- As a pet red fox, Ron has to settle for limited territory to run around in... but in return gets quality massages where he'd never get 'em in the wild ever! And AAAAAAHHH, duz it feelz good!! ^^
LOL, Ron is like, half in his 'winter coat' and half in his summer pijamas! Observe the contrast in the two different fur coats he's currently wearing simultaneously xD

Ron is a pet red fox I bought from a licensed exotic animal breeder, in Oklahoma, captive-bred and hand-raised. My state of Arkansas allows pet foxes without any permit needed.
He enjoys a large outdoor habitat and also a small indoor caged spot in my living room. Foxes are said to make 'bad' pets, but I would rather say foxes make wonderful pets!... just rather destructive, moody pets, NOT FOR CHILDREN.

I honestly wouldn't dream about getting a pet fox, it's just lovely seeing them in the wild here...roaming around freely in our back garden like they own it...
But Ron-Ron looks absolutely content with you, which is lovely. Too many ppl are be cruel to pet 'wild' animals.

That is a mechanical vibration, too constant in frequency and intensity for a biological life form to maintain and without moments of interruption (nor does it grow louder or softer in accordance with the fox's distance to the camera), namely stopping to take a breath, while you will note that when a cat purrs, it is pulsating regularly in synchronization with the breathing, and most notably drops in intensity for an instant when the animal switches between breathing in and breathing out.
It is either coming from the camera or from a large appliance like maybe the outside portion of an air conditioner behind him. There is also a continuously maintained high frequency squeal that resembles crickets chirping, and who knows what that tone was that occurred at 0:16, I wouldn't blame either of those on the fox either, probably artifacts of the camera's audio digital signal processing. It sucks when beautiful illusions are crushed, doesn't it?

lol, no... just close to passing off his winter coat xD and the summer coat is still very short... but growing out moar every day xD
He was running around like a maniac just one hour before this video, when I was playing with him, with the remainder of the fox plushie I gave him for his birthday last month... I just wore him out enough for him to sit still for a while!

We American fox owners have yet to hear directly from any person that has gotten one of those Russian foxes in the USA. But dozens of people have American raised pet foxes.... breeders are all over the US. Over a dozen states allow for legal pet foxes too.
From my experience, the only 'prerequisite' for owning a fox, is building a good size outdoor pen which is fox proof... covered and not possible to dig out of. It is best to raise a baby fox indoors though.
It is more of a murr then a purr, Other thing is that it reminds me of a broken 2.99 used ebay microphone xD, But its still cute!

well, most look very similar... only the rarest of their foxes actually have the floppy ears and curly-ish tails. Of course, as with American pet foxes, and fur farm foxes, there are dozens of color morphs or phases of the red fox, that show up more readily in captive breeding, than in the wild.

Dog actually make the best playmates for a fox, from what I gather, but it could be difficult since some of the dogs may not accept the new, different animal species.

lol... it sure does look like that, when he loses ALL that poofy, extra Fluffy winter coat!! It's almost comical xD Most people do not realize how small and light weight all foxes are.. since they are used to only seeing pictures of wild foxes in their winter coats xD
Does he sit still enough to be brushed?I'm sure all that shedding ans new fur must itch! I was surprised to see him sitting still until I read that he wore himself out a little earlier, You're so lucky to have the room and be allowed to have him,just as he's lucky to have a home and life with you!

It's not really purring, just unique foxy sounds xD They have quite a tremendous variety of noises in their vocabulary!

no... he just looks very thin, compared the the ULTRA MEGA FLUFF he wears half of the year... xD Foxes are much smaller and lighter built than any of the other wild canines. And because of their high activity level, they rarely get overweight.

actually, where tail meets body is one particular place that Ron does not want to be petted or brushed... and ironically, his hips are the place that need to be brushed the most, to help the shedding. He also loves it under his 'arm pits', of his forelegs. xD

meaning.. if he was in the wild, his 'territory' would be a couple square miles... with me he only has 700 sq ft of territory, in his outdoor pen, and a small caged area indoors. xD
But as a beloved pet, for his whole life long, he gets many more goodies and scritchings with me xD

Much like dog fur, but extra long and thick xD The undercoat is much more fine and soft than most dogs too xD

Not at all really... just about any medium or large size dog is far more capable of being dangerous... a fox is very small and weak compared to them, though foxes do nip and bite more than dogs, but with less strength.

Very much like a dog, you can give the same vaccines (though when it comes to the assholes in congress, they do not legally recognize the effectiveness of the vaccines on foxes, though loads of evidence exists to support that they do work).
Yeah, just use a regular canine dewormer several times a year as it instructs, and I use FrontLine monthly for prevention of fleas and ticks. They need a high quality dog food extra high in protein and fat...

I hope you don't mind me asking, (because I'm sure you get this alot) but where does one acquire a pet Fox? I heard about Russian scientists breeding incredibly friendly domestic Foxes, but I didn't hear anything about how to get one.

A pet fox was a dream I've had since I was very young... I finally found info on the internet about being legal, and available in the USA. I got Ron from an exotic animal breeder in Oklahoma, I left a deposit for a baby fox the year before they'd be born, and picked Ron up when he was 6 weeks old. ^^
