I just got the wholeset, it felt like eternity waiting for it to be delivered and now I want to cover the whole thing in copper patina. I'm so inspired! Thank you for creating such a great product.
I stumbled upon a vid of yours trying to learn more about using epoxy clay and it lead me to this line of products. I am THRILLED to use them. BTW, you're an excellent teacher and quite the character. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I adore Christi's enthusiasm and the way she presents products and techniques. This product sounds awesome. I saw the info on LynzCraftz and immediately visited this tutorial. I will order today. This product line will enable polymer clayers to experience a totally new level of creativity.
Oh my, I can't wait to order this line Christi! I love me some grungy metal & will have so much fun experimenting with this amazing product line! Thank you!
Thank you Christi - I have bought most of your books from Fire Mountain but it was great to hear and see you. I love your sense of humour! You explain procedures in a clear way yet value the incidental experimentation. I’m itching to get my Sculpey out and start playing with the Swellegant. I think everyone would be happy with their creations because of the metal and patina effects, even if they are random or unexpected results. Thank you!
Hi Christie. I have bought some swellegant on an Aussie destash site. It hasn't arrived yet, but I found your video and watched it. I'm looking forward to embracing the chaos. In the video you show a couple of fish. I was hoping you could do a video, or a number of videos, on making and decorating fish. Thank you.
Christi - You're a great instructor! Very clear and articulate, easy to follow. Thank you! Of course, just like in school, I tend to ask a lot of questions and here is one more: - Can I add some dye or alcohol ink to the prep coat?
Hi Christi, thank you for your videos! Please advise, is it possible to antique a chrome light fixture? Do you have a video on how to specifically work on metal?
It is helpful to watch this more than once....especially old folk like myself..lol..you will pickup info you missed before. I have my supplies, can't wait to start. And waiting on my Flourish book to come! Yee haw !
+Pawknee123 . I'd LOVE to see what you've created! I have a facebook page - Christi's Creative Neighborhood - for just this kind of thing - post what you've made and I can see it as well as other fans of polymer art! If you don't do facebook, just email me some of the pics you want me to see, i'd love it! christi@christifriesen.com
+Leah Steel I should do that! ;-D that would be a good little how-to vid! but just essentially you paint it on and follow the same steps as for any other surface!
Monika I'm delighted! The chaos is so embraceable! ;-D have fun! and remember that there is a Swellegant facebook page to share your creations, ask questions and chat about the process!
Can this be baked after applying? (All products - dye, metal, patina, sealant) For example, if you’re making a polymer clay fairy house...and you want to coat parts like door hinges with the metal & patina... Ccan you do that as you go along and continue to bake the house as needed when adding more clay details; or should the metal coating & patina parts wait until the end and then do it and/or glue those bits on? I hope that makes sense! Thanks for all the great tutorials!
Wow, thank you so much for this tutorial, Christi. I'm so excited about the possibilities. This will take my artwork and creativity to a whole new level. Thank you.
Christi Friesen I shared this on Cindy Lietz's FB page. Do you know her? She's the Polymer Clay Tutor, you can find her on UA-cam. I'm hoping she'll include Swellegant in a tutorial one day, lol.
@@ChristiUniverse I know this is a very old video but hope you still answer questions. Can this Swellegant system be used on an air dry clay piece….or even organic clay that has been bisque fired in a kiln?
@@jdmosaics It absolutely can! Both of those materials are actually some of the very nicest things to use the Swellegent metal coatings on because they just soak it up so perfectly! Go for it! You're going to have great success :)
Hi Christie! I love your tutorials because you cover all the questions and angels of a project. I have one question: What is the base coating that you applied before the metal coating? I don’t see it in your Fire Mt Gems shop. I see the matte sealer but not a base coat. Is it the same product? Thanx so much! 🥰😉👍
Hi Ruth! sometimes i use the Swellegant Prep if i need to block an existing metal base from reacting (like a brass metal under an iron Metal Coating could add some green oxidation when patinated) or if the surface is really slick like glass or plastic and i want a good base to add the metal coating to. But usually it's not needed. the Metal Coatings are quite thick and usually do the job all by themselves! If you do need it, and FMG doesn't have it in stock, you can go here: www.christifriesen-store.com/product-page/swellegant-surface-prep-1oz
Christi Friesen Thank you so much Kristie! Luv your videos and you are a teacher that is a pleasure to listen to. I’ve had lots of instructors right up into college..... and you’re one of the best, girl, and a multi-talented artist!!! Thanx a bunch! 🥰👍😉
I’m curious if this would work to change the color of my black toaster convection oven I use for my clay that never gets over 300 degrees? Also if I wanted to do a metal mailbox would it last in the Florida sun?
