The title should be "Avoiding The Fireplace Cleaning Conman". They want $800 to diagnose my Chimney Plus Cleaning. I have a smooth ceramic chimney. They come with thousand of dollars of optics and cameras that they expect the customer to pay for when I can see in my chimney with a flashlight. Thank you for posting. You are helpfull.
The inspection should defn come with but that camera is for close inspection sometimes the job is a bit more difficult and proper up charge for a proper job isn’t a bad thing
you are an angel for making this video..it saved my day..smoke was backing up into my living room from my woodstove...I feared I would have a chimney fire...its winter time and raining..I couldnt get on the roof 2 stories high..fearful of falling...it was cold...I saw how easy and safe your chimney cleaning video is...I bought a chimney brush and cleaned my wood stove chimney..now I can keep my home warm...thank you for sharing..
Don't get me wrong for I think getting the best from your endeavours is always a good thing. With 18 years of being a chimney sweep and I'm over the water in England so things will be different but safety is always upper-most in my thoughts when making videos. Gloves and bust mask is always a good thing as not all chimney flues will be as clean as the one you demonstrated on and soot is a carcinogenic. You did a good job of sheeting the fireplace up on your video for the power sweeping brush. You could recommend doing the same for any sweeping of a chimney flue. Please don't think I'm having a go, I'm really not. T-Care and safe sweeping. Paul
You all probably dont give a damn but does anybody know a trick to get back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the account password. I love any tricks you can offer me.
@Jabari Salvador Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out now. Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Great informative video! Now I’m a woman and I’m going to attempt to try this...my husband is extremely lazy and careless and insist the chimney looks clean and don’t need a cleaning dispite that we’ve lived in this house for twenty years, burned many fires and the chimney has never been cleaned😖😏 Blessed we’ve not had a chimney fire yet! Thank you, Annemarie C
Try using a chimney sweep who has experience in this field. Professionals are used to do inspections, perform sweeps, and repair any damage. We have special tools and equipment, because chimney sweeping can be dangerous without the proper knowledge and safety precautions.
“Today I’m going to show you how to clean your chimney using the bottom up method so you don’t have to go on the roof and risk injury” Step 1. Go on roof and a drop rope down the chimney from top to measure the chimney. 🤦♂️ 😂
Idk why I never considered sweeping from the ground. Doing this next time I’m terrified of heights but often get on the roof or up high anyway to save $ etc. Thanks for the great content!
nice video....crisp instructions, right to the point, no time wasted...good job on your presentation...you've just taught me something new... I'll try it next year... thanks!
Nice video, the only challenge is seeing the cost of the parts. I live in So Cal and use my fireplace a handful of times a year, how often should you clean your chimney when you use it so little? Also, there are no trees around to get leaves into the chimney.
Thank you. I really liked your video. I always clean bottom up. Because I can't get on my roof. I quite enjoy doing it. It's not a horrible chore. Problem is I am unsure I have the right brush. Think it's too small. Think I need a wire one also for masonry chimney, and only a poly one came with the cleaning set. I'm going to buy a new brush head off of Amazon.
Yeah, it's nasty as hell with all the stuff falling out onto your hands and arms and the floor and sooting up everything. She's not messing with a dirty chimney-at all. I cleaned one from the bottom exactly one time-never again.
Ok some good tips here but where is the insane mess?! That chimney is spotless. Your gonna need gloves, goggles and a dust mask, and that is just to protect you, if you want to keep the house clean you will need a lot more protection than an small plastic sheet. Cleaning from the bottom you and your house will get a heavy shower of carcinogenic dust. Granted most of the fine dust will go up the chimney if the draft conditions are right but you will likely have a gallon of course dust falling down on you. By demonstrating on a perfectly clean chimney your viewers have no idea what they are in for.
I have a question...if the chimney is really full of creosote and debris, and if you're shoving it all upward, isn't it all going to fall out on to your roof or get jammed up in the chimney cap? I'm being serious, please give me an answer...thanks!
@@wadepatton2433 Thanks Wade. If you don't mind me asking another question...I had a chimney recently so bad with baked on Creosote that even using a drill, flex rods, and chain spinner it didn't do much. What do you do in this situation? I really appreciate you guys help!
