They should have been a huge band in the '70's. So many things got in their way. Loved going to Zach's to see them. We lived right around the corner and went all the time. Their songs were so good, as well as their musical talents.
Yep, you always knew if a band was playing at Zach's, they were great. McGuffey Lane, Spittin' Image, etc. And the solo acts like Gerry Crabbe, Mike Adamkosky, etc. I sure do miss that place.
I remember seeing them at Ruby Tuesday's in 1974-1975. Went there every night after working at the Wine Cellar to watch them play. I left Columbus in 1976 but caught them at Zachariah's whenever I was in town to visit family. Last time I saw them was after they recorded their first album when they played in Nashville about 1981. Great group.
Believe it or not, I was best man for Bob McNelly at his first wedding, to Brenda Thompson, in Circleville. I saw McGuffey Lane only once...at a club in Fort Collins, Colorado, in the early 1980s. Bob invited me back to the "green room" before the show, and he gave me one of their albums, and I found one of their albums in a used record store in Nashville once. I know they also played in Crested Butte. Bob's death and all the circumstances really tore me up. Long live McGuffey Lane!
The guy on steel guitar was my up the street neighbor, Terry Efaw. We lived and went to Athens High School in Athens Ohio..where Ohio U is located. At age 19 Terry was the winner of the Chet Atkins National Guitar Competition!! He was the other half of the duo "Scotch and Soda." In addition to McGuffey Lane, Terry has his own solo easy listening and instructional CDs. He now plays solo guitar at private events and at various upscale restaurants throughout Central Ohio. And to complete the circle, My parents own a home @ 4 McGuffey Lane in Athens. Terry is a great guy who lives and dies with his Cleveland Indians each year...."There is always next year Terry!!" Terry Efaw, Superb musician and wonderful guy!
I remember around 1981 sitting around campus in between classes reading an article in US Magazine. It was a small article, but the magazine billed McGuffey Lane as the next Alamaba. I really believe they could have gone further if it wasn't for the obstacles in life. R.I.P.
this band should have had a national breakout in 1979- Don Imus was in Cleveland playing country of all things at that time and loved this band - drank Jack Daniels-with bobby - their manager could not push them over the top it was the days that Alabama was breaking out in Myrtle Beach, tradegy was soon to follow opportunity lost so sad- the original band tore it up
They always used to play McGuffey's House of Draft in Dayton. I used to think there was some connection, but it turns out it was just a coincidence with the names.
We have a Zachariahs Red eye Saloon reunion every Jan at the LC. Featuring McGuffey Lane and the friends who used to open for us at Zachariahs. Jann 22 at the LC, Downtown Columbus
Love auntie Annabelle, I remember playing this you at the hospital, our goodbyes. Love this song forever

First met these folks when I was touring in Arlo Guthrie's band. Always loved this tune and I'm glad to see that they're still out there doin' it..