Hi Christi,Thank you for your video! Can I used these paints to paint aluminum? I am making some jewelry pieces with aluminum sheet (thin) and I'd like to paint the pieces then apply some resin to coat the metal. I am making some pendants.I'd appreciate your reply,Thank you,Annie
I love the Swellegant products! I make jewelry (art) and use the Tiffany and Gold Green on raw brass for most beautiful Verdigris finishes! The Iron first and then Tiffany makes the greatest rust too! Highly recommended products!
I love your videos. I really wish there were more of a close up on some of these pieces you are talking about though. For instance the shell with the seagull droppings look.
Thank YOU so much I cAnt wait to get into some mischief tomorrow..one question. If I have some things that I’m not too thrilled how they turned out, (they are painted and varnished mind you with matte finish. can I apply the ‘primer cOat’ and just begin fresh?
Oh I'm so glad you've been having fun and the more creative mischief the better! Yes you indeed can paint right over. You don't even need the primer just paint more metal coating on top and begin again! Actually, I have found that when I was demonstrating how to use swell again in various classes and workshops, I tended to use the same piece and just cover it again and the more layers that it had, the better it looked!
Hey there. I am trying to use the tiffany green on an aged piece of brass, but it turned the brass a tan color. Any suggestions for using on oxidized brass?
Spring yes! Absolutely! It is outdoor safe and will withstand the elements no problem. It will continue to Patina, so if you have created the patina look that you want and do not want the natural outdoor elements to continue the process, you will need to apply several coats of the sealant. Apply a very thin coat let it dry and repeat! Happy creating and you're so welcome, I'm delighted to share this with everyone because it's such fun isn't it!
Oh, dear ... another addiction just about to land. Isn't that wonderful? Yep, it is. Now , you're going to have to come out with another book all about Swellegant. Can't wait for that book, Christi!!!
NG B I think maybe these Swellegants should come with a warning label, because, yeah, highly addictive! i am working on a Swellegant book!!! I'll keep you posted!
I've watched the video a couple of times and I can't catch if you mention once the polymerclay is coated with metal and patina-no sealer- can it go back in the oven? Can I incorporate the metal coated bits into an ongoing polymerclay project. Would like to add some metal look but would need to add these bits before completing the project. Thank you so much.
This is an old video and she doesn’t answer it seems. I think, in theory it would work. Just take care with any metal fumes that could happen. Use a clay dedicated oven. Also, maybe you could use epoxy clay to add your next parts? It’s air dry and sticks to many surfaces. Good luck!
sorry i didn't see this earlier! oops!!! you can rebake but it sometimes alters the patina - sometimes good, sometimes less good! ;-D but yeah, it shouldn't be any issue to the metal coatings/patina as long as bake it at the polymer clay temperature! by now you've probably already done it - how did it turn out?
Quick question, and I think I know the answer, but I'll put it out there anyway... Can this be used on raw polymer or do the pieces have to be cured before applying the Swellegant process?
Hi, thanks for this video! I purchased several of the dye oxides...violet, coffee and blood red. I also got the sealant. what I would like to do is color a wrapped wire metal bezel on an agate stone. will the dye also color the stone???
+Draya D - sounds wonderful! The dyes mixed with Sealant will work on the wire if it's uncoated, so check that! (the 'non-tarnish' wires usually have a coating on them so look for the raw wire!) You can use sandpaper to get rid of most of that sealer on the wire if you don't have raw wire. Holler if you have questions!
