Thanks for the review.
@@beauslim thanks for watching!
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice, clean and clear review. Well done.
@@Zhennariii thank you!
def a concise review, thanks much! doing some research on a semi-cheap multibay drive dock, and wanted to pick your brain. As a summer project, I'm looking to migrate prob 25-30 old SATA drives from the archives, and localize them on to my primary DAS. curious if you think an array like this would be up to the task? will be a lot of in-and-outs with drives, and can see where using the right array will be helpful for project like this.
have used docks before that seemingly disconnect if you look at them wrong, and was glad to hear there were no arbitrary disconnects with this. Not having dedicated power buttons for each drive might be an issue, but in OSX if drive is disconnected properly this shouldn't be an issue.
i'm in the brainstorming process of this project and apprecaite any input, thanks!
btw: just subbed, love these types of YT channels tbh. in a world of "niche down" creators, I actually love coming across cool channel that touches on variety of life, nice work m8!
Thank you for the sub! Yes, a power button could be an extra safety measure but isn’t necessary. Like you mentioned, I just eject the drive in OSX and have had no issues when swapping. You could use this enclosure for your task if you don’t mind popping on/off the trays for each drive. If you’re really strapped for time, you could get one of those external hard drive docks that look like a toaster. It may streamline your process since you wouldn’t need a tray for each HDD. That being said, I really do like this enclosure. It has still been rock-solid with no disconnections and can’t recommend it enough. I should probably get an affiliate link for this!
Thanks for the info, very useful, i would have liked to see if it correctly passes through hard drive serial number information to the operating system it is connected to though
Thank you! From what I can see, my Mac and PC only recognize the serial number of the enclosure, not the individual drives.
@@KeepItConcise that seems to be the case with a lot of these usb enclosures, I have one from qnap that does the same thing, which makes it not a great candidate for a drive enclosure for a NAS, still good for just adding a few drives to a pc though, thanks for the info on that
No problem!
If the enclosure loses power and power is restored does the enclosure come back online automatically, or do you need to press the power button? Thanks.
I haven’t tested it but assume it would come back on automatically because the power switch would still be in the “on” position
@@KeepItConcise Ok. Hard to tell from the photos if the switch has a distinct on/off position. I've also read some forum posts where users complained it didn't reconnect when power turned back on, so trying to check before buying. Thanks.
Doing a noise test with HDDs in it would be nice :)
@@benja1378 what’s the best way to do that?
Can it be configured to show up as x1 single drive when using all 4 bays?
Yep! You'll need software to do it though. If using Mac, select "JBOD" in the RAID setup to have the computer recognize all disks as one.
@@KeepItConcise I see! So disk utility on a Mac won't be able to do the RAID set up?
@@scooter_nz Sorry for the confusion--Yes, you can setup JBOD through disc utility> RAID Assistant on Mac.
@@KeepItConcise great thanks! Deciding between the D4-320 and the OWC Thunderbay 4 at the moment but the Terramaster is such a great price
How are you planning to use it?
CAN I USE A TYPE C TO USB 3.1 CABLE WITH IT?
@@EnigmaStudios_KalAlexander It should work, but it would be slower.
Would it be simple enough to swap out that fan if it was to start failing? Is it soldered for example?
No, I would just buy a new unit for the same price as a fan would cost, lol.
I’m not sure. If I ever ended up needing to replace the fan I’ll let you know.
Have you tried the Hot Swap capability? Can you eject a drive without disrupting others? Have you tried it on a Linux system? I'm looking to see if all drives retain their USB mappings when one is hot-swapped.
I have not used it with Linux, but yes, the hot swap works on macOS
Why exactly people need hot swap, why not just turn off and install the new drive and turn on and that is, why you need install a drive when is on?
@@JohnSmith-zl8rz so you could swap a drive while continuing to use the others without interruption or downtime.
@@KeepItConcise but why is that so neccesary, you could turn off the thing and add the other drives. what's the big deal with swap with the unit on?
@@JohnSmith-zl8rz it’s a bigger perk for network attached storage, but it’s something that could help if a drive was in use because you were watching a movie or working on a project and didn’t want to shut down the whole thing.
I'm a mac user, so if I want RAID, I need do it with Disk Utility? with RAID assistant? how good works with?
What happens if I delete all my OS and install again? I do that from Sonoma to Sequioa by example. I lose all the data on the disks due the RAID is not working anymore or something?
@@JohnSmith-zl8rz There is other RAID software available if you don’t want to use disk utility; however RAID would probably disappear regardless of software if you delete your OS, but I can’t say for certain.
@@KeepItConcise yes, after some research I prefer go with Carbon Copy Cloner and just make a task copy from one drive to other, a "mirror", individual drives, no RAID.
@@JohnSmith-zl8rzGood call. I use RAID 0 for performance and CCC to back them up.
Can it be powered via only USB C ? For power & data ?
No, it needs the provided external power supply to function
That’s correct
Not a fan of power button location.
I agree. It would be nice to have it on the front, but at least you can still access it without needing to move the enclosure.
I disagree, I like a clean front. They better keep it there. LOL
