  • There was an known abandoned Kitfox in a hanger near Sundry AB Canada. Investigation reealed it to be a Model 2 Avid Flyer. Kitfox and Avid models 1 to 3 are identical.

Please inspect the landing gear if they were covered with fabric. After nearly a year of repair on my Avid Model C SN: 573 the right main landing gear failed 6” from the bottom where all three tubes meet causing a bent right wing, destroyed Warp drive propeller and gearbox inspection. After the collapse we peeled the left gear fabric and found a newer main landing gear structure. This was not visible on the condition inspection as the fabric was extremely smooth and as we and the FAA found the shock tube corroded from the inside. The original gear is .035” thick so I had Randy Moore make me a new gear with heavier tubing.

Looks nice Ed, haven't seen you on the Avid Forum in a long time. An A model Avid has a 36" wide fuselage, and the door on yours looks like an A model as well. B model and later models were 39 1/2" wide and had the larger door. (bottom of door goes back twice as far as on the A model). Nice looking plane though. Bet it really performs good at that weight. Yes, I was and still am a little confused about what model it is. The Assembly Manual and Invoice call it a B. The A, and I thought early B's, had the fuel tank behind the instrument panel. This one has the newer instrument panel and 2 wing tanks. The tanks also hold a lot more fuel than the 11 US gallons stated in the construction manual. I am amazed a the weight, but I think using only 3 coats of primer and 2 finis coats helped.

@@MrSuperbigdan It may have come from the factory with the header tank, {probably did} but that doesn't mean the builder used it. Actually, my B model had a header tank, (in front of the instrument panel) and I think many C models did as well. As I said, the A model is 36" wide and has your style door. Fuel tanks should have been either 7 or 14 gallons, depending on if they filled two rib bays or one. I also scrimped on the poly spray, one cross coat on the bottom, two on the top. I never leave it out in the sun if it's not flying so it's not such a big deal for UV damage.