Christi. I was looking for mica power and bought a package of your surface FX at hobby lobby. It has glitter, chalk, and mica.. mixing this with resin, some doesn’t work because I am using the chalk or glitter but I cant tell by looking that it’s not mica an they are not marked. Any that you can help me would b so appreciated. Thank you. Bobbie Brodnax
thanks for that feedback Bobbie! good idea! i'll talk to my product people! And each of those - mica, chalk, glitter - WILL work just fine with resin! each will give a different effect, but they are all safe to use with any kind/brand of resin! which set did you buy and i can tell you which is which if it's not easy to tell by looking!
Kathy McCurry - answers: yes! you can add dye or alcohol ink to any of the products. They play together well. And, no, not effective on raw polymer - i tried it, cuz, you know... what the heck! but it just dries and lifts off. So bake first and then apply.
Thanks for those links Christi. I have ordered various Swellegant products from both websites. (fyi The Metal Clay website did not have some of the items available. I emailed them about availability and they said they may not continue to stock the range).
Beautiful product, Christi! Thank you! I looked up your product on your shop website as well as other few websites like that of Fire Mountain Gems and beads, but unfortunately, I don’t seem to find one that ships to the United Kingdom with a reasonable cost. For example, the shipping to the U.K. on your website was calculated to be 24.50. I am quite unsure if that’s a reasonable shipping cost, it is a little on the unrealistic side. Have you got any suggestions...for instance, can I order a set of this beautiful product from a U.K. shop or U.K. online shop? Is this high shipping cost due to the fact you are going to have to ship it to a residential address, as opposed to a business address? I would absolutely love to own a set of this product and I would highly appreciate your help! Thank you for the reply in advance!
Joode - ugh, the shipping overseas has been such a pain lately! we had major price increases here in the US for international shipping (and domestic too, but not as drastic) and since Swellegant has to be labelled very specifically, our only shipping option so far has been USPS and it is indeed expensive! that price is unfortunately just what it costs, not a lot of 'handling fees'. It's been a real source of frustration for us because i know folks would like the products, but the shipping just makes it prohibitive. sigh. We do have some distributors in europe, but i don't have all the details on that, but i can find out for you from my shipping people! if you'd like to email me: christi@christifriesen.com i'll see what we can to do make this easier for you!
Christi Friesen I sure will email you right now! You should receive an email from me sometime today 😊 I am super happy to see that you are really kind in trying to help me!
Christi Friesen hello Christi, I was just wondering, have you received my email? Whilst sending it, there was an error and I am unsure as to whether or not you received it, but I didn’t want to send it twice in case you did receive the first one. Thank you!
Fran OnTheEdge The Sky Sapphire Blue Patina will be available in about a week on my site, and then shortly thereafter from various sellers in the UK and elsewhere in the world! You can get all the Swellegant product line in the UK from www.PalmerMetals.com and they will have the new patina very soon!!! And, btw, I'll be at the Palmer Metals facility in Coventry in just a couple weeks to teach workshops - one of which is a full "Metal Mania" day where we play with Swellegant and learn all the tricks!!! Here's the link for more info: www.palmermetals.co.uk/christi-friesen-2015.html
Christi Friesen Oh, Metal Mania... I'd really like to do that. Not sure if I can get there though. I do have another question: can you use Liver of Sulpher with the Metal paints and Dye Oxides as well? I was thinking that LoS would work on the silver and copper metals, not sure about the others, or about the dyes.
you won't get much of a reaction... the reason is that the metal is suspended in a clear acrylic base so when it dries it kind of shields it from interaction to a large degree. so if your metal coating is dry, add another layer and put the patina on the moist metal coating! the patina will work fine on regular metals, though, as long as they are not coated with any varnish!
sorry it took me so long to respond Joode! i don't recommend it, because i actually haven't tried that yet... usually the most reliable way to color resin is with resin dye specifically, or with pigment poweders. i'll have to see if they are compatible!
Christi Friesen No problem, I am happy that you got to my comment when you got the time 😊 I am looking forward to hear about the result of the compatibility test!
