"Is Gilgamesh a roll model, no". Yes he is. Roll models don't have to start as perfect people. The whole point of the story is that he becomes a virtuous man.
Literature - “written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit.” The pyramid text hold the title of oldest piece of known literature.
@@lautheimpaler4686 Nope, but the word "literature" is subjective. Gilgamesh is written as a story and is the first of its kind. The pyramid texts are funerary texts. They have some myths, but they are not in the same genre as Gilgamesh.
In at least one version of the Gilgamesh story I've heard, Gilgamesh rejected Ishtar's offer to be his lover because he'd heard that she had killed everyone else who had been her lover. So, he was actually being kind of smart in not wanting to date her.
Is it just me or does Humbaba seem to be a dragon? A lion's head, a birds feet, a snake's tail and scales seem to be describing an eastern version of a dragon to me.
You missed the point that Gilgamesh inscribed his travels upon the stone tablets to share his wisdom with his people. Therefore, he was willing to be vulnerable about his mistakes along the way in order to teach his people. In that way, he is a hero. You are assuming he didn't listen to Shamash nor listen to Siduri, that he didn't learn from his mistake in refusing the union with the goddess, but by writing it down, he is acknowledging their guidance. He became a hero through reflection...as we all do.
i think the fact that he fails makes him the real hero. sometimes in life, no matter how we try things wont really work on our side. but we should put our utmost best even in the face of our greatest challenge. tbh i find Gilgamesh more of a hero than most Heroes in hapilly ever after stories.
any other tragic heroes someone can recommend?! i mean the really obscure ones?! we all know about the Hamlets, Romeos, King Lear, Julio Cesaer, um who is that Nordic tragic again?!
Siegfried? Well, technically I guess he counts as Germanic more than just Norse, depending on who you ask. To me another tragic hero is Don Quixote. Also the movie version of William Wallace, for a modern story in the list.
Two morals of the story: If you have a magic plant that grants immortality if you eat it, EAT IT! If a snake eats it first because you stupidly set it on the ground, go back to where you first found it and see if there is any more!
Well he did went back collected it for his treasury but never ate it realizing that death gives meaning to life. Also in death he could probably bone Enkidu again. I wonder would he chose king Arthur even if Enkidu was there hmmm....
..."serial rapist" doesn't quite describe it right. It is what it technically was, but you phrase it as if he just randomly tackled women. It was more he made every woman who got married have sex with him before her husband. Still messed up, but you could have described it better here

Yeah he would have easily won if he just used the noble phantasm that Shiro couldn't even read... I mean did we forget that that man has a fighter jet for some reason...so yeah seems pretty o p to me
He was especially known for exploiting the King’s right to sex with all subordinate women. “Gilgamesh does not leave a daughter to [her family] nor the maiden to the warrior, nor the wife to her husband.” (It’s good to be the King of Ur, apparently) In desperation, they appealed to the gods to get him off their back and their wives. This, then, is an ancient story about good government, as well as a lesson for humanity on how to live in the world. It suggests that the key to being both a good king and a good man is to have a sense of limits, especially sexual. All political leaders should read it!

Thank you so much for this video! This is for college work and definitely a paper later on for the course and this video helped alot. It is similar to one of my favorite mangas like Berserk, Zetman and to my own personal stories I create (animation major) surrounding themes of humanization, the power of human will, heroism, patriarchy, accepting reality, your destine faith, and moving forward in life. This is why I always love CrashCourse! ❤️
And after all of these events, he was supposed to have become a good king that the people could love. (I think that this was part of the actual Epic, but not sure)

