  • Samsung's 840 EVO SSD is the mainstream drive that matters. With a better software suite than other SSD makers, Samsung has found a way to really differentiate their drives without just selling them for cheaper.

    Bought 500GB 840 EVO to replace aging 500GB WD Blue drive in a 2009 machine (P55 chipset MB) and am very pleased with the improved performance, even with only SATA 2.0 speeds. Will be able to port the drive to my future machine when I take the plunge to upgrade. Your video is validating my purchase decision. Thanks!

    And now we have _Samsung 860 EVO SSD._ A wonderful SSD. Replaced all my HDD in every single system I have with Samsung SSD's (nine 860 EVO). Not a single issue with them. And the _Samsung Data Migration_ software must be one of the best out there, not to mention _Samsung Magician._ Very, very happy with my Samsung SSD's.

    I put a 256GB 840 EVO in my laptop 3 weeks ago, and I have been blown away by the value for money it was. I run 840 Pro's in my desktop but the laptop was still running a 7200 RPM mechanical drive. The 840 EVO obviously blows that away, but the interesting thing is that it also gives the 840 Pro's in my desktop gaming setup a run for their money. Buy one, you won't regret it!

    Where is our video overviewing Data Migration 2.0 and such?

    • @joegreve6585
      @joegreve6585 10 років тому +2

      Well. After having used Data Migration 2.0 (I bought the 840 EVO)
      I've come to the conclusion that, if you don't intend to exclude anything, and just do a straight carbon copy clone from drive A to B, it's fantastic. The moment you want to exclude something, though, it comes in lacking.
      Here's why:
      You can't exclude whole folders,
      You can't exclude programs (Though, this makes some sense, as it's tricky)
      You can ONLY exclude individual files.
      So since I had about 600GB of data on my 1tb drive and was adding a 250gb SSD, I was forced to use a third drive as sort of a in-between storage..... If you're in a similar situation, I highly recommend either finding an external hard drive or duplicate everything to the SSD (If you're within capacity, of course) and then deleting the things that you don't need on the SSD and keeping them on the old drive (Again, assuming you intend to both.).

    Sweet drive! I picked up one last summer for my main 4770k desktop build and it's an amazing performer! I just had buy a second for my 4670k htpc in my living room. It's amazing how well the Samsung Data Migration utility and the disk utilities work with the OS. I used it on both Win 7 x64 and windows 8.1. No complaints, and being able to boot a fully loaded win 8.1 in a few seconds never ceases to impress me. Now I'm debating on replacing the Seagate hybrid drive on my macbook pro with a 500GB 840 evo. I just feel slightly disappointed I won't be able to take advantage of this drive's special features in OSX. anyways, $140 for a 250GB is a steal!

I'll be getting a 120gb model. I probably would have been happy with a simple Sandisk or Kingston SSD but decided to go for the best I could get within my £86 budget because, you know. Sometimes you just want something you know you won't be disappointed in. I am happy to know that the Samsung SSD is going to perform more than good for me. :D

    • @TheSoxmania
      @TheSoxmania 11 років тому

      personally, as a hardware enthusiast and lover of high performance storage I can recommend both SSDs, Samsung's 840 EVO has always been reliable, the Kingston HyperX is faster and is also just as stable, if you're looking more at a lifetime perspective, the 840 EVO is a better choice, but if you're wanting to extract as much speed from your system as is remotely possible, then the HyperX will be a good choice for you. It's a case of whichever's cheapest with both SSD models at the moment, so crunch some numbers and see what you'll be able to afford easier and still have pocket change!

    • @israelberrios2050
      @israelberrios2050 11 років тому

      Actually the Samsung is cheaper than the Kingston
      And my system is running fine but not at its full speed cuz is running on a HDD Thats why i want the SSD for getting the best possible speed and i want it to last at 3 years at least

    • @TheSoxmania
      @TheSoxmania 11 років тому

      well in that case, you might want an 840 as the TLC FLASH allows for greater capacities and Samsung tend to be reliable drives, even the mechanical disks are pretty solidly made!

    I actually got this SSD about 2 months ago, from your recommendation. I love it. But I can't sit here and not complain about Samsung's data migration software. It eats butts so hard. I had a 1TB HDD, which had about 600GB of games on it. The software wouldn't let me flood that over to a separate drive, so I had to manually delete every game on my drive. And even then, the software messed something up, because I couldn't even boot the drive up. Thank god it didn't delete everything on the source disk (like it said it would) because I had to boot from that. I wound up using Acronis True Image to clone my HDD over, and it worked beautifully. On the first try.

    • @ghostxfairy
      @ghostxfairy 9 років тому +35

      If you've never used one you wouldn't know. It doesn't just improve loading games. That's actually a very minor reason to buy one for me. The OS just feels so much more responsive, programs launch instantly, they never hang etc. Seriously, they're not even that expensive these days so get one. It's the best upgrade you'll ever make to your PC.

      Eric Rogers My Samsung 830 from 2011 is still going strong. It's only 128GB and I paid over $200 for it at the time but it was worth it. Benchmarks show it's performing just as well as when it was new.
      FYI if you have the 840 Evo, make sure to update the firmware. Apparently the original firmware has a bug that gives degraded read performance on old files.

    • @CherryPauper
      @CherryPauper 9 років тому

      ColdNeutron
      I just can't see why I would buy a $200-$300 drive to make my computer faster when I can just upgrade to an i7 for that price. Again, I can't say that I've used an SSD so this is my ignorance and, as a student, I can't exactly afford to experiment with such expensive PC parts.

    • @alecmason7378
      @alecmason7378 9 років тому +7

      Cherry Pauper Upgrading to an i7 won't help at all in the way an SSD does. Having a very fast processor can't make your drive read or write any faster, and your computer can only function as fast as it can write to or read from the disk (in the case of a HDD). I don't have an SSD either (for the same reason, price), but I would definitely like one.

      Deluxed. Gotta disagree on this. The 840PRO is better than the M500, but the M500 shows better stability and writing/erasing life compared to the TLC based 840EVO.

    • @DemRizzo
      @DemRizzo 10 років тому +19

      Okay man, you get your M500 then, I'll stick to my 840 Evo.

    • @supatvshowuploader

      Sorry to hear you had to settle for the M500

    • @sjchun79
      @sjchun79 10 років тому

      Does the difference between TLC and MLC mean nothing? =(
      For writing performance, I know that the M500 scores poor points with the 120GB/240GB models, but with the 480GB model, M500 shows good performance AND good endurance.

      I have been using SSD for about a year. Very little difference to HDD. Windows starts hardly any faster, maybe after installation there was couple of seconds of difference, but now it takes about minute and a half. Installations, game load speeds, application start up speeds, no difference and capacity problems take more time to deal with. For about 95% of normal users or gamers I would recommend HDD.

      miiiikku i also use both hdds and ssds. And they are definitely not pointless! You must have a really bad ssd, either that your you must be running your ssd in a sata 1/2 port =p SSD average read write = 550Mbs up and down, HDD average read write = 70Mbs up and down

    Nice Anandtech article. At least they test it with 100 GB/day, which in my mind is closer to real use than what's often quoted. Review sites often forget to take into account things like memory swapping and suspend-to-disk (which is also what that pseudo-shutdown fast-boot thing from Windows now is). Heck, it could even be more than that. That said, glad to see endurance of this drive, even under these conditions, is still acceptable.
