I like the fact that you kept things simple and organized. The whole room looks inviting rather than flashy. Personally I've been collecting all sorts games and consoles from 2009 to 2013 or so but the more games I got the less I played. So I don't collect anymore. I've been slowly selling some of it and I try to keep stuff that have a story associated with. Nowadays I try to keep things as simple as possible. I have a hacked Wii for NES, Megadrive and PC engine emulation and an arcade cabinet. Other than that I mostly play PC games nowadays and VR.
Love the closet set up, that's a perfectly curated collection. Eventually when I stop moving every 2-3 years for work I can get all my stuff out of boxes and tubs and put something together. I've amassed a lot of the years but I like the direction you went where everything has a personnel connection or cherished memory. All killer no filler!
I'm just starting out on mushi and watched your older tricks and tips vid - cool to see you still play it. Very cool that you got into the PC Engine back then. I agree that buying what you want to play is the way to go, i do enjoy all sorts though. Cool vid and dig the Penguin. Tc. 🙋🏻♂️🕹
I like the model train comparison. As a kid I loved the detail in those locomotives and cars. My gaming focus has always been on the 8-24 bit eras. Lately I’ve been really appreciating 2D games made between 1996-1999. Metal Slug, Shock Troopers, the Strikers 1945s for example. Nice looking room K2. That wall color is pretty sweet as well.
I cant take any credit for the room color, it's how it came haha. There is something about that era, modern 2d games sometimes get the right tone, but the delivery device is crap in my opinion. Have to update the game, update the system, the PS5 even has controller updates! If you dont power it off in the correct way it scolds you. Not to mention the subscription services! Metal Slug and Shock Troopers are what they are, faults maybe, but even fine art isn't perfect.
Thanks for the kind words Marko! NES and Genesis are bread and butter for me. Decks, I'd bring to a deserted island for sure. I would miss my Saturn though. Hard to choose. Might make a rambling video about that 🤔
My philosophy has always been keep the games that I have an interest in playing. I didn't understand the, 'I gotta get every sports ball and universally agreed doo-doo games' attitude since I didn't treat games like collecting sets of cards. Now I've become more amenable to the idea of complete set collecting. It's whatever gives people peace of mind--that zen you get from cultivating titles is the same focus and complacency others get when they complete sets. In other words, 'to each their own'. I truly believe set collectors get a sense of pride and peace when looking over their collection whether they play or not.
I am not a collector, but what I have amassed the most of over the last 30 years is video games. I really only keep the games that I care about and would replay. My modest collection is who I am and what I have spent a lot of time doing throughout my life. Every game on my shelf has a personal story and a collection of memories from the time they were released. I think that's what is important in a collection; having a personal history with that collection, and not just having a room full of games for show.
I think that is amazing! I've definitely fallen for "must buy all the shmups" or "I've never seen this NES game- I'll buy it" and the stack grows and grows. Ive done a ton of trimming and im having more fun as a result. You get spoiled for choice and then play nothing at all. What you describe is something I would deem every bit as impressive having some full set that full of bloat. Thanks for the comment keep doing you!
I noticed you said, "I am not a collector," then later, "My modest collection." I think there is a stigma with the word collector. I like to call it my library rather than my collection even though that's what it is when viewed under a different lens. I have no gripes against those who don't play and simply amass a pile. Why should I begrudge others when that brings them a sense of happiness?
Someone should keep collecting if that what makes them happy. I was speaking from a personal view; I have family that collect comics, actions figures and sports cards. The comic collector has full sets locked away in cabinets, the action figures are boxed up and kept in storage and the sports cards have been sold/traded over the years. These collections are hidden and never talked about. My amusement comes from playing and sharing the games, rather than the act of collecting. I understand others may view this differently.
8:57 That yellow dinosaur is Gon (or a knock-off of him). I enjoyed the manga. There is actually a Super Famicom platformer that is worth looking into since it does some very different things. The soundtrack is tied to movement as well as engagement with enemies. Some level progression involves puzzle-solving rather than simply left-to-right. My opinion is biased since I find the character endearing; however, like I said, it does some unique things. The penguin is Pingu. It's a claymation series similar to Gumby except not voiced. It's pantomimed like Chilly Willy cartoons.
Hey K-2, how's it going? Interesting points! The only "rule" I set for myself is that I never stack games or boxes on top of each other -- everything gets stacked up vertically like books on a bookshelf (even the console boxes). While not 100% efficient in terms of space, It makes it all look a little cleaner (in my opinion at least). I like how you mention the concept of creating a space. Sometimes, I'll go to the game room and literally just sit down for a bit, and not much else. Sometimes feels like decompressing a bit. Maybe put on a game, listen to the soundtrack in the menu, and square away any games that I left out. Anyway, thanks for vid, very thought-provoking -- hadn't really thought of it in those terms. Hope you're doing well.
Thanks Jay! Doing well hope things are good your way too. I definitely have lounge sessions in the game room. Even if Im not throwing something on the tv its a happy place to get a little relief from email, work and general responsibilities of adulthood. The sorting and tweaking organizing even pruning of games that don't mesh, fires the same synapses of a lot of other hobbies probably. I know for a fact you have a sick console collection, I wish more of my game decks had the original box, I only have a handful. And the ones I really remember a long gone. Luckily the one I would most like to add is super common: Sega Genesis w/ Sonic 2 pack-in.

Great Video K-2. Love your channel bro 👍🏽 I’m a 8&16 Bit guy as well.

I used that exact same EGM issue as a guide when I first got hard into collecting too! I miss the garage sale scene of 1997. :(
