Hell to the yes. Really good review with some top class riding on a sensational motorcycle. KTM is hitting them out of the park, got me really interested with the Duke 790 and now they drop this; what an awesome machine.
I just bought a used 2014 Duke 690. I'm in love. I cant get enough of it. And now this bike comes along... My little bro is a beast on supermoto and he is thinking of picking this up. I'm a little jealous. KTM has really come back. Now they are thinking of buying ummm Ducati, I think. Dream bike is an RC8 but I dont want to die, yet.....
The 790 duke is one hell of a bike, i had to put A LOT of money and work into my FZ/MT-07 to keep a local 790 duke in sight at our local track days. I absolutely love my FZ-07 but dang, had the duke been available............
@@ssbbmoto I traded my 2017 FZ-07 for a 2020 Husqvarna 701 SM. Loved the bike too but dumping a ton of money in it negated the reason for buying it. Which was an affordable, comfortable street bike. But its suspension was crap. My 701 is amazing. Has every option but cruise control. Can't go wrong with the KTM 690 either.
i've got the 701 cuz of you Chopster, thankyouverymuch; now i'm thinking the improvements w this bike means a swap is coming. Still have to test ride a 790Duke cuz, you know maybe i need that, too, haha.
Thanks for the stellar review. Just slapped 5 hundy down yesterday at my local KTM dealer. Should be in at the beginning of March..Sweet Ginger Brown!!!!
supermoto didn't died. Supermoto riders got married, have kids, no time to ride. Now kids are out of the house and with more money, SM dads are going back to SM. I wish for a lighter 400-500cc SM, and 270-290 lbs range with long service interval
I have a BMW S1000XR at the moment, which I love dearly, as it reminds me of my old KTM 640LC4 Motard, the only reason I got rid of that was because it was useless to go anywhere meaningful more than 1hr away, apart from that it was the most fun bike I ever owned. Seeing what the new 690SMCR car do I am finding myself justifying the possibility of owning 2 bikes again, I won't be getting rid of the XR but I can absolutely see myself buying the SMCR to go with it !
KTM opened my eyes big time ! I rode Supers/sports bikes for years and wasnt interested untill my pal chucked me his keys for the day (2014 SMCR). First hr I was like what's the hype about ! Then I got use to the loss of power I was use to and realised I wasnt using the torque properly as i was used to highly strung revy inline 4's. Then my confidence grew and i was sliding around wheelieing out of corners etc etc. I then almost a mishaps and ended up bouncing up a kerb at around 50 mph, I thought I was gona die but nope the buck sucked it up and I wheelied of the other end ,ass and chest pulsating ! Try that on a R6 you're going Into the trees ! I got home sold MY R6 and got myself a cheaper 2006 LC4. ,I rode that for 3 years and loved every second, I'm now about to go and get my first ever brand new motorbike a 2020 SMCR !! You dont need speed these things are great all rounders and with a soft seat upgrade you can actually tour abit. I ❤ KTM !
I have a panigale, but my other bike is suzuki drz400sm. They give me different chills, supermotos are really unique in terms of driving experience for an average rider. They teach you so much. Go get them boys!!! (and buy enduro wheels to them as well - you will have a 3-in-1 bike: a commuter, a durable track bike, enduro for light terrain - light, because you don't want to take your brand new SM into deep mud and big rocks)
All you have to do is throw away the useless air filter box and replace it with the hidden 6.2 litre auxiliary tank and much better air filter from Rade Garage (Google it) and you have a great road bike with a decent 220-250 mile range. The KTM screen from the Enduro (not the SMC one thats crap) is much better than you would imagine especially if you mount it about 3 inches higher than normal on a bracket. I drove all the way up the West Coast of the USA at 90 mph with very little wind and I am 6.2''. Superb aero-dynamics, often small screens work better than big ones. Test is to light a flame behind it at 80mph, if the flame stays up the AD's are good, mostly the turbulence behind big screens will put it out.
thanks for the tip on the screen, James, i will def follow up. I've got the 701SM and i've ridden big miles over the Coast Range and into the interior; bike's a delight, seats a bit firm, but the wind pressure can be problematic--arm muscles neck muscles. I'm the same height as you so the screen should work for me, too. With other bikes i've had, with larger screens, the noise/turbulence was often so bad that complete removal was the only way to get back to that sweet, clean air stream
I think this motor has been in the 701 for a couple years now. Not sure if its exactly the same but i know the 701 has had a counterbalanced motor where the 690 did not which had the 701 in my top two when picking my last bike. But I dont think the electronic package on the 701 had this level of technical wiz bang. Id be happy with either bike.
ssbbmoto the 701 does have this motor in it. The new 701 is due out next year with all the updated electronics and the QS/auto blipper. I’m glad they decided to stick with the current bikes plastics as I’m not really a fan of this ones new plastics. New 701 is gonna be awesome!
They sell well also, in sweden last year the husky sold out around july and you had to wait for this years. So it's nice that the KTM also gets the upgrades the husky already had and some more :)

