All finished I loved it. Just before adding the last dry brush of the light blue, I wasn't sure I liked the amount of yellow. I was thinking it needed toned down or less of the yellow showing. Then as you added the final highlight of blue on the edges. It popped. Really enjoyed watching you make and design your leaves.
I just found your channel and I am a fan and have subscribed. Your attention to details is wonderful and have answered lots of my questions, like how to use as a fountain and birdbath. I like your style and colors. I first started liking leaf molds when I saw Little and Lewis from Seattle on the Martha Stewart, many years ago. THANK YOU!
Little and Lewis are fantastic inspirations of mine,I actually had a very brief phone conversation with David years ago. Thanks for the kind words , and there are a whole bunch of "leafers " at the DIY molds.com website.
I have been making a few castings and I find if I paint with a dark brown or black first it really gets into the veins. I then add color over that and just build the color. I really like the results. I really like your work and the leaves you are using are just beautiful!
I've been promising myself for 3 years that I am going to try this. This year I definitely am. What paints do you use? I'm in the UK so not really understanding the paint you mentioned. Thank you, your tutorials are awesome and your products ruddy amazing :)
Good morning Linda ,and I apologize for my tardy response. Thanks for your kind words .I use acrylic paints, but this may be easier for you ,this link is for a friend of mine in the U.K. who does some amazing painting as well, this might be more helpful for you, ua-cam.com/users/dramamask2011featured and thanks for watching.
That is an awesome leaf! I am planning to cast some leaves and have been researching. How long do you have to let the leaf cure if you want to paint it? I haven't decided on painting mine, but I might want to. Thank you!
You should wait at least 10 days before painting. Keep your newly cast leaf out of direct sun and wet it down a couple of times a day with water ,to help with the curing process. Can even cover with plastic as well. Thanks for watching.👍😄
You're welcome ,that's a good approach ,start small and work your way up.Be careful though ,leaf casting can become very addictive!🤣😜 Good luck with your projects.
I think the Gunnera leaf makes the nicest looking cast and I was wondering where in the world do you find a Gunnera plant at? I would plant one just for casting.
First find out you are in a suitable area for them to survive. There are a lot of online nurseries now that do carry them for sales ,check some local to your area and see if the have or can get you one.
I hope you don't mind if I ask you one more question. If I cannot find nylon fibers to fortify, I have seen other tutorials before I found yours (which it the absolute best imho) and they were using Quickcrete Vinyl Concrete Patcher. What is your opinion on this?
I think you mean Gesso. Gesso is used to fill in the voids in canvas before painting. Not necessary on concrete.I mist my concrete with water before painting, and start painting while the piece is still damp.Wait 24 hours then protect with a water based concrete sealer (2 coats).
Hi Ruth ,thanks for the question. We don't discuss pricing in an open forum like this, sorry. This question has come up before,If people are wondering what to charge for their efforts you have many factors to consider.Your location, what will the market bare, quality of product, skill level of producer, sizing, difficulty level, rare species, time spent on pre and post production. As you can see many things to consider to determine a price. We have sold leaves from $10, to the multiple of thousands for a single leaf.
Thanks for this video! Do you have advice on painting concrete cabbage bowls like this? I've made several concrete bowls out of cabbage leaves, & brussel sprout leaves, but their veins aren't deep & I just can't get a second color to stay in the mild veins. I really want to find a way to define them. I'd appreciate any help!!
love how you explain every little detail, thank you
Thanks Albert ,I try to be thorough.
I do a dry brush so dark first then I dry brush light color over it but I love this idea
Yes, either way .Always goos to experiment and get some awesome results...no rules.

Do you use gusso before you plant as a primer?
I think you mean Gesso. Gesso is used to fill in the voids in canvas before painting. Not necessary on concrete.I mist my concrete with water before painting, and start painting while the piece is still damp.Wait 24 hours then protect with a water based concrete sealer (2 coats).