It's not really surprising actually. Alexander the Great caused a huge influence on the culture of the Middle East and India during his campaigns, then when he returned home he brought their culture back. Art history shows massive changes in Greek and Indian styles from that point on. Not to say he was the sole cause of exchange, but he certainly made waves compared to the trickle down the silk road at the time.
I loved watching this episode when first uploaded, so much so I grabbed the Stephen Mitchell version from Audible. I'd highly recommend it for more of the story, and very keen insight to the epic's deeper meaning.
Your summary is all wrong! At least the one you do in the first minutes. Gilgamesh is not disrespectful to the gods, he is simply BORED. He needs adventure, something like transcendence, but the tale speaks of accepting life as it is (quite the contrary of monotheism). He doesn't go to hell to rescue Enkidu, he goes to seek Utnapishtim to have eternal life.
He rejects Ishtar because she had an habit of not being faithful, and cursing and killing her spouses. Also, beer was one of the greatest technological advancements of Summery, being considered one of the reasons humans started to settle and create civilizations, one of the first reasons for widespread agriculture. It's not hard to see why, in that context, it would be associated with wisdom.
Florian Cramarossa no, it's because she is known to be the one to inflict the terrible fates onto the men she chooses. And those fates aren't death they get turned into various creatures or disfigured, but none die at her hands
Gilgamesh, went out seeking inmortality and failed. Still we talk about him 4500 years after.

Remember that time time Gilgamesh had Enkidu trap Alexander the Great, and then he proceeded to kill him? I genuinely cried...
"Is Gilgamesh a roll model, no". Yes he is. Roll models don't have to start as perfect people. The whole point of the story is that he becomes a virtuous man.
The Epic of Gilgamesh is THE oldest piece of literature in the world, not "one" of the oldest.
Literature - “written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit.” The pyramid text hold the title of oldest piece of known literature.
@@anjoelsallas isn't the text of Gilgamesh older than any pyramid ?
@@lautheimpaler4686 Nope, but the word "literature" is subjective. Gilgamesh is written as a story and is the first of its kind. The pyramid texts are funerary texts. They have some myths, but they are not in the same genre as Gilgamesh.
@@lococomrade3488 The Vedas are not as old as Gilgamesh or the pyramid texts.
@@gwendolyn2001 how does that contradict what I said ?
Wasn't Enkidu created by the gods as an enemy for Gilgamsh to teach him a lesson?
Yes he was, somehow he forgot to mention it. Maybe it was because of the version he's telling or just a mistake.
No, it was to give him a companion.
In at least one version of the Gilgamesh story I've heard, Gilgamesh rejected Ishtar's offer to be his lover because he'd heard that she had killed everyone else who had been her lover.
So, he was actually being kind of smart in not wanting to date her.
You dont really need to be that smart to know its not a good idea to date someone that killed everyone she ever dated
Absolute Demonic Front Babylonia
Is it just me or does Humbaba seem to be a dragon?
A lion's head, a birds feet, a snake's tail and scales seem to be describing an eastern version of a dragon to me.
reminds me more of a chimera
TLViolynn He's pretty much a chimera judging by the sculptures in the video
Maybe it was Tasmanian tiger
let's see, from final fantasy VI Xd, humbaba is a greenish demon with dragon scale, demon horns, and some scale on its back

