Hi Ryan, I've never commented on youtube and I don't know if you'll read this but I just wanted to let you know something. I went through the roughest period of my entire life in the last few months. My life completely fell apart due to circumstances that I had no control over and I almost went homeless. I watched your videos every day and they were the light that helped me escape from nihilism, meaninglessness and completely giving up. I've found a new home now and I am continuing my Master's Degree and will not give up. I know you've helped so many people out there but the principles you espouse and preach have changed my life and will stay with me forever so from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

After renting our entire lives in the San Francisco Bay Area my wife and I bought a piece of land 750 miles away in the mountains of another state. I've been working on it for the past 6 years. I raised our Timber Frame cabin last October 2020 from lumber I milled myself. Put the roof on in May 2021. About ready (next week) to haul my new (to me) Massey Ferguson Industrial tractor to the property. Six years ago almost all of my family and friends told me that "you're crazy" , "can't be done", your too old (I'm 65), "what are you thinking?" Well, they aren't saying that anymore. I now have a power in me that is unstoppable (other than death!) But I'll tell you something if I die tomorrow I will have lived a life of blessed wonder and left a lasting legacy to my family.

Your story reminds me of what Charles Bukowski once said "You can't beat death, but you can beat death in life." In my opinion, every critic is a dreamer that gave up. Nothing is impossible to he who will try! I'm glad you followed your gut and made a monument to your dreams. A dream that you can actually live in.

@@aj37ful Thank you. It's actually a product of Joseph Campbell's idea of following your bliss (which is different for each of us). Magical things will happen and before you know it your are living the life that you had once only dreamed about.

Tomorrow I will have my first public speaking. A webcast event about young people in the work life. I used to be extremely shy and I am still not good when it comes to presentations, I stutter, forget what to say, my heart rate goes up when calling phone calls etc. But I have had practice, first at school, then at my workplace. They called me and asked if I would be interested to be interviewed, I had to tell them to let me think for a little bit. And I thought that I don't really want to do it, but I need to be brave and take it for the experience as this is quite easy thing compared to what I aim to do later in life. I told them yes. I managed job interviews, this is not any more difficult. Just keep calm and it will go just fine. Just got The Daily Stoic book in the mail, thanks for making these videos!

@@Kevin-kj5th Went well in my standards, I was most awkward of the 4 but I didn't stutter, just spoke a bit slow and sounded a bit more nervous than the others. Heart was racing in beginning but as I didn't need to speak more that 1min at a time, I had time to breathe and calm myself, so it was a really good practice experience. At peak the event had 800 concurrent viewers online so not big stakes.

I have to fly this Saturday and boy I am scared... gosh! Scared of flying, scared of feeling claustrophobic, scared of having another panic attack, and scared of scaring other people on the plane. And then watching this I realised that I am adding OTHER FEAR on top of my usual fear. If I get claustrophobic or have another panic attack: so be it. I am new to the thinking in terms of Stoic philosophy (less than 6 months of conscious learning).
I cannot stress enough how much more this does for you in the same time as “yogic meditation”. Just in mere terms of “my mind is never quiet and I have given over a ton of my energy to time wasting reflection, to everything but what I can control and change”.
The title of the study of “Stoicism” has been the most intimidating portion to overcome. The rest is just putting one foot in front of the other. Very soothing practice.

That "what would others' think" is a highly toxic aspect of human nature. Stoic Practice helps alleviate that issue. Journaling every day morning and evening is not easy, but courage brings the energy forward, to fail, get up, and continue. There is no time of "I have magically arrived", LOL. Thanks for your important work.

For an old fashioned modernist example anyway

We are afraid of physical pain, too. Perhaps we should not think of fear as something that is only a barrier to self-realization. It was a bunch of people who had no fear, or who held beliefs overriding those fears, who carried guns into battle of every war, and those who put book sales over the betterment of other people, particularly those who cannot fend for themselves. I hold a Masters in philosophy and work in nursing homes--there is a shelf life to this stuff. You should absolutely care what others think of you. Life after a certain age is decline management.
