    If you would like to send a donation to help those affected by the fires, please donate to www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/maui-strong.
    It is heartbreaking hearing the stories of what people in Lahaina, Maui have experienced this week. I live on the Big Island. Myself, my family (and the bees) are all safe and our home was not damaged.
    This video was filmed this week, just before the fires began in Maui. The air is now starting to clear up and the skies are blue again. I hope this video can help those of you in areas also being affected by the high heat. If you have any other tips to add, please leave them in the comments!
    Aloha,
    Laryssa

    Really love your videos, you're a sweetheart. I was 107 in my part of South Texas yesterday, but bees seem to be doing ok. I put in screened bottom boards (temporarily) and slightly cracked the top cover. Otherwise doing everything you suggested--all good advice. Thank you and give your little boy a squeeze!

      Thanks. The stories I have heard from people in Maui are so terrible. You don't think about how many fire trucks there are in your county until something like this happens and you realize how isolated you are and how few resources we have living here compared to the mainland. Very scary.

    At 15:02, are you suggesting the risk of robbing during a dearth outweighs the ventilation benefit of an upper entrance when temps get to the mid 90s? On Oahu, I understand that when it gets too hot, the bees fly over to Waiola Shave Ice.

    I put a wireless thermometer on the top bars in a hive and so far 106F is the highest temp so far. It has been a 99 to 101 F in the shade with extremely high humidity for several weeks now in central Florida. Every few days we get a small shower and the bees are maintaining

      Was it 106 inside the hive?
      I'm having a few of my mating hives abscond.
      Normally, I'll give a freshly mated queen brood, but none of my hives are making brood now...this is so hard on the bees and me!

    • @dwren4554

      @@cluelessbeekeeping1322 the temp was measured on top of the top bars but not inside the colony. The hive is in direct sun and I’ve seen many 105F readings. I’ve read in many older bee books that mortality may begin at approximately 113F , although Laryssa quotes a higher number, I would believe her research is more current and therefore more plausible.

      @@dwren4554 One thing many don't realize about 'polished' or even 'natural' aluminum finish is that polished ANYTHING metal gets super hot. If it's painted white, it's significantly cooler.
      I myself use migratory covers with just painted wood (not that it's any cooler, I think a telescoping cover is cooler). I'm in Austin Texas and my smaller hives are super hating this heat now (we've had a month of over 103. Last couple of weeks have been 106.
      Right now, I can't make any splits due to the heat and lack of extra bees.

    • @BeekeepingMadeSimple

      Good point about the aluminum. The heat is really hard on my bees in the Waikoloa area where it's really hot and dry half of the year.

    • @cluelessbeekeeping1322
      @cluelessbeekeeping1322 10 місяців тому

      @@BeekeepingMadeSimple Try painting a single lid, leave both out in the sun. The one thing about aluminum is that...the oxidation layer makes it very hard for paint to stick & glue (not that you're gluing). If you lightly sand it with something like 600 grit wet sand, then immediately paint it, the paint will stick better & one other step... Use an aluminum etching primer. This itself helps eat away at the oxide and bonds better with the aluminum. Or---just paint it and deal with flaking paint later.

    What I wouldn't give for mid 80s. 107 today and forecast for the next 3 days. We're on day 33 of triple digits in Texas. I live in this mess and never run AC. My hives are bearding like crazy at night. I'm thinking about opening the lids a little at night on my horizontal hives.

    • @BeekeepingMadeSimple
      @BeekeepingMadeSimple  10 місяців тому

      It was 98 yesterday :/ I would definitely open the lids a little bit at night. One beekeeper I talked to in FL puts pennies under the lid to keep it open just a crack if you don't want the hive open too much.

      @@BeekeepingMadeSimple I also put washers under my vertical Langstroth hives during summer but I think it also lets hive beetles In through the top. My horizontal Langstroths don’t have a place to enter if I open them because of the cover boards. They can vent better because I have vented cover boards with bug screen. My lids also have screened vents but opening them should help more.

    Hi Larissa, my bees are working like mad, bringing in pollen, but some bees are removing it, and pushing it off the landing board and onto the ground it is almost spring in Queensland, is this normal.

    • @BeekeepingMadeSimple
      @BeekeepingMadeSimple  9 місяців тому

      Interesting! I have heard that pollen can go moldy before the bees even bring it into the hive. That's one reason why harvesting pollen is really hard to here, especially here in HI where it's so humid. My guess would eb that there's something wrong with it.

    Third-year beekeeper I was told brood dies above 92, and then someone said 97max, you found a study that said 106 for half a day's ok? We're going to have 103 for three days straight here in Iowa. Are you on Maui? Will Lahainans need any contracting help this fall and winter or are they wanting people to stay away?

    • @BeekeepingMadeSimple

      The mighty mite heat treatment to kill varroa heats the hive to 106F and it's in the hive for hours, so that's what I'm going with. I am on the big island. My husband looked into helping because he is an electrician but at the moment they're just helping people find homes. In a few months organizations like habitat for humanity might start doing some work. They build a crazy amount of homes in a short period of time. My husband helped with a few projects years ago here.
