for those who don't know: the epic of gilgamesh is widely considered to be the oldest known work of literature in the world. when i last checked people are still working on improved translations, which is why there are several different versions (the newest one i know of is from 2005) though the differences are not very severe afaik. the ancient one (his name was ziusudra) was very likely the inspiration/origin of noah in the bible: he is warned, builds a huge wooden boat to survive the flood sent by the gods and there is even a bird that returns from a trip with a twig in its beak. the cultural context is very interesting as well, many great achievements have been made in that time and area, including writing and the wheel. also beer :D
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH THIS WAS AMAZING. I completely understand the story and actually really love it. You really helped me out to give me a better understanding. Great summary, imagery, narration, music, it was great!
The story has the power to mesmerize people and the bewilderment caused by it, through the universality of themes and the fairy-tale style of the structure. Brilliant animation, indeed.
My favorite part is that Shamhat (is that how you spell it?) bangs Enkidu for like a week and when they're done Enkidu somehow understands civilization. It's so weird, I love it.
Gilgamesh: Thanks for helping me kill Gugalanna, you did a really great job. Enkidu: I just smacked Ishtar with one of the bull's legs! Gilgamesh: *YOU WHAT!?* (This is a part of the story that is not mentioned in the video) (For those of you who don't know, Gugalanna is the Bull Of Heaven).
I’m in 6th grade. We watched this in class. My teacher said the full story isn’t appropriate for our age, but I don’t care, my brother made my childhood ruined.
THANK YOU!!!!!! THANK YOU A THOUSAND TIMES!! I've tried to search for it so many times. I even put the video through several music detectors without any luck at all. thank you!
Oh my god.. how could I have missed the mention of an original author of the animation in the credits, it lead directly to an answer in the comments on one of his videos. Now I feel awkward, but still, thanks.
This is like The Alchemist; he has to go through lots of experiences and situations while on the search for the one thing he wants to only to, in the end, realize that he already had all he needed.
Ikr I remember enkidu dying due to him being cursed by gods for killing the heaven's bull as punishment for gilgamesh. Also gilgamesh being prompted sex by Ishtar was the reason for this.
The part that I knew was that one of the goddesses wanted to marry Gilgamesh so she went down and he rejected him. And she was the goddess of death and plagues so she sent down the bill of heaven and they killed it so she was mad. So she went to her dad,(the leader of the gods and goddess) and told him. So the gods and goddesses were mad. So the goddess of plague and death gave Enkidu a sickness, so Enkidu doesn't just "fall ill"... And then Gilgamesh didn't want what happened to Enkidu to happen to him, so Gilgamesh goes to Hades, to gain immortality. But Hades says that it's not Gilgamesh's destiny to become immortal. So Hades tells Gilgamesh to stay awake for three days and he will be immortal. But Gilgamesh said he could do it, but he ended up falling asleep right then and there. So he failed. Annnnnnnnnnnd pretty much the story is about Gilgamesh trying to get immortality.
and war and Unfaithful and cruel to her lovers, in fact, so cruel that they would either die or suffer from her love. All, whom she spoiled with her love turned into wild pets of lust.
Nope. thats a very one sided perspective to state that the whole story is about Gil wanting immortality. In fact Ishtar/Innana wanted to know gods real name and thats why she tempted him. He rejected her and she got mad. She even killed Gils best friend Enkidu who is also known as Adam.
"when i entered the house of dust on every side the crowns of kings were heaped" wow so deep for something written 4000+ years ago still so relevant today a true classic. very cool animation!
They say our brains were significantly larger 20,000 years ago. As technology grows, our need for heightened awareness and intelligence for or very survival diminishes.
Hays I remember this, this is the video my grade 7 Ap teacher forced us to watch but I don't understand even a single thing. Now that I need to learn this again, I get some infos, how great HAHAHAHA
moral of the story: read the actual poem. a few differences just like movies now adays. gilgamesh was not asleep when the serpent took the plant in the actual epic. he was bathing in a water hole lol
There's got to be more of those plants at the bottom of the sea. Go back and look, but make sure you've slept first and that there's someone to guard the plant when you emerge, just in case your narcolepsy strikes again!
I remember how in Freshman year, we had to select a certain Epic and make an essay on it for English class. I did the Epic of Gilgamesh, because all I had to do was google “what is the oldest epic in history”
Moral of the story: Sleep is for the weak.
chuck norris
Nonsense! The moral is just stay quietly at home and leave off from silly questing demon killing.
Yep, sleep is for pussies. Pass the meth.
Derek D Does meth make one write intelligent comments?
Yep, in the user's mind he is a genius.
The art-style here invokes that of Samurai Jack.
Oyea it does! Nice observation

But before Gilgamesh landed the final blow, I tore open a portal in time! Throwing the king into the future

I can see it
Enkidu was actually chill with the animals and when he slept with that woman, the animals reject him.
Gilgamesh "Hey bro I'm having nightmares about being crushed to death by a golem "
Enki "chill bro that's totally good luck!"
If only he had a coffeemaker
Jesse wru lol
I would think that they had epherdria and maybe even opium poppy's.
How sad. The moral of the story is that while a man may not live forever, his creation will.
But the walls of Uruk are gone now...
Ro Bastard But not his story.
Sometimes the stories outlive the archeology, and vice versa.
@@aylbdrmadison1051 if not for archeology the epic of gilgamesh wouldn't be found by accident
moral of this story is bullshit
his story ain’t tho
Incredible to think that the epic of Gilgamesh did actually reach immortality; we still tell it today!
Listening to this cuz I have a test on Gilgamesh tomorrow 😂😂
OMG me, too!
Fuck we will do some reporting about it

"The Ancient One" does sound a lot cooler than "Noah"
It’s just dawned on me; they must of had some really good drugs back in ancient Mesopotamia

You should read The Lost Book of Enki, it tells a different story and I think a far more accurate one
praise our main god, Enki
Looked it up and got a story about aliens. Is this right?
Thomas Eubank Pretty much about the Annunaki coming to earth and what they did here
No. Read the tale.
What about Ishtar and the bull of heaven? That is how Enkidu actually dies.
That's not how Enki dies, they skipped the whole part about Ishtar and the Bull of Heaven :/
Yup
so glad i can watch this online without my noisy classmates
Chelsie1215 same here

This would be an amazing full-feature film.
I always think the same thing.
Huh. That was a bit different from the version I read.

Very different.
I can't find the book online
There's different versions bc of cultural traditions.

Seriously could the voice at the beginning scare the hell out of me more than it did.
Nostalgic.
Can't believe Gilgamesh would fight against King Arthur in the future. That's wild!

beautifully made. youve got a subscriber
Lol I have to watch this for school great story! :D
this is wrong. Enkidu didn't eat the Shepard's food he helped the animals escape and he ate grass according to the original text.
Andres L. Jimenez was just saying the same thing to myself.
Exactly what i thought
There are actually a lot of flaws in this version of the story.
Different translations of the original text.
@@vervilion There are tons of different versions and ways to tell the story and they have all been mixed around. There isn't a 'right' one.

thank you. this video is awesome and i will use it to teach this epic on wednesday
My geography teacher assigned me with this video to watch
This video has inspired me so much. The first time was in 2013. I will never forget this. I really want to know who made it.
That sounds a lot like king Nimrod's story. He had so many names.

amazing video. love it😄
The Ishtar and Bull of Heaven part is omitted here
