    Recently started to use a medium weight Ortlieb Drybag ( 79L roll top ) inside my pack, which allowed me to do away with extra dry bags ( still use v thin nylon non waterproof stuffsacks to compact some things) and makes it much easier & more compact to pack. Also no need for a Rucksack rain cover.
    Like the extra feel of security it gives - knowing everything will be kept absolutely dry !
    Will never go back to individual drybags / plastic bags etc for Backpacking trips from now on.
    ( Tent & possibly Waterproofs will need a waterproof stuffsack if packed inside )
    Love the channel, all the best from "Sunny" Scotland.

      Sounds like a good plan that mate. I do like the different dry bags because I know what’s in what and I can have them out of the bag and know they’ll be dry. Also a bag cover stops the bag itself getting soaked, dealing with a soaked bag in a tent is harder than dealing with a rain cover I recon but the Ortleb dry bag is defo something I’d consider

    I know their is some resistance to using military spec backpacks with hikers, and I'd agree when we're talking about the standard 'Bergen', but I'm using the 75L Karrimor SF Odin, and its amazing. I've found I can carry an 18Kg load, for far longer in comfort, than I can carry a 16Kg load in any 'civilian' backpack. Adjustable back & shoulders, So many attachment points for extra storage, a heavy duty water proof cover, and built to a far stronger standard than anything else. As for Winter sleeping bag I use the 3 season Alpkit Cloud 9 (750g) with the Alpkit Nemo quilt (450g) tucked inside, with the foot end cinched tight for my feet to go in, so the quilt doesn't ride up in the night. Far less bulky and lighter combination than a large 4 season bag like the Rab one in this video. That combination gives me a sleep system that is suitable for all seasons.

    I am a very experienced day hiker but am beginning my wild camping adventures this weekend, I’m just wondering, how do you cope with the long hours of darkness during winter camps? I’m obviously a bit apprehensive about and was hoping for your advice? 😊

    • @SunTours-Adventures
      @SunTours-Adventures Рік тому +3

      Yes, I always include that question in my planning, too and that's why I stay at home during the very short days.
      In my experience, everything is a little more difficult in winter and takes a little longer - so you "use up" more time in the evenings in the camp. You can make a warming fire, it takes a lot of time and warms - old saying: "Wood warms three times: when collecting, when chopping, when heating!"
      And because the whole day is more strenuous than in summer, I can also sleep longer, starting with the fact that I get tired earlier than usual.
      So now at the end of February, beginning of March, the days are already long enough for a good balance between daytime activities and sleeping time.

    • @HazzM
      @HazzM Рік тому +1

      For the occasions where a fire isn't possible then sleep early and rise early/ catch up on sleep. Take a good book or films/entertainment.
      Alternatively, wait for longer days and go wild camping later in the season.

    Is the 900 sleeping bag enough for uk winter am just thinking do I get the 900 or the 1100

    • @johnfletcher9907
      @johnfletcher9907 Рік тому +2

      My advice… get the 600, and wear all your clothes in it. I wear a base layer, lightweight fleece, a second fleece/ synthetic jacket, and then a big down jacket/ belay jacket. Then leggings on my bottom half and if necessary my walking pants as well. ….All that plus a down sleeping bag is plenty.
      For years I would keep all my spare clothes in my rucksack and cart a gigantic heavy winter bag around. Then I saw the light and now I’m a happy man. In summer I can still use the rab alpine 600 just in my underwear and if it’s really hot unzip the bag and use as a duvet. One bag for all year. Thanks my 2p anyway. 🎉

    • @HazeOutdoors
      @HazeOutdoors  Рік тому +2

      All depends if you’re a warm sleeper or not mate. I used my alpkit pipedream 400 all year round and that’s a 3 season bag. I just layered up with down jackets etc but these days I go with the scent 900 as it’s only 500g more and gives me a lot more comfort on those really cold nights.
