Hard to explain Buckethead. No one knows for sure who he is. Some theorize that he was under contract with a company when he started his solo career and hid behind the bucket so he didn't get sued and once he was free of the contract he was already "Buckethead". Most everyone agrees that he must have been a student at GIT in Hollywood, because of his similarity to Paul Gilbert in style (Paul teaches there and coincidentally we grew up at the same time, in the same neighboring little towns and played on the small scene before he went to LA). For a while it was rumored that he was Paul but that has since been disproven.
@@Frankincensedjb123 True. I see you everywhere btw lol. There’s always a comment from you in every Buckethead video I see. I also see you love Frank Zappa, I’m trying to get into him
Saw buckethead several years ago at a fairly small venue, maybe 500 people in a bar with a stage, and this was among the songs he played... See all those ridiculously amazing runs and arpeggios and the sheer dexterity of execution, the fantastic sounds he coaxes from his instrument? He did all this with similar near-perfection live when I saw it. This guy is a truly excellent musician, a master of the craft. He has released more than 300 albums of his work. The fact that he chooses to perform with a KFC bucket and generic face mask, rather than pursuing personal fame and recognition and adulation, to me is just icing on the cake.
If he starts touring again, and he comes to your area, definitely check him out. A full show of his abilities is astounding to watch. The guy is so versatile and plays so many different styles, all wound into his way of playing. Absolutely off the chain.
BH has a 20+ minute masterpiece dedicated to his late mother Nancy York Carroll. Its called Hold Me Forever and it rivals anything the classic composers of old ever created.
Had the pleasure of seeing him in concert in an extremely small venue. I've seen tons of giant names live, but Bucket will probably always remain my favorite. Jinjer a close 2nd. Thanks for the upload!
I feel like Hendrix would have the same reaction to seeing Buckethead as Clapton had seeing Hendrix the first time (or the same look on his face as the guy on the left with the Be Kind shirt on lol). Amazing, just amazing. I've been playing over 20 years and I can only play Bucketheads "easy songs"...
Buckethead is a unique, insanely talented player. You don’t really have to soak your finger lol we guitarists develop callouses on our fingertips that make playing a lot less painful. Building those callouses is the painful part, hours upon hours of non stop playing to where your fingers feel like they’re gonna bleed. Takes maybe a week of decent playing time to develop. His right hand is just amazing, his picking technique is flawless, he only moves his wrist and fingers, never his forearm.
I like to use hand sanitizer before I play because it dries out my hands and makes it easier to get around the fretboard. I cannot stand having what I like to call 'sticky fingers.'
@@jonlate4581 Oddly enough, the FDA just announced they found a cancer causing agent in hand sanitizer. I get sweaty hands when playing, but I used to use string glide which helped moving around the fretboard.
@@clonexx It is all mostly marketing "wank" so people don't go too crazy like they did with toilet paper and most of other things. I assume you are referring to "their" Benzine scare tactic; look, there is toxic stuff out there, but the scare control tactics are... overboard.
I saw Buckethead in a small venue (Higher Ground) in Burlington Vermont... got to watch this man perform up close... he is incredible... and he didn't say a word the whole time he was there... btw, Soothsayer is my favorite of his work
The craziest part is that this man basically plays everything blind because there is very little chance of him being able to see his whole fret board with the mask.
I hope for the day I can see bucket live again. I’m glad Brian Carroll is taking care of himself but nothing is more magical than seeing this genius live.
These men just listened to one of the greatest guitarists of their generation. I hope it widened their musical horizons to things they never thought they would like.
It's a beuatiful thing to watch and listen to a musician with such a great grasp over their instrument. I really like this composition of his as well. It's both emotional and technically dazzling.
Was lucky to take my son to see him live at the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh, NC. That being said, he wasn't the weird one. That went to the warm-up performer "That 1 Guy". That's not a diss, the "guy" was one of a kind. Played this crazy instrument he developed himself. Recommend you check him out on UA-cam.
I used to sometimes see Brian Carroll in random music stores in Berkeley and Oakland back in the day before hardly anyone knew who he was. You should also check out one of his super emotional pieces like _I Love My Parents._ And I keep trying to get you to check out Hiatus Kaiyote and Stimpy Lockjaw. Side note about BH as a persona. He doesn't just hide his face, he erases and then covers it with a dadaist combo of mask, hair and bucket. So there's more to that move than it seems. That 'costume' confronts stardom, hero worship and just good old fashioned rock ego as a sort of non-person, in a field where its almost all about being larger than life. To call yourself Buckethead is pure self-deprecation by itself, but to destroy the visual/personal side of being a "lead guitarist" eventually leads you to just listening and watching his hands. No rock star facial expressions to distract you, just an onslaught of technique and improv. There are very few musicians to have done, or are still doing something so radical, and so counter productive to commercial success, and still survive and even thrive.

Saw him with Guns in 2002 and was definitely a highlight.
