I think leg kicks became more of a thing in MMA cause nobody was checking them cause they weren't thrown really hard, it was like a jab in a kick form just to land a strike for the score card. But people start throwing them harder, then people start checking them, and eventually there's more leg breaks from throwing kicks then we've seen before. The thing with leg kicks is people will argue for their inclusion, because its more practical than not having them, but are they worth the risk of a broken shin? At the end of the day if you are good at leg kicks you are also good at kicking someone in the nuts which is clearly the better target than the thigh in a real fight.
In a real fight I say do whatever you can to win, but be prepared to get shamed or possibly jumped for fighting dirty. And to answer your question it depends, because leg kicks are extremely effective but if you’re gonna be a kickboxer you have to condition your shin, set up your kick’s properly, and to add way more to your arsenal, like knees and oblique kicks.

Had a double compound fracture from a motorcycle accident in 2016 and even now after surgeries etc it's still painful and tender to touch weight baring on it for long periods of time is just agony so for me I can't get over how these guys just batter theirs it's impressive to say the least silva's comeback fro that injury was incredible so yeah liste to Joe and friends if you gonna boot each other strengthen those shins I promise you don't want them snapping

We were a part of the cross country team, but we regularly played soccer afterwards because we loved it so much and loved to socialize and we were great friends and we were Savage, shout out to any former XC runners. Now, the person who drew contact with me was the brother of my former team mate and he played tennis. Two very different sports, specifically I can distinguish the microfractures Joe was talking about, which is always a hot topic for runners. So, we hit each other's shins and I left with a giant welt on my shin and the initial strike was horrifically painful, truthfully the worst physical pain I have ever felt( I have never broken a bone, which is about as worse as it gets im guessing) but my shin held up and it healed and I'm sure his felt just as fucked up as mine. I believe I didn't emphasize sufficiently the pain of shin to shin contact, just saying it brought me to a full stop and limp and I had to quit there. years later(now, 2020) my shins are much more sensetive than they were when I ran miles and miles and miles year round for 4 years. I kick my younger brother impulsively, not pathologically or maliciously but for fun because I like to play rough and watching so many UFC fights has propplled my love for physical attacks (lol) and a small kick stimulates a type of mild pain, granted my tibia isn't what it used to be :)

Every bone from the mid of the shin to the toe, completely shattered. After the surgery he was told that he would maybe barely walk after a year. He takes a cycle of strong steroids(cant remember which) and within 3 months he was WALKING, with a very slight annoyance, not even pain.
