Fr. Mike continues discussing the call of Nehemiah and how we should approach the work the Lord calls us to do. He explains why all work is divine participation in God’s Kingdom on earth and encourages us to remember our service to God and to others, keeping our focus on serving and loving in the realm of our influence. Today’s readings are Nehemiah 3, Zechariah 14, and Proverbs 20:23-26.

I believe it was this day's readings that talked about taking care of our own house, but also offering to take care of our neighbor's house. I am the receiver of neighbors helping me due to my age and health issues. When people come and dig out my car in the snow season, quite often I "pay" them in homemade spaghetti sauce. It's my mother-in-law's recipe loved by all. They don't usually take money, but they will take sauce.
Thank you for this series. I have always wanted to read the whole Bible and now I can; it is one of my daily disciplines. Next January, I'll start on your Catechism in a Year as I am a convert and I'm sure I will learn A LOT.
Father, may everything that I do this day, whether it be full of joy or pain, whether it be full of love or of grief, I ask that everything I go through today be offered to you just like Jesus offered everything to you. It is in his name we pray. Amen. 9/29/2024

Buildings and names, oh no what can be said? turns out quite a lot, I had missed the daughter reference for a start, to share your knowledge with us on the other end of this is like unwrapping a present everyday. Also work takes on a different perspective when we ask God to "come with" (another video I know, but it has stuck with me)

A big lesson to behold, sacrifice among others is our response to honouring God in first commandment. What a treasure, what a blessing. Thank you Lord for Fr Mike & this family, bless us all. The building of city walls isn’t done without planning. People must have been given assignments - those with greater skill working on gates and other more prominent areas that required greater skill, while those who were less skilled or had less physical strength would have been told to work on the plain areas opposite their homes so they would later be able to point to the work and say, “I helped build those walls,” and to look out on that part of the wall that was “theirs” with a sense of accomplishment in this great task.

Have you seen the walls in Jerusalem? Super hard to build and it seems nearly impossible to tear down! The 'Broad Wall' just how do you destroy that wall? (Hezekiah's new wall measured about 22 feet wide (7 m.) by 25 feet high (8 m.).)

No such thing as work that is beneath us. Powerful words our culture needs to reflect on.

I didn’t see building the gate in front of your own house as a negative thing. Logistically, it would make sense. It would be more efficient and less disruptive to the family, and they probably would feel responsible for that section. Think of it as if there were a natural disaster that required cleanup and rebuilding a neighborhood. Those who lived away from the neighborhood would come and help where needed, but one wouldn’t expect the families affected to go and work on someone else’s house other than their own.

According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory:
Eternal Father,
I offer You the most precious blood
of thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said
throughout the world today,
for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory,
for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the universal Church,
for those in my own home,
and in my family. Amen.
In her account of another vision, St. Faustina describes Purgatory as a "great crowd of suffering souls" undergoing purification. Further, she says that the souls are "praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid" (Diary, 20)
Father I need your grace again because I am not the witness I want to be.
Each time I find your prayer posted, I pray it, thank you so much for praying for those who can't pray for themselves. Let's pray for this generation to receive salvation too! In Jesus' name, Amen! :D

Loved following the repairs in Nehemiah today - I've been to the Holy Land and could imagine all of this going on. I entered the Holy City for the first time via the Lion's Gate (which was the Sheep's Gate I believe). Wish I could go again!

It’s a real stretch to ascribe that characteristic to someone who doesn’t want to get involved in anything other than their own business. There may be any number of reasons why a person responds in that way. To decide, or to put a finer point on it, to judge someone’s decision to do or not to do something, is judgmental and/or condemnatory.

To me, the fact that people worked on the portion of the wall opposite their houses is just part of a kind of team work. By doing it this way, the wall was repaired quickly, in just 50 days. It could have been discussed and planned that way.

Wondering if this is where I should be, this is what I should be doing takes up a lot of my time. Today’s lesson was such a relief…after a career that was God’s plans because it was so not what I planned , I enjoy time in Bible Study, Nature, Quiet. But sometimes These seem like guilty pleasures. Maybe it’s just a timeout and God has some other off the wall Plan for me!! It’s such a comfort to know God is so involved in our Lives!