Yes it can! The metal coating Adheres beautifully to unglazed fired ceramic. If the ceramic is glazed 1st use the prep to create a receptive surface to add the metal coatings.
ok this is weird because i thought maybe the dye was meant to colour the clear gel that is in the metal paint but then she used it on metal.... metal CANNOT be dyed that is why people get it coated, you can see this liquid is just pooling on the surface any enamel would do this too. i'm also not too impressed with the metal paints they might look better in real life but from what i can see on this video they look no more impressive then my metallic acrylic paints or metallic paints you can buy in b&q.
hakanta The dyes in the Swellegant lineup are actually dye-oxide patinas, which is definitely one of the best ways to dye metal. they work by coating and permeating metals for a permanent coloration. I do need to do another video just dealing with the dyes and patinas on metal - my primary art medium is polymer, and I love using the metal coatings on my sculptures to create a metallic shell that is then patinated and dyed. This is a little different from working directly on metals and different techniques are involved. The dyes work extremely well on uncoated/raw metals (which is what they were created for), and the parent company that makes the materials markets primarily to artists working in cast metal sculptures for the specific purpose of permanently coloring them. I will do my best to make another (shorter! ;-D) vid exploring dyes/patinas on metals, because I agree, this one doesn't really explore that as well as it could. Metal can indeed be dyed - just google "can metal be dyed?" and you'll see lots of positive options to that question! So, I'll take your comment as a nice motivation to create another vid! ;-D
Christi Friesen hiya my message was nothing against you personally its just unusual what is said and this company is actually lieing because it is in fact impossible to dye metal as it is not porous. i have looked up dying metals online and all the ways i can find are about coating the metals with a colour even anodizing is a way of coating the metal with a thick layer which can be dyed. it is just like plating a metal. i suppose its all just words but it kinda annoys me when company's lie to get people to think their product is amazing and the only one etc to get people to buy it. maybe these are great paints that coat metals well and give unique effects but if so they should be sold on those merits advertising statements like this makes everyone who believes them a little dumber.
hakanta I didn't take it personally, I knew you were just stating a difference of opinion about terminology and effect, and I wanted to make sure to address your views as best I could. I do have to respectfully disagree if you think that myself or the company that I've partnered with on this product are lying in order to get people to buy the product. I know that selling involves a lot of enthusiasm, and can often stretch or disregard truth ;-) but in this instance, we both are not trying to mislead. Patination, from what I understand (and I am not claiming to be an expert) is a chemical interaction between the patina and the metal and although it happens on the surface is indeed connected to the metal. The dyes in the Swellegant lineup are patinas with added colorants and do (especially when used with heat) interact with the metals, not just on the surface. In the video, I simply meant (and perhaps stated too enthusiastically) that dye oxides are considered by most metal artists to be one of the best ways to permanently color metal. So, I'll take your comments into consideration and perhaps change my own phraseology to more properly emphasize the coloring effects of the dyes. I assume that by showing artists and crafters a way to create aged metal effects I am adding something interesting to creative process, not making people dumber. Thank you for stating your views. I have thought about your opinion, and although i do disagree for the most part, I can appreciate where you're coming from and I can see that changing the way I phrase the process might be more acceptable.
You need to show what you are doing, we cant see what you are doing. Put the pieces in front of the camera. The camera does not move down in front of you & show what you are doing.
Sorry about that Sam - i was in my home studio with only one camera setup - definitely need a second camera right on the pieces, i agree! I have a few more Swellegant vids that i did at a proper studio at Fire Mtn. Gems - usually they show up on the right side of your computer in a column - check one of those out for better angles!

thanks for that feedback Bobbie! good idea! i'll talk to my product people!
Excellent tutorial of the Swellegent metal coatings. Are they available in the UK?
Yes they are Brian! try these two sources:
www.metalclay.co.uk/swellegant/
and
www.palmermetals.co.uk/shop/christi-friesen.html
Thanks for your fast response. I'll follow the links.
you're very welcome! i hope you have a great time creating with Swellegant!
Thanks for those links Christi. I have ordered various Swellegant products from both websites. (fyi The Metal Clay website did not have some of the items available. I emailed them about availability and they said they may not continue to stock the range).
thanks for the followup Brian! i'm glad that you found what you need, and i'll check in with the Metal Clay folks!
Christi Friesen
I sure will email you right now! You should receive an email from me sometime today 😊 I am super happy to see that you are really kind in trying to help me!