I'm confused, when does Gilgamesh get his golden armor and blonde hair?
You missed the point that Gilgamesh inscribed his travels upon the stone tablets to share his wisdom with his people. Therefore, he was willing to be vulnerable about his mistakes along the way in order to teach his people. In that way, he is a hero. You are assuming he didn't listen to Shamash nor listen to Siduri, that he didn't learn from his mistake in refusing the union with the goddess, but by writing it down, he is acknowledging their guidance. He became a hero through reflection...as we all do.
"Debility would seize anyone who penetrated his forest"? Wow, that's some great poetry, all right.
brb "penetrating" the "forest"
Stephen Gillie If you know what I mean.
I'm sure it rhymed in the original text
Well, He did attain one form of immortality- His memory lives on to this day after all.
i think the fact that he fails makes him the real hero. sometimes in life, no matter how we try things wont really work on our side. but we should put our utmost best even in the face of our greatest challenge. tbh i find Gilgamesh more of a hero than most Heroes in hapilly ever after stories.
if you love tragic stories, you should read heroes journey from greek's mythology, i think the only happy heroes in the end is perseus
yah. think my best is Oedipius the king. one heck of a tragic story!!
true
any other tragic heroes someone can recommend?! i mean the really obscure ones?! we all know about the Hamlets, Romeos, King Lear, Julio Cesaer, um who is that Nordic tragic again?!
Siegfried? Well, technically I guess he counts as Germanic more than just Norse, depending on who you ask.
To me another tragic hero is Don Quixote. Also the movie version of William Wallace, for a modern story in the list.
Wow Gilgamesh wept, the “Mongrel” line has been reveresed
He wept almost constantly in the original.
Two morals of the story:
If you have a magic plant that grants immortality if you eat it, EAT IT!
If a snake eats it first because you stupidly set it on the ground, go back to where you first found it and see if there is any more!
The dudes 2700 BCE that wrote the story kinda glossed over this point lmao
That is a happy ending.
Or save the effort and eat the snake. I heard it tastes like chicken.
I think he got more of them but not to eat but as a trophy
Well he did went back collected it for his treasury but never ate it realizing that death gives meaning to life. Also in death he could probably bone Enkidu again. I wonder would he chose king Arthur even if Enkidu was there hmmm....
You're forgetting Gils two quick stints in 20th and 21st century Japan.
Those filthy mongrels!
Can't wait for the King Arthur episode.

Facts, fate re-awakened my interest in mythology, legends. and lore.
Well he isn't op at all, on the other hand his weapons are.
why no mention of his gates of Babylon or his noble phantasm, En ?
..."serial rapist" doesn't quite describe it right. It is what it technically was, but you phrase it as if he just randomly tackled women. It was more he made every woman who got married have sex with him before her husband. Still messed up, but you could have described it better here

You forgot to mention that he fought Tiamat with the help of two teenagers from the future because of King Solomon 🤣
*Ah, yes....*
I, too, have seen Fate/Zero
Damn this is different from what I know. I thought Gil was a blonde pompous pretty boy. I thought enkidu was an androngynous green haired clay doll. Man was I wrong.
the mongrels got it wrong
fadel putra Right! Where's the Gate of Babylon? Where is enkidu and gil's enuma elish? Where are the chains of heaven?! Such inaccuracies aren't tolerable
Cake# What about his harem of Ozymandias, Kirei, and Enkidu?
Zeranvor Kirei was too much of a mongrel. He only likes ozy because he flatters his ego. Enkidu is the most useful lover he can be a man or woman.

GOD I LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL BASTARD
*Lost to mass-produced Chinese swords because of his own ego*
How?
no bro , his ego is his only weakness.
according to several characters in the fate series, Gilgamesh is the most powerful servant among them,if he went all out against saber or shiro he can destroy them in the mater of seconds.
Jetstream Snake Again, lost because of his own ego.
Countered himself.

As much as I love Mythology and learning about famous stories it was truthfully the Fate anime series that convinced my brain to watch this video
"Do you have enough weapons stored up, King of Heroes?"
As a native citizen from the city of Babylon myself, I feel great power of nostalgia everytime I hear and read epic of Gilgamesh.
And the end gilgamesh

