i quite like the not over-the-top look personally, i think they added just the right amount of sporty flair without making it overly aggressive.
Exactly. Its a secret racecar😂
I think they could have done that with GTI. With R, they should've gone for more agressive look. My fiesta ST mk7 looks way sportier albeit being slower on paper..
Precisely. I'm 48 years old, the styling alone killed both the CTR and GRolla for me, right out of the gate.
The Golf R/GTI's modesty is one of my favorite details. It's clean, no nonsense, and well proportioned. My current daily is a Mk7.5 GTI DSG Autobahn.
Hey Crew....I've got the Key to this Golf R and here are some donuts.......brillilant
Fresh and ready!
@@MilesPerHr😂😂😂😂😂😂 It looks tasty
Hey Miles, quick note - while the GTI has a front e-LSD, the R has it at the rear and has an open diff up front.
As always, great video!
Thanks for the note!
America, a place where 90% of people can't drive manual, they offer manual on Golf R, but in Europe where every driving school car is manual (except if you're trust fund baby) and everyone knows how to drive them, Golf R is only offered as manual. Same thing happened with E60 and F10 M5.
So you don't like manual?
Wow didn't know thus learn something new everyday. And it's always a first time for something.
What you waffling about Golf R comes in both manual and automatic in Europe lol
@@glen9620 no it doesn't. You could order limited number of US spec manual cars in Europe, but manual was never an straight from the dealer option in EU.
Who gives a flying f. Oh wow manual look omg lol. “Here in Europe we drive manual blah blah blah. U American Yankees 90% don’t drive manual blah blah blah” cope.
love ur videos
they're really entertaining and informative
road to 500k
Thank you for the support!
Got the R in manual. Love it👌🏻
Actually, not sure if you got that info wrong when it comes to the drive modes wrong when you went over the 22 R with DSG, but, 50% of the torque can be transferred to the rear in multiple modes, not just in Drift mode. Also, the Special mode actually softens the suspension, not making it firmer. And you must be referring to the GTI or front wheel drive cars with torque steer. There will not be torque steer in Golf R's due to the 4motion driveline. And, you can setup a shortcut icon for the stability when you swipe down on the screen as you'll have 4 shortcuts you can configure.
love ur videos they're really entertaining and informative road to 500k. would love to see it stanced .
Got a manual R and am happy with it. Love the looks and the features.
Still miss the VR6 sound of my 2004 and 2008 R32s…defected the brand when they moved to 4 cylinders. Having a 6 in a compact hatch, now that was unique
agree.
I dig the Golf R but I ended up buying the Type R couple weeks ago and don’t have any regrets.
Love my 2017 Golf Mk7! Golf R would be something special... maybe one day
I love a manual, but if its not a good manual (rev-hang, numb clutch engagement, sloppy shift feel..) , I'd rather have the auto option.
Agreed
Exactly. It's almost the same as the non R, "normal" Golf versions in this generation. I don't like it either.
I just test drove one , I thought it was fine . It’s not the sportiest but i liked it still . I guess it depends to what you’ve driven in the past . I did drive a wrx and I preferred that clutch more . I’ve also seems that the manual has a variety of perspectives on the UA-cam review area
Drove the Hyundai Elantra N last week, thought it was a lot of fun, it handles very well with nice rotation into corners and it sounds pretty good too. The owner had a short shifter on the manual and it was also a very nice gearbox. I think it would be more fun than the Golf R, Honda Civic Type R or GR Corolla...having said all that I haven't driven the others, except the last generation Type R. I prefer the Elantra N over the last gen Type R
@japanwatchconnection you are only a troll. every video you're pooping on things like you've contributed anything to society ever. get a life, don't be so caustic.
@@japanwatchconnectionyour loss
I have a Golf R line automatic 2004 in manual mode when I use it if I go into say M7 after a short distance it goes back to D it doesn’t stay in Manual gears should it stay in Manual or is it right to go back itself to D I’m sure it sure stay in Manual
The Audi RS3 and Golf are look just pefect. They don't have that boy racer look which I much prefer
Please teach me how to shift my mk8 from 1st to 2nd smoothly. It feels so clunky I can't get it to just shift smooth.
That look good 🔥🔥🔥
1:28 it’s a performance vehicle and the top trim level but it has regular 2 piston floating calipers? Brembos aren’t a standard option?
