Holy cowpokes Batman!! This video right here gave me the courage to finally unbox the brush AND use it! Thank you so much for making this video, my chimney hadn't been done since we moved here 27 years ago, lol obviously it's only used a couple times a year and your upfront, no b.s. review was incredibly helpful! Thanks you from out in the sticks in Wa. state.
You are so welcome! I am thrilled to hear this video helped you. 27 years without a cleaning, that is impressive lol. How bad was the buildup after all that time? How well did the brush clean it?
@@ItsGoodintheWoods Hey there! The buildup was roughly 1/4 inch of gross all around, it's a metal chimney so that probably helped to not hold on to even more ewww. Thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it and the fires have been wonderful, my old dog is loving sleeping right in front. :O)
Hey Everybody! A few professional (yes I’m a professional) safety tips when using this product: 1) Protective eyewear is a must when using this. 2) A dusk mask is mandatory. PP3 is the minimum filtration requirement for this job as the dust is extremely fine. You do not want to be breathing this stuff in! 3) This product comes with a sheet of plastic. Use it the seal off completely the opening of your fireplace completely. Poke a hole in the plastic before sealing the final side and feed the rod with the head attached already from back to front. This will contain the dust and debris to the fire box. 4) Wear non-porous gloves (nitrile works fine for residential use) until job is completed and all is cleaned and disposed of. I’m a certified Chimney Sweep and I swear by this product (also not paid by company to endorse, 😂). I always say to my customers, “Anyone who is willing and handy can safely and more than sufficiently clean his chimney using this product! Not to mention you’d save a pretty penny. It is still recommended to have a CSIA CERTIFIED chimney sweep come out every year or two to perform an 11 pt inspection making sure your chimney is safe beyond its cleanliness. Hope this was helpful to the DYI community!
I have had that same chimney cleaning system for 3 years and I love it. Every once in a while I do get on the roof and work the Soot Eater from top to bottom but not often. I sometimes do this from the bottom maybe 3 to 4 times a winter. I have even done it from the bottom with a fire going in the stove. As long as I do it quickly there has not been a problem
I'm 70 now, and I don't get on ladders anymore, so I did get one of these units a couple years ago, and it works just fine; thanks for the review, I hope more folks take your advice and get this unit. Cheers!
Thanks for your review! Definitely helped me! I hate heights and won't go on my roof (6'4 285lbs). The old owner left an old set of rods and brush to do it from the top. Definitely going to look into getting this!
Hey Justin, very nice I do have a chimney to clean. I clean my chimney every couple of years with a brush from the top down. I built houses and chimneys for 30 plus years. When you said you could go from the bottom up I said to myself yeah right. Lol I bought a brush many years ago that supposedly it would do that well it didn't LOL. I will be purchasing this one that you just showed. I guess you can teach an old dog a new trick. :) Now I'm going to teach you a new trick. I worked on customer homes for like I said 35 plus years I couldn't get them dirty anymore than I needed to. Next time you working on your chimney like that put a Shop-Vac in there with that rod. It should pick up all of the chimney soot if not most of it. I used to use a big shop vac and it got it all. I hope you and your family are having a great week! ATB Tom

I just cleaned mine from the bottom up with this type of brush. Worked well, but was so danged messy! Next time I think I'll build a wooden cover with a slot in it for the rods to go through at the bottom door of the chimney. Might even cut a hole in cover piece for my shop vac with a drywall dust bag attached.
I have taken to using an old pillow. I block the hole with the pillow and it has plenty of give to allow the brush to do its work. The shop vac is a good idea
Put some plastic over the hole, cut a hole in it big enough for a shop vac hose, seal it up and then go on the roof and go from the top down while the vacuum is on.
We have used something similar but it dosmt have the locking buttons... it was screwed on and it came undone in the chimney.... so the locking *buttons are a plus! I'd say it did a pretty good job!

Hi Ruthie ! Thank you so much ! Keeping your chimney clean is very important ......I will be paying much closer attention to ours from now on ! Thanks for stopping by ! - Justin
Well, I'm a 73 yr old recently widowed. I went on my roof because of the flue being clogged up and knocked some of it loose. Needless to say, my equilibrium isn't what it once was. Living so remotely, it's hard to get a professional out to clean it. The wood stove is the only source of heat I have and the temps are really plummeting with another storm coming this next week. My flue got so clogged up it was pouring smoke back into the house big time. I cannot get anyone out to clean it for over two weeks. So, I bought one of these contraptions (not this particular brand) and tried it. It started working okay until it didn't. The connecting ends kept coming off until finally it came apart so far up the flue I cannot pull it out. So I am going to bed for now because I can't stand anymore fun for tonight. I can see the rod but arms aren't long enough to reach up and pull it out, plus you have to be a very small person to get in there. I am frustrated and pissed but the concept is great, if it works. It didn't for me so now am still cold here in the mtns. with no help. Tomorrow's another day.
I am sorry to hear this. I have had this contraption for 3 years now. Have not had an issue yet. The connection points on this one are very solid, and designed so they will not separate. I hope you get your situation resolved quickly. It is going to get nasty out.
Well, managed to get the rod and brush out but again a friend had to go up on the roof for me and take the cap off the top of the flue to try to push the contraption back down into the stove. What's the point of "cleaning" a chimney if you've blown all the dust and creosote into your house? The appropriate way is to close all the hatches and clean the chimney from the highest point to the lowest. Then just rake the soot into the bucket from the lowest point in the basement.
So the chimney does catch fire. The whole point of the contraption is to not have to climb onto the roof. Yes, I should have blocked the catch door with a piece of plastic or old pillow. I was excited, and thinking about too many things at once.