*"Immortal is not by body, its by deed"*
Gilgamesh Your human body may not have been immortal but your name and story have done pretty well. four thousand years and counting.
Love this guy in CIV 6. He's even your friend forever, without any efforts to be friendly towards him. Or he war-cart rushes you turn 10 and you start over a game without hours going to waste.
I live 10 kilometers from Uruk
I can see Uruk from my house
MopedOfJustice where do you live I live in Khedr
I wanted to brag how close I am to Uruk, but as I turned I stub my toe into it.
No kidding? Here i thought living a few kilometers away from a civil war battlefield was a big deal. You're practically next dor to one of the first cities of humanity.
cool
When i watch this,i imagining this story as fate grand order anime
Kind of is and this part has manga adaptation i think
Gilgamesh loved Enkidu in more ways than you let us know ;)
Also you skipped the best part, where he cries for seven days and nights over Enkidu's death, his grief beeing so powerfull, the whole of Uruk is thrown into darkness and it's citizens hearts are overcome with sadness.
here because of fate franchise (fate zero)
Denish Trivedi yes yes. How dare thy put a judgment on out King Of Heroes!? “Look up and behold! Enuma Elish!”
Mongrel!?
Denish Trivedi lmao sameeee
David Cuellar know your place, mongrel (couldn't resist)
so am I
Do Saber next
Artemis saber is king arthur
which saber there are tons of them
Artemis you should be specific like arthur pendragon or nero claudius
This is the real Story Not the Anime
Saber is class, not names
In my opinion best part about Gilgamesh is that he is 2/3 god. Not a demi-god or quarter-god but a 2-out-of-3-god. However that works
Gökçe Okbay Math is for mortals
Zhaozi *math are for mongrels*
Fixed :3
And it is racist.
www.campusreform.org/?ID=10005
I'm pretty sure his father was a demi-god TBH
maybe the X chromosomes count as 2 and the Y chromosomes count as 1, that will give you the 2/3 god
This video was educational AND fun! I enjoyed watching it and did not get bored. You got all the points across quickly and accurately. Very insightful and helpful!
Gilgamesh, when refusing Ishtar, tells her about the tragic fate of all her previous lovers, making her ashamed but also invoking her wrath.
Gilgamesh is great.
Noah was a fraud...
Today I learned that Disney's Hercules draws heavily from the Epic of Gilgamesh, and that trigger warnings emphasize the trigger by saying it twice.
"Inky Doo"
I've always heard it pronounced as "en-KIE-doo".

Gates of Babylon

Ahh sorry you was talking about Civilization V game :))
@@hassanbassim4007 Isn't uruk the ancient name of babylon?

@@hassanbassim4007 Is it the same location though? cause from what I've read it is located in the same place east of river euphrates.

Darmok and Gilad at Tinagra
Shaka, when the walls fell
/???isnt that from star trek?
and whats this got to do with Gilgamesh Im confused?
Now i want to watch that episode again
The stories are similar. After Picard learns to communicate with Darthon Picard tells him the Epic of Gilgamesh.
The way this video ties in the Hero's Journey with Gilgamesh is majestic. Just majestic.
This really gives a new light to the Fate character for those who didn't really know his lore, for all his boasting he was a pretty shitty king.
Well the fate version of his story is slightly different. If you want, you can read it on the Typemoon wiki.
And after all of these events, he was supposed to have become a good king that the people could love. (I think that this was part of the actual Epic, but not sure)
Sarim Khan In the epic he pretty quickly becomes a better king as once he befriends Enkidu the citizens no longer lament that he is a bad king
Chloe Davis and in turn is better than his counterpart in fate.
Yuwan we still have to know his caster self at the next singularity at the na server
You guys ever thought about the exchange of myths around the world? Like Greco-buddhism, where, for example, the myth of Hercules strongly influenced the Nio, guardians of Buddha often depicted in front of east-asian temples

Greco-Buddhism! Yeah! And the Tocharians! It's an interesting culture, where east meets west before AD.

The oldest civilizations were sumer mesopotamia egypt china and india
I loved watching this episode when first uploaded, so much so I grabbed the Stephen Mitchell version from Audible. I'd highly recommend it for more of the story, and very keen insight to the epic's deeper meaning.
I just love this episode because it really touches the foundational reason why myths are important and remain to be. Amazing job. Thanks!
Imagine failing so bad people still talk about you 5000 years later
Gilgamesh is so much more than just a nice story.
Gilgamish rejects Ishtar because of her history with her lovers and what she does to them after she's finished with them ( killing them )
Your summary is all wrong!
Very nicely explained
Gilgamesh rejected Ishtar because she is known to let her boyfriends get a gruesome death
Florian Cramarossa no, it's because she is known to be the one to inflict the terrible fates onto the men she chooses. And those fates aren't death they get turned into various creatures or disfigured, but none die at her hands