I love it. I want one. The design is exactly what I expect in a proper German sports sedan. BMW and MB sedan designs have lost their way, generally.
Pity in the South African 🇿🇦car market it's very rare to get the MK7/8 GTI/R in manual transmission because we always get the automatic versions that are very expensive to maintain moment the DSG gives way☹️
I got to drive that car for couple of days. Main problems I have with it (manual version) are gas and clutch paddle. they don't have linear response at all, it feels like u are just getting 3 actuation points and that's it. also with shifter it's really hard to shift it in to 5th and 6th gear. Also turbo lag is noticeable and steering ratio just changes randomly was really hard to understand it.
I’ve heard there’s a spring on the clutch pedal that makes it “easier” but the feel is much better if removed.
6:36 would you not use the steering wheel controls while driving? Just thinking logically here.
San Gabriel is such a fun drive
Gotta say that's a really nice launch you did there, i would've stalled the car lol
Great video... I would choose the Golf R with the dual clutch automatic transmission
You should also get your T levels checked
I love this car. The design is perfect imo. They just need to fix the infotainment. If you’re going to move everything there, it HAS to be fast and responsive, and this just isn’t. I think people over exaggerate how bad it is, but it would definitely be a daily nuisance. I also wish it had a bit more sound insulation to match it’s premium positioning in the market.
the infotainment is quite responsive, it just takes a bit to boot up on cold start. also this car is based on a luxury car platform so the NVH and sound insulation is already good
Having owned both the mk7.5 and mk8 R, out of the box these cars will leave much to be desired but with a simple stage 1 ecu tune they really come alive... these motors are so capable stock
What?
was the 8 better?
@@Hunter1Lane The 8 is better. I still enjoy the 7.5 for spirited driving, but the 8 is overall the better car.
The jolting of the car when pulling the clutch up is your own fault, you're meant to add a little gas as you pull the clutch up fully
Yes, the design is too modest for the performance. When I look at the Scirroco (wasn't available here), it STILL blows most cars away with it's timeless design AND it came as a 2 door. Don't get me wrong, I love the "R" but it is a very Conservative design. The Scirroco look was/is absolutely epic.
This or a limited trim WRX?
MKBHD mentioned you in his latest AutoFocus video 🎉
great car!
I think it needs more glitz... just a little. The new "R" badge is difficult to read, unless you already know what it says. I'm not ready for an everything-on-the-touchscreen car. I have the 2019 R, so I can guarantee it's fun to drive.
They need to put traction control buttons on the blank buttons next to the shifter
Nothing to object .......
Very excellant car
Great driving
& a superb
well performanced car .......
Thank you very much .....!
I'm a Sri Lankan fan .....
🙏👍🌹❤️
Why do you type so weird lol? English does not require different structure, just make sentences like you would in your own language
Glad you liked it!
for 50 grand they could not kick in for an engine cover??
They were recalled. Fire risk lol
@2:25 that colour match on the rear bumper looks awful maybe its just the light and camera angle but doesnt look right
Nice jeans man
Wish I could afford this one..
When will these manufacturers understand that we want actual buttons for things??
They removed the rev hang!!
Amazing cute car :3 ❤
would love to see it stanced 😏
The real question is how long before something breaks
can´t wait to see one in Germany 😅
On the German Autobahn
@@jasonchow6475 and on normal streets.
Gosh I would think all that shiny black plastic letting off all those reflections right in front of your face would take some getting used to.
Yeah, my Golf R DSG constantly does 0-60 in 4.2, the fastest being 4.1 with no rollout. Almost 1.5 seconds difference is inexcusable and puts the manual in GTI DSG territory.
@layne4376 I drove the manual Golf R it's easily the worst manual of any hot Hatches produced today. Toyota, Honda and Mazda were making better manuals in the 90's than it. smh
sure, designed to be soulless. I couldnt imagine mine with the dsg, its very neutered already and the only excitement i get in it is the shifting.@japanwatchconnection
@japanwatchconnection did i stutter?
0-60 time should consider and factor in 2 shifts and being in 3rd gear by 60. So real world acceleration is better than 0-60 time would imply
Does it do rev match?
