I am done with my big oil painting. It took me roughly a month to finish. How do you prime your canvases? Because apparently there is a whole new world of proper art materials for me to discover.
And also, how do you feel about having to define and explain your art all the time as an artist?

Very macabre/surrealist. If you hadn't said anything about the canvas being too short for the frame, I would've thought it was intentional. I think it's rad!

Thank you for saying "i have to do it or i will fall apart". Everyone here is so stuck on sales. I feel like if i dont do it... my heart will explode. I feel like the work should speak for itself. Explaining limits its potential.

@@redmondartwork definitely agree. Of course I want to also make more money with art, I think that's a very legit thing to want. And artist should definitely be paid for their work. But yeah, I do know that for me it's not even a question whether I will be making art or not. I always did and most likely always will, for as long as I can

I really, really enjoy this painting. And I'm continuing to enjoy your videos. I agree and think explaination of images cheapens them. Part of it is that the experience of art is created when a viewer actually... experiences it, and an explaination or description distracts from that core dialogue between viewer and image. If I look at your painting and describe or analyse it to myself, it births its own meaning, and it has the capacity to do that anew every time I or anyone looks at it. It also is self explanatory... I think this painting is a self portrait, showcasing a particular experience or perception of yours. If I didn't know who you were, it would still be conveying that same energy, even if I didn't understand particulars of it . Meaning is both objective and subjective, stimultaneously. An image always carries its own inherent meaning and message, unalterable, AND, my individual perception of it makes a momentary, malleable truth between the image and I. 🎉

this piece is so beautiful and haunting. i felt so many emotions while looking at it at the end of the video. i feel like an explanation would of ruined that experience so i totally get that! i feel like art and especially yours is so beautiful because i feel like i can learn something about myself when i look at it if that makes sense hahaha. an explanation would take that away.

Some oil paint can rot raw canvas. That's why you 'gesso' them first. Also gesso can be applied and sanded so none of the weave of the canvas shows.

@@vilette5274 makes sense. I don't think anyone likes ALL kinds of art, regardless of how well they are done. I personally usually get captivated by art that has some "creepiness" to it. I like when it feels raw or animalistic somehow. To me that gives a sense of honesty and openness that I so rarely see.
