RIP Bob Grant (Jack Harper) and Reg Varney (Stan Butler).
Every time I see old buses I think of you both laughing.
Thank you for many years of laughs, you were brilliant.

The Sixties “...during which many famous names would disappear....” Metro-Cammel Weymann’s at Addlestone where I was taught so much
in the late 1940s and early 1950s until I went for my National Service..... A great place, full of splendid People, and am so sorry all is now in the
largely forgotten past...but I say and from my heart May the Good Lord Bless Them All, Each and Every One....for they were wonderful people...
    Really!
Excellent doc. and the commentary superbly excellent, good vocal tone, balance, content perfect....but could have been much longer [ and that IS a compliment and well deserved...!] ....
Well done! Thanks a million for making it available for us “oldie viewers”! And God bless you all!

I don't know why, but buses have always had my interest. They are all great in their many forms. Thanks for the video.

Oh for the days when a bus journey was fun you could rest your feet enjoy the view let the driver n conductor look after you
Going to work ' school' college ' or home ' nights out in town ' the bus was there for you they changed this system for financial
Gain ' and ruined a great public service were you felt safe travelling and were shown courtesy and kindness by the bus crews

In the late 70's and early eighties, these older buses became the vehicle of choice for the festival attending community, but with many having the guts ripped out and being maintained on a shoestring, few survived the scrapyard.
Photos and videos of the festival at Stonehenge, which I went to in the late 70's and up to '83, show some beautiful old buses, usually with very creative decoration and additions!
Thanks for your knowledgeable narration and collecting these clips together for our appreciation. Regards.

Some of those Sunbeams were in service until 1986 in Johannesburg South Africa. Municipal run.

Enjoyed the glimpse of the Portsmouth trolleybus at 6'57". Shame it's in b/w because they had a very attractive livery. The start of many trips with my mother was by trolleybus from Clarendon Road, Southsea on holidays in the 1950's
Nostalgic to see the long gone names of the High Street chainstores, Burton Tailoring, Finlays the tobacconists, etc, and ads like the one for Vernon's Pools on the buses.

With modern tram systems reappearing in British cities over the last couple of decades or so, from Edinburgh in the north to Croydon in the South, why I wonder are trolleybuses not also making a comeback? Without the need for rails a trolleybus network must be much cheaper to install than a tram system. In Europe both trams and trolleybuses seem as popular as ever and never really went away in some countries. Why did the UK think differently I wonder?

My memory of the trolley bus was its acceleration compared to the diesel bus . I wonder if the new electric cars will have that same acceleration.

These systems only work to purpose IF you want to make a go of it.
So many scheme's were abandoned too early.
All that was needed was a dedicated appliance of science, to create flexibility of working.
By going off grid and using say 40+ mph performance from a suitable diesel engine for out of urban area operation, would have been the best of both worlds, but alas no such wisdom prevailed, and so the demise of the Trolleybus as it was, eventually secumbed to motor bus operation.
Modern systems don't have so much ugly overhead wiring required, but with the latest hi tech principles, like batteries and Hydrogen as well as other alternative fuel souces available, that's progress I guess!

@ 2.00 "conquered by the legendary RouteMaster".... Before the RoutMasters (RMs), there were the RouteTravellers (RTs). No mention of those.

    • @colinloc

I think the RM was conceived as the replacement for the trolleys whereas the RT worked alongside them?

Somewhat late, but thought it worth mentioning that RT stands for Regent Three, not Route Traveller.

I was told that RT stood for the name of the engine "Royal Tiger" back in the late fifties at Edgware garage.

In HK here much less brands compares to UK u could find on the road as no more than two to three providers like Aec,Daimler,Dennis in one company. Now even few kinds of buses u can see than Dennis and Volvo at all.

Skid pan. Only a few very large operators had them and not many drivers would have experience on them. I had a ride on one - great fun. Bits of old tramline in the lower saloon to dissuade the bus from turning over.

This is an excellent documentary. I know that because I'm not constantly turning the volume off because of horrid background music. We've (The Current Trend) gone from Electric to Diesel and now back to Electric. Hold onto your diesel cars, they will be back in vogue in a few years.