Watch the video. He only tells you 5 times
imo it would look better as a w door
I think a simple solution to having no knobs for the volume and A/C, would be to implement an AI, then you say "Hey Volkswagen (or whatever you name it)" and say the command like "Turn down/up volume/AC", I think that'd be cool and intuitive, as well as solve a lot of problems.
Knobs are the simple solution that won't break as easily as other technology
How about the 2023 Cupra Leon next?
in the USA? 😂
@@alengreen589 Sure, it can be imported like the VW Golf GTI he tested previously that was lincensed in Germany.
@@32Julien yes you can imported the car but nobody would buy it because it would be way to expensive, in the US the cars are 30 - 40% cheaper as in Europe. And shipping prices are go up extremly in the last 3 years.
@@32Julien the Golf GTI will be build in North America for the American market, it is 30 - 40% cheaper as in Europe.
@@32Julien No, it can't be imported. Cars that are only available outside the USA have to be at least 25 years old to be imported legally. Or they have to be imported under the show and display law, but then your yearly allowed mileage is very very low, because that law is meant for cars that end up in a museum.
The GTI that was registered in Germanymight have been legal to drive over there for marketing purposes, but that wouldn't be possible with Cupra because they are not on the US market at all.
Is driving along side big rigs a thing? 😅Anxiety activated
Hey miles i would like to see more affortable cars from you...something like a skoda octavia or superb! thanks
Sorry, we don't have Skoda in the U.S.
I do show some affordable performance vehicles (did you see the Toyota GR86 recently?)
@@MilesPerHr oh you dont ???! what a shame...skoda has some of the best value for money cars. ive seen all your videos (not the old ones from 9 years ago haha) :) keep it up!
I love the new golf r variant. Looks way better than hatchback in my opinion.
70 mph in 6th gear at 3k rpm...
Yikeeeesss
Guess you’re implying it isn’t made for the autobahn
Why would you want an auto rev matching system to control your shifting when you’ve just chosen (correctly!) to buy the manual? That makes no sense.
I view every downshift as an opportunity to practice my heel-n-toe technique. I’m never going to be Ayrton Senna, but at least I can be as good as I can be. This applies as much to shifting from 3rd to 2nd at 30 mph in the city as it does to shifting from 6th to 5th at 100 mph.
This is especially true if you’re going to take your Golf R to the track. The point is to hone your driving skills at the limits of your ability to control a car.
Now I do agree that the shifting feel is not as good in the Golf as it is in my ancient E36 M3. But that was, at the time it was made, a much more expensive machine. I don’t expect the Golf R to match the build quality of a BMW transmission from when BMW was at the height of its powers. 25 years later, the concerns are different. Sadly, the manual gearbox is not one of them. I’m just glad I managed to find one before they’re gone.
PS Do NOT hold the gear shift lever like you’re trying to strangle it, as you are doing in the video. Hold it with your fingertips so you can feel it better. This is the advice I got from a professional race driver. Seems like good advice.
Swipe down like the iPhones and androids and create a shortcut for the esc. Not perfect but still 3 steps instead of 7
Button Too

Civic type r. Better shifter. Shorter throws, rev matching. More cargo room.

Are you Johny sins brother?
Dashboard look like 296gtb. Which ten times the price. Well done VW
Why do Americans hold the shifter around? XD
Why don’t you have the dsg version
Because he is a real man
reviewers still in 2023: The infotainment isnt good - mean while everyone that owns one has no issues - dont listen to this part of the review from any of these guys - take it from someone that has lived with it for 8 months - its extremely intuitive- its like having a smartphone - everything important can be set up as a shortcut as well.
@@japanwatchconnection awesome dude, hope youre enjoying your ride!!
THANK YOU. As someone like myself that has had my 22' GTI for almost a year, I can honestly say that the infotainment system is very easy to use over time. It is not rocket science like reviewers tend to make it seem.
Just needs a DAZA
lol a 04/21 made tire on a 2023 xD
Love the car. You need to work on your shifting skills. You don’t know how to drive it. I know.
How is a poor media center even allowed in a car at this price point? lol
Piano black high touch surfaces need to die in a fire
It works hard but at a feeling no emotion.😢
I sold my 2023 Golf R, too much turbo lag, speed comes too late. Very disappointed.
Bro American highways look dangerous as eu citizen. Overtakingon on the right, next to a truck looks dooming.
If you are going to say it, at least say 2.0 not 2.O…