Christi Friesen
hello Christi, I was just wondering, have you received my email? Whilst sending it, there was an error and I am unsure as to whether or not you received it, but I didn’t want to send it twice in case you did receive the first one. Thank you!
i'm just following up Joode - Lisa is working with you, but don't hesitate to holler if you need me!
I Christi, may i use swellegant on resin ?thanks.
I was looking for a clear coat for metal jewelry , will the clear finish work for that?
i will in thin coats! (thick layers get milky looking) so i use a brush and a cloth to wipe off any excess
Where do I get these products in Spain?
Okay, where can I get the Sky Blue Patina?
Can I get it here in the UK?
(Love the sky blue colour)
Fran OnTheEdge The Sky Sapphire Blue Patina will be available in about a week on my site, and then shortly thereafter from various sellers in the UK and elsewhere in the world! You can get all the Swellegant product line in the UK from www.PalmerMetals.com and they will have the new patina very soon!!!
And, btw, I'll be at the Palmer Metals facility in Coventry in just a couple weeks to teach workshops - one of which is a full "Metal Mania" day where we play with Swellegant and learn all the tricks!!! Here's the link for more info:
www.palmermetals.co.uk/christi-friesen-2015.html
Christi Friesen Oh, Metal Mania... I'd really like to do that. Not sure if I can get there though. I do have another question: can you use Liver of Sulpher with the Metal paints and Dye Oxides as well? I was thinking that LoS would work on the silver and copper metals, not sure about the others, or about the dyes.
Yes! You can use LOS and any other metal friendly patina or coloring all works well with any of the swellegant and stuff
What is the prep coat?
What happens if you add the patina to a completely dry (not moist) coat of metal?
you won't get much of a reaction... the reason is that the metal is suspended in a clear acrylic base so when it dries it kind of shields it from interaction to a large degree. so if your metal coating is dry, add another layer and put the patina on the moist metal coating!
the patina will work fine on regular metals, though, as long as they are not coated with any varnish!
Would these work with resin mixed with real metal as in cold casting?
+Malia Luika Gentry i'm not sure - i'll have to experiment with that! if you experiment with it first, let me know how it works out! ;-D
Can the Swellegant dye oxides be used to add colour to uv or epoxy resin?
sorry it took me so long to respond Joode! i don't recommend it, because i actually haven't tried that yet... usually the most reliable way to color resin is with resin dye specifically, or with pigment poweders.
i'll have to see if they are compatible!
Christi Friesen No problem, I am happy that you got to my comment when you got the time 😊 I am looking forward to hear about the result of the compatibility test!
.... could Swellegant be used to add patina to clad coin rings?
+Cowboy Smiley Yup! should work great!
Beautiful!
Name of Prep and Dealer Please
Can this be use on ceramic?
Yes it can! The metal coating Adheres beautifully to unglazed fired ceramic. If the ceramic is glazed 1st use the prep to create a receptive surface to add the metal coatings.
thanks Christi!
thank you Jan!
Name of Prep and Sealer product Please?
they are both Swellegant products - the Swellegant Prep and the Swellegant Sealant!
Here's a link for purchase: www.christifriesen-store.com/sweell
I love it!!!!!!
thank you so much! i'm delighted that you do!
never does the stuff cause in time to the polymer clay to get sticky?
EsteeDarla it is perfectly great on polymer! And it does not make the polymer sticky!
C Friesen awesome I got to get this
EsteeDarla awesome! I think you'll like it!
Very helpful & informative but more closeups esp. on the copper/verdigris would help.
i agree Diana! i've been meaning do a new vid to solve that issue! I
@@ChristiUniverse Cool!
Thank you...☺
FYI Renaissance wax is safe to seal polymer clay .
I like your video
😍😍😍
ok this is weird because i thought maybe the dye was meant to colour the clear gel that is in the metal paint but then she used it on metal.... metal CANNOT be dyed that is why people get it coated, you can see this liquid is just pooling on the surface any enamel would do this too. i'm also not too impressed with the metal paints they might look better in real life but from what i can see on this video they look no more impressive then my metallic acrylic paints or metallic paints you can buy in b&q.
hakanta The dyes in the Swellegant lineup are actually dye-oxide patinas, which is definitely one of the best ways to dye metal. they work by coating and permeating metals for a permanent coloration.
