I forgot about this camera until you mentioned it was a digital 16mm sensor. As soon as you said it, I knew what killed it. The OG BMPCC with its cheaper 16mm CMOS sensor. It produced similar results in 2013 for $995 around the same time the Ikonscop declared bankruptcy.
I really hope that something similar to this camera will be released again. With the rise of s16 becoming popular again; I feel like this or a D16 mii would have a better chance nowadays
Good to know! I definitely want to check it out. Really cool how you used the camera btw. Did you enjoy getting to film with it? It's pretty finicky for me getting files off of the camera without them breaking
@@FrameVoyager If you have problems on your files, it means your card has an issue, not the card reader. But yes the Iko cards are the real problem in the Iko eco system. I just finished another movie in super16 mode with the same director and I decided to shoot it on RED Gemini in 2K... and in the end I had much more pleasure shooting on the IKO... There is no art without limits ;)
That's good to know! See it's weird though. When I transfer files normally from folder to folder, they break randomly, but if I pull it into resolve and then export it I don't have the glitched files. Too bad there wasn't a way to convert the thing to work with an SSD 😅
So pumped you reuploaded it! Also LOVE the look o the footage from this camera. I have a Digital Bolex and really want one of these too. I think they stand out so much from all the modern digital cinema cameras everyone is using. They also have such a rich texture to the footage, almost feels organic.
I was not expecting Göran Olsson to be part of this when I clicked the thumbnail haha, Black Power Mixtape and Concerning Violence are two of my all time favourite documentaries.
Cameras like this are just exciting. The unknown territory of digital cameras in the 2000's produced some really unique solutions. We seem to have a lot more convergence of design these days and less creativity around the building of the camera experience.
If you had a way to share a few of your shots with the camera for us to tinker with, it would be sooooo awesome. :) Cool video, I'm glad to see it back !
I was trying to get one of these back when they were going to be released. I never ended up getting one. I did end up with a Red One and I have never looked back. Currently shooting with A Red 8k Helium. But something about the look of that Ikonoskop I love.
Does anyone know how many cameras were made? Jon Yi's Coney Island video is still probably the best example of what the camera is capable of (shooting wide open on a super speed helps too), whoever color graded that did a fantastic job
Ok, thanks for the Ikonoskop! Such a heartbraking story, it will always have a special place in my heart, there is still nothing cloae to it. It was a little too early for this concept I guess 😢
Not the first 16mm digital cinema camera. That goes to a couple of S16 imaging sensors that were hidden in the mags of ARRi 16SR cameras around the mid to late 2000s. The first was actually promoted by the "Mitchell Camera Company" (they bought the company name) it was a full year before variation from P+S technik and another model distributed by Gecko Cam.
This is a cool camera that has 3 main problems that makes it a risky choice for filmmaking. First, the calibration always fails at some point, Making the quadrants visible in low light situations, no matter how carefully you do the process. Second problem is the propietary cards and reader, and the third one those limited 11-13 stops of dynamic range. Nice unique camera though, mostly for collectors. If a new version of it was released, with standard cards, 4K resolution, no calibration and at least 14-15 stops of dynamic range, it’d be a stunning camera.
There were rumors that they were going to make a double Super 8 film camera back in 2005 out of the 16mm film version. Never heard of the digital version.
Take a Canon EOS M, throw on some vintage lenses and a variable ND filter, shoot at 1/50 shutter 24p, 1600 ISO in daylight, expose for the highlights and watch the magic.
great video man, the camera look is gorgeous and it really does the 16mm thing. I tought you would mention its usage on the movie "Enter the void" by Gaspar Noe, Cuz Benoit Debie use is it for the POV shots if im correct. But again, great video!!
Hey, sorry to post here but wasn’t sure how to contact you. In the mid-80s, Alan Gordon used to advertise a high-speed 35mm motion picture camera called the “Image 300,” which was advertised in American Cinematographer and Millimeter magazines. I know it was used on STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME and on a movie called DESERT BLOOM, both released in 1986, I think. Since you’re the guru of obscure cameras, I figured if anyone knows about it, it’s you.
The guy used the metabones speedbooster for the OG BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera, and then manufactured in a warehouse a way to make it for the Ikonoskop. Not sure if he adapted the Nikon mount or the Canon version.
This is possibly one of the saddest of the abandon camera stories, because the image from this camera is amazing when lit correctly.
I’m thrilled to see this video back up! I absolutely adore this camera-it’s my dream camera. If you know anyone selling one, please let me know!
I would avoid it. Having shot with the thing, its not great.... very difficult to work with and lots of issues
So cool to see this camera being remembered! I wish so badly that someone would make a CCD cinema camera again. Their images are so beautiful!