@@henrybothwell3666 Sorry I can't advise you there, I've only seen glazed over creosote in a stove (not mine) and have not had to remove it. I run my stove hot enough with enough frequency to reduce the need to clean it, and the buildup is always loose and easy to knock off. Good luck, you might need a pro for that.
I slipped on a spot that hand dried on my metal roof and landed on my but and essentially rode my roof like a slide. Landed on my feet! Broke 3 bones in 2 places. You state "You will not have to climb up on top of your roof". Then, you climb up on top of your roof to measure the length of your chimney. So... how does this help?
It's just so you buy the right length of rod. You don't have to do that everytime once you have the right length. If you have awoodburning stove you should alreayd know what length of pipe you have.
I don't know why you'd need to rope measure anyway. You have a rough idea how high your roof is. Use what you think is a pole too few, go out and see if it is right up or not. Yes? CRACKED IT. No? Add another and SLOWSLY shove it up! Be even more careful if you have anything over the top to stop birds or rain getting in! Take it easy over the last bit and you'll be just fine. One word of CAUTION!!! DO NOT THINK YOURS WILL BE AS CLEAN AS HERS WAS! It won't be and block the front with an old sheet or something taped to the opening.
After being a sweep for 35 years all i can say is get up on the roof or give up ..your cap will be built up with material .. doing it this way offers no benefit to the system overall.. a person needs to be on the roof and clean the cap as well as an assessment of the condition of the vent at the top (the area furthest from the heat source)and most prone to buildup of material.. ignoring this most important area because your afraid to climb is the biggest cop out in the world.. call a professional .. id love to see you try this method on a 5 inch liner with a 24 inch breech and a birds nest .. although your cute and all and really trying to put me and my kind out of work ,you should try to be a real sweep for 10 years and then ask yourself if making a video like this helps anyone .. fail as far a i see
fingers967 I'm a sweep also, as this little woman is. She will get on the roof,of her own house. She left her number , if you are looking for any help. After reading your comment here, I've decided to hire a professional to help cleaning my chimney and not to do it myself. You are right, it's best to get someone that knows what they're doing and have years of experience. Thank you!!
Some dampers are to tight to get the right size brush through for the size of the flu, and some may be loose and could get knocked out if forced. Then she can do a video on how to replace a broken damper . Also I would like to see her demonstrate how to get all the debrie off the smoke shelf she talked about.
I've hired a number of professional chimney sweeps, and never once have they climbed on the roof. I'll try to find one that does, but if not, I don't see why I need to pay them to do the same thing I can do.
I agree with William Katcher. The last two chimney sweepers I hired was only at my house no longer than 25 min. Slapped a brush up my chimney and then put a camera on a damn pole and looked up the chimney. Charged me 225$ and drove off into the sunset. I feel I been anally raped with no grease. The inspection itself was 190$ so he only charged me 35$ to clean it. This is a competitive market these days. Everybody is trying to save a dollar. People probably wouldn’t mind hiring professionals if they were honest and didn’t have ridiculous prices. He basically made 225$ in 30 mins. I guess I’m in the wrong business.
Golden rule , "thats it" keep turning the rods , what happens when the rod come loose , or the chimney is in bad condition , what then , it' so easy , untill it goes wronge , oh yes , phone you for help ! ? ? ? Oh really !

SMH @ your husband. How did it go?
“Today I’m going to show you how to clean your chimney using the bottom up method so you don’t have to go on the roof and risk injury”
Step 1. Go on roof and a drop rope down the chimney from top to measure the chimney.

It’s basically like using a bore brush in a giant gun barrel, with the caveat that Ballistol would be a VERY bad idea in this case.
Plus, Ballistol smells like dirty feet and nobody wants to smell that when they are enjoying a cozy fire.

Very informative. Great tutorial.
How do I measure the exact flue size without going up on the roof?
Thank you for the clear, helpful video!
I can do this, but still have to clean the top part that collects where it vents out
SO helpful, thank you!
Great video!!
How do you know when it's clean?
Is there any disadvantage with cleaning the chimney from the bottom up? I can access the chimney from the roof but I'd rather not if I don't have to.

What's the size of your brush

Looks like 8"

If you're up on top using a rope to measure the rod length why don't you just clean it from the top down that just makes sense to me Maybe I'm Wrong.
