being unplugged?
I am planning to buy TD1655.
Does pen included with monitor needs battery?
How good is battery life?
I am planning planning to buy this monitor.
My main objective is to take notes.
Next time test all cables including the USB type A please.
Hello Sir good video, I am just wondering how you both powered and received AV signal through one cable? I just bought this monitor and I have to use two cables for it to work with my laptop, which is annoying. Any tips?
It sounds like a power shortage somewhere, or your USB-C cable isn’t the type that can transfer data, just power.
@@The_Mister Thank you for your reply Brian. The power shortage probably comes from my laptops USB C port not being powerful enough.
I have tried different cables but none of them seem to work. It is particularly frustrating because I literally spent £2500 on my laptop but the USB port is garbage haha, but that is my own fault for getting AMD instead of Intel.
How to connect to and Android phone
One thing I think needs mentioning with these portable monitors is how dim they are after waking them up. Most of them are super dim, so every time you wake it up you have to navigate the menu to turn the brightness back up, and it can be a major pain depending on the menu.
Never noticed that. I still use this monitor almost every day with my work laptop and that's not been a problem for me.
If you power it constantly ( ex. in the wall ) the monitor saves it's configurations i think .
Sorry not noticed that one at all, not on mine , it wakes up just fine.
I just received mine and it's not working with my iPad Pro or my smartphone. No signal whatever combination of cables. Really frustrating. At least it works with my MacBook Pro but I won't get the full use I was expecting. Do you have advice for Android users?
I'm wondering if the phone's graphic chip would be able to handle such a large monitor. It would be great if someone would do a full test on that aspect: will the extra computation overload/overheat the phone. That's on top of assuming that you're connecting the monitor to an external power souce and that power is enough, of course.
how to rotate?
I really enjoyed this video, you got a new subscriber D:
Does the touchscreen only work on mirror mode or can it work on extended mode as well?
I use it on Extended mode and the touchscreen works fine.
@@tdcattech does it require downloading drivers to use the touchscreen on extended mode?
hi Sir
very nice review.
I have only two questions please. As a musician who reads a lot of music sheet, I have to carry a lot of books which is very annoying. My question is , if I put all my music sheet in a pdf format on a pendrive, will it be possible for me to open it on the Viewsonic TD1655 ? Of course my pendrive uses both usb type c and a.
Second question, it it possible to connect via bluetooth or only through cables?
regards
bruno
No. This is only a display so, in that respect, it’s no better than a TV from the 1980’s 🙂 except it’s much slimmer, more convenient and connects easily. It only connects via cables (HDMI or Thunderbolt / USB-C display)
@@tdcattech thank you Sir,
Now it's clear.
Hello, how do I connect it to USB-C, since it does not turn on from my notebook only with the usb-c cable, I have to connect at least two cables to make it work and always hdmi.?
Have you solved this? Which notebook model is yours?
Imp question, plz reply sir
If i use hdmi for video and type a to type c cable for power, then will touch works or not? Some one in other review is said that will not works. Plz answer
No. It will only carry touch info on USB-C and on certain platforms.
just a question.. does it hv a built-in battery?
No. Power over USB-C.
If display quality is an issue, do you have any recommendations?
Can you explain what you mean? Poor colour? Blurry image? Broken image?
@@tdcattech I think she means if you recommend any other alternatives
thanks
Could I use this as a primary monitor? I am getting a mac mini m1 and I want to take this around
Yes. Thunderbolt out on the Mac Mini into the USB-C input on the TD1655 will work fine. I’ve done this on my MacBook Pro.
@@tdcattech I heard there was compatibility problems with M1 mac's?
Are you using this touch screen for your DAW?
No, I've never tried that.
how does it work with android phones with USB Type C ports ?
I had the same problem today. No signal
Can we switch off touch screen if not required for that moment
Not that I can see, no.
please review the " ThinkVision M14t USB-C Mobile Monitor with Touch Screen " and also make the comparison video of these two monitors. thank you for the great video.
can i connect amazon firestick to this?
I see no reason why not. It's just a display...just a very handy one.
Can i connect ipad mini to this portable monitor? And how to do that?
I think you can only do this with the Apple Lightning to HDMI adapter which is a more clunky setup than if you used this with a suitable USB-C port on a laptop that carries display information.
@@tdcattech yes, it works with Apple Lightning hdmi adapter but only screen mirroring and no touch function.
So does it have a battery?
No. It’s powered by USB. That might be from USB-A ports on your laptop together with HDMI for video or the somewhat neater one cable solution of USB-C carrying both video and power. NOTE: Just because you have a USB-C port, does not mean it carries power or video. You need to check your laptop specs for that.
Good during power outaage as monitors require power.
Yes. It’s perfect for any off-grid, battery, low power or power outage scenario. ✅
Awesome review!! 4 New subscribers added.
Thanks for the Subs and feedback.
Why you didn't mention that it flickers as hell below 99% brightness
good review, but too many shots for you no enough for the product, that's werid
If has the Screen Cast, will be better.
this monitor photoshop workimg in properly
Terrible review terrible review not very comprehensive at all left a lot of questions I guess and facts about the monitor not answered and did not even actually brought up because I think you were too busy either plug an apple or for whatever reason but those comments really shouldn't be even been in here about the Apple iPad you know I mean should you should have talked a lot more about the functions of this monitor and and and not the cons that you thought but just how this functions and what it did terrible review would never subscribe to your channel because if this is any indication of the rest of your reviews then why would anybody waste their time with all due respect take care.
Appreciate the feedback. Feel free to ask any questions about all the things I missed. Clearly my approach is not for you though.