Arri has introduced a s16 mode that crops its sensor down to the s16 size on the 35, I’ve been really wanting to play with it
@@jeguschristie4300 I have too! I think it’s great that that option is there but a dedicated S16 digital camera would be amazing.
Really glad to see this video come back and be improved too. I absolutely love this series.. one of the best video series on UA-cam.
Appreciate it!
Nicely done! Thank you for taking the time to cover this camera and go hands-on.
First time my work is in a UA-cam Vidéo !!!! Thanks.
By the way The Other Laurens is out in the US this august.
Good to know! I definitely want to check it out.

absolutely love the form factor on these cameras, love this series too, keep up the great work!
Awesome to see the video re-uploaded!
I really miss the Abandoned Series... Really the whole camera series
This is my favorite series from your channel. Hopefully you find the time to revive it 🙏

maybe Silicon Imaging SI-2K MINI for the next one.

Hermosa cámara, muchas gracias !
I’ve longed for more abandoned cameras series. Could even do a kind of “legendary camera” series. Stuff like 5D Mark 2, DVX100, etc.
Honestly kind of waiting for some stuff to pile up a bit so I could do like a 10 episode run
what a gorgeous camera, such a shame. I've been wanting someone to do this kind of approach and think it'd be more successful now than then.
Take a Canon EOS M, throw on some vintage lenses and a variable ND filter, shoot at 1/50 shutter 24p, 1600 ISO in daylight, expose for the highlights and watch the magic.
Throw magic lantern on the EOS M and you have a cinema camera for $150

Ah good to see another video even if its a kind of repeat.
Its back!
Well, seudo back.. hahahah
I literally owned one of these, but not for very long.
Makes sense. From what I hear it's hard to get earthly goods up there into heaven
Wow - very cool! - you should start preparing for Panasonic abandoning their cine line.

Fran 8k neon sign 👀
It is very film like. I kinda dig that look myself.
I have always wanted one of these!|
Also Kill premier and adopt resolve. SO much better and I have far fewer headaches thanks to the switch.
I missed the original upload
This is the kind of camera I would have bought back in the day
I really miss this series. Are there no more abandoned cameras? 😭
Not enough to keep doing it 😭 it was always going to be a limited series. But I'm keeping an eye out for more! Probably need about 10 solid ones
si2k 2006. First cineform raw camera long before the pack.
Wait, does anybody have an idea what adapter the DoP of the Cannes film could've used? sounds like he used two adapters (pl&speedbooster) stacked?
The guy used the metabones speedbooster for the OG BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera, and then manufactured in a warehouse a way to make it for the Ikonoskop. Not sure if he adapted the Nikon mount or the Canon version.
Similar result with less hassle and a lot cheaper with the OG BMPCC
interesting cam
the first 16mm digital camera was the Sony f23 an after that SI2K way before Ikonoskop
Keep it up!!
Welp, time to watch it again
Any idea how that DP got a speedbooster in there?
Global Shutter Uncompressed Open RAW format.. all that in that early camera
Can you tell me what is the name of the movie that appears at minute 13:14?
I shot a short on one of these!
The sequel!!!
Omg 16mm I think that's smaller than my 1 inch smartphone camera sensor
1:45 and everyone just lies down and takes it.
9500 was the the problem if they sold it for 2000-3500 maybe more would’ve budged
Anything to avoid the si-2k
I want a 16mm CCD digicam revival please
the form factor looks an awful lot like another abandoned camera
Does anyone have this camera. I'm looking to buy one
ABANDONED: Director's Cut
is the video supposed to be blurry at random parts
That was the "offending footage" lol
@@FrameVoyager lol i was so confused, gz on the vid
The saddest part of this whole thing is to find out that you’re a Premier user. My heart broke just a little bit.
haha I'm just so built into Premiere with so many custom hotkeys and setups it just would take too long to change over to Resolve
@@FrameVoyager I’m a much older gentleman than you, and I just made the switch a couple years ago. It’s never too late to change laddie boy! :)
