    ^^buy the Microtech tools at bladehq (thanks for using our links!)
    Join us as we void the warranty on a Microtech Ultratech! You do need a tool that matches Microtech's proprietary hardware. There are at least 3 varieties so you would need to determine which bit you need.
    Once you have the knife apart though they are actually very simple with a relatively small amount of parts, just don't lose any!
    Thanks for watching, give us a quick like before you go!

    Those "little tab things" are the blade locks, and the real strength of the MT design. Precisely crafted with a specific shape, fitted into zero tolerance pockets. That's why MT OTF knives can be hammered through a 2x4 without damage.

    I believe Europe has a new law that products must be serviceable (designed for maintenance)!

    If the blade is deployed, you hold the blade and and slide the button to close it, it releases the tension on the spring. Do this before disassembly and you won't need pliers.

    I like using zeplon dry spray lube, its like a Teflon spray for lack of a better explanation. But it sprays on wet and gets where its needed and drys so it doesn't attract dirt. It will leave a white residue on some surfaces, but I've been able to wipe it away. Not saying it won't stain but I haven't had it stain yet.

    Okay, old post but I have a question; is there a fix for the minor rattle that can be experienced because of the blade pin? It's tight but still...I've tried fastening it with a tiny piece of yarn along the side, but I've read a non rotating pin can cause damage (repetitive impact on one side of the pin). Is this correct and is there a fix? I can live with it, but I'm a little ocd about rattle, even in otf's.

  • @vinnier6
    @vinnier6 4 роки тому +12

    It’s only under spring tension when you move the trigger one war or the other...when it’s open or closed it’s not under tension

    • @joshualamont5768
      @joshualamont5768 3 роки тому

      That sounds so dumb ass man to be able to open it or close it the spring has to be in some kind of tension

    • @hansgruber1974
      @hansgruber1974 3 роки тому

      @@joshualamont5768 That's WHY you have to PUSH the button...to create the spring tension needed to launch the blade followed by releasing the rear blade lock - the blade shoots out.
      There is tension on the spring because it stretches to fit the hooks over the slide plate at each end. When the blade is locked back there is a very slight tension on the blade base before the slide is moved forward, increasing spring tension.

    The design used by MT is quite universal. They didn't "improve" so much as they beefed up the parts. This is most obvious comparing the blade locks to other brands and "non-brands". Other's have slightly thinner locks which means they can be deformed or act to deform the handle material if the blade is advanced through heavy resistance....this is why all the MT fans love to hammer the blade through a 2x4 to show the front blade lock will hold up. Another feature is properly hardened and heat treated components to keep the steel from bending or peening, or the rear hook from bending. Anodized aluminum places a diamond-hard layer of aluminum oxide over the soft aluminum, and this helps prevent the substrate from being "easily" deformed...doesn't mean it can't be, just that it takes more to fracture the anodized surface in order to start spudging the aluminum underneath. While MT advertises the latest exotic steel used in the blade, the real secret sauce is how well the blade and all other steel parts are heat treated. On inexpensive knives it's not the 440C stainless steel blade that's inferior, it's the thinner blade locks, thinner blade cross-section, thinner steel rear hook with little or no post-heat treatment, and of course either bare aluminum which means a soft surface save for the slight layer of oxide that forms naturally, or Zinc alloy which is quite dense and heavy, but also relatively "soft" and more easily deformed.
    MT OTF knifes are really more of an example of how good you can build a universal knife design when using quality components than anything exotic....and that's not a bad thing because the simplicity of the design helps to make the knives more reliable. Remember, the parts you leave out, can't break!
    Having said that, in a SBS comparison I suspect the Benchmade Infidel is ultimately the stronger design. It starts with a steel chassis frame which adds strength while the handle slabs add stiffness. The blade is locked by twin locking arms on either side, and those arms are hinged to the steel chassis. The "weak-point" of the BM design might be considered to be the miniature leaf springs placed in layers to tension the front and rear locks, but in the right application leaf springs can last nearly forever, and if broken are easily fabricated - much easier than fabricating a miniature coil spring! The blade locks, beside being hinged on the steel chassis plate, are held in place by the steel slide, and all stress forces are carried in-line down the plane of the steel. With the aluminum, or Zinc in the case of clone knives, handle halves screwed down tight from both sides, the steel chassis plate is prevented from buckling. I don't remember seeing anyone doing a hammer test on the Infidel but it might be an interesting comparison.
    Another interesting comparison would be to see the hammer test performed SBS with an authentic MT and a clone version - done by an independent tester to find out just WHERE The cheaper clone knife gives up the ghost comparted to the 10x more expensive MT or BM.
    The REAL comparison would be both knives carrying out the normal uses...cutting cardboard, tape, stripping wire, slicing off small branches maybe, and being plunged into a human torso and head constructed of ballistic gel with simulated ribs and skull. I doubt anyone outside of a UA-cam video is carrying around an expensive OTF looking for opportunities to damage it beyond repair doing stunts any $20 fixed blade knife could do better, faster, and without any concern over potential damage.

    It says on the manual that simply disassembling doesn't void the warranty, actually. There's a pdf of the manual on their website if you've lost yours.

    How relevant is this video to new ultratechs? Their marketing material says the springs are always at rest in both the closed and open position which is the opposite of what this video says.

      it's classified as auto, one button push. but ya you could consider it spring assist at the same time.

    Microtech springs are NEVER in tension whether opened or closed. That is information straight from microtech. Why do people keep saying that the spring is under tension? Visit microtech.com for any technical information.

      Specifically to piss off snowflakes like you. It is true however, it must be considering the company itself published something stating it as a fact.. companies never lie or get things wrong. Ever.

      I'm not sure that's what MT told you. Want to know how you can tell? Because IF the spring were not under any tension, that would mean the hooks are just laying across either end of the slide. It would also mean the rear hook is just barely touching the non-tensioned blade. Shake the knife front to back and you'll hear all manner of parts clatter and click back and forth!
      Because ZERO spring tension would mean vigorous shaking could move the parts relative to one another. There MUST be tension on the spring and that tension is initially created with the spring is STRETCHED to lap the hooks over each end of the slide. MT MIGHT have told you the BLADE is not under tension when at rest and that is unlikely due to tolerance stacking, but more, with the blade held "in" by the rear lock, if the rear hook exerted zero tension, it would be possible to make the blade rattle with vigorous shaking...same when deployed out front, without any rearward tension on the blade, once locked ahead of the front lock, the blade would have detectable play...something every armchair expert seeks to expose! By having some tension on the blade at full open or full closed, the blade can't be made to "rattle" around inside.
      And what does it matter if the blade has "resting tension?" Modern coil springs last almost forever and even stretched they don't wear out any faster. What wears out a spring is CYCLES! The millions of times you click the blade out and in eventually fatigues the spring, but even then it will almost always fail by breaking at the end loop, not one of the coils.