Lean sensitive abs/traction control. Not sure i would want them on the track but would love to try it out! Great video/review of the bike!
How is the vibrations on the 690? My old Yamaha WR450 supermoto vibrated so much that is was quite terrible but I still loved riding it :) Now I have a 2019 KTM 500 EXC F with dirt tires only and the vibrations on that is ok but it not like the new 300 2 strokes with balance axle that totally eliminates the vibrations :) . What I would like is a KTM 500 2 stroke with balance axle as the 2 stroke "turbo" feeling is quite addictive. The KTM 300 2 stroke have to little power and it leave me wanting more so that is mainly why I ended up with a EXC 500 F :) (+ I love the 4 stroke sound...)
Brendan Anderson ktm 450 6 days buy a set of sumo wheels you will be happier off-road and will be a mean supermoto but for a street bike the 690 is better I have a mx supermoto and I’m going to buy this for a street bike for comfort

I owned a 620 SC Supermoto... 112kg, around 60HP with all the mods and complete titanium exhaust... That was a dream bike that outran anything on a twisty road. I tried the new Ducati hypermotard 929 and I found the riding position a bit contrived sitting that far forward. In addition I found the Ducati to be a bit like being in a race All the time!! The engine burbling away in the low gears is not that practical!!? Whereas the KTM is a Supermoto, not quite as a race focused but that might not suit you. And the suspension was very hard on the Ducati. Having said that you might prefer the refinement of the Ducati more, but for the Hooligan Factor it has to be the KTM. And you can turn the abs off which you can't on a Ducati. I own a KTM 2020 smcr and I think it's a bit of an easier bike to ride and a bit more reliable than Ducati probably. But try them both!!
Does anyone know if it’s possible to fit the smaller tank from the previous model to this new one? I’m fairly certain I’m going to get one but the rear tank extension kind of bothers me when I compare it to the older bike. Not a dealbreaker at all but I’m just curious.
Late response, but no it doesnt do any harm, in some circumstances it is actually better to use the clutch, like if your cruising at a steady rpm and want to change a gear, its more smooth to use the clutch. If your pulling like a madman the quick shifter will be more usefull
I was real close to picking up a 701, there were a few around here for sale around with low miles and wings exhaust, then I saw the vid on the new smcr last November and i was all in.
@Mansacktastical I love it....i ride it to work 2 or 3 days a week...have taken it to a track once. Its really fun to ride , has a ton of power, I'm 5'10 , 210lbs and it has always responded by putting me to the back of the seat

For the same reason they added a tach on the previous generation, because people want one. Its a supermoto but most of them will never be raced
Really no need but at just shy of 10k and considering it is really a road bike it should have a trick tft dash for 2019

Late response, but no it doesnt do any harm, in some circumstances it is actually better to use the clutch, like if your cruising at a steady rpm and want to change a gear, its more smooth to use the clutch. If your pulling like a madman the quick shifter will be more usefull
Quick question: Would you guys pick this or a Hypermotard 939 2018?
Already got my deposit down on one
Ed Gbur when will it be available
I talked to 3 dealers in the los angeles area and they say it's looking like late march
Ed Gbur I’ve always wanted one. Bought a 701 last year and just put a arrow exhaust on it. Sounds way better. Wish mine had the quick shifter.
Only thing i dislike about modern KTM's are their new graphics and plastics... dont really look like ktm to me anymore
So this is like the Duke, but even more fun?
Man I want one now
well done chris . fucking loved it
