- Former African National Congress (ANC) President Thabo Mbeki is assisting the party to garner votes in Soweto. He'll lead a walkabout and meet and greet at the Jabulani Mall in Soweto. This comes as the ANC ropes in its heavyweights to bolster its campaign ahead of the May 29 polls.

Had Thabo Mbeki done this in 2008/9 when Zuma took over from him as ANC president, it would've prevented a lot of damage that ensued inside the ANC post 2009. The problems that Zuma's presidency encountered in the ANC and subsequently government, were partly due to Mbeki's fractionalist conduct towards the presidency of Zuma. Because his refusal to campaign for ANC from 2009-2018, coupled with his absentia in ANC party politics, his support for COPE etc entrenched fractionalism in the ANC. The Mbeki vs Zuma factions have reshaped themselves and are still prevalent inside the ANC to this day..
