- Here's how much money we made on our small farm in 2020. I've built a few spreadsheets and it calculates our farm profits down to the penny. It's not easy being profitable on a small farm, but somehow we have made money farming.

@@traviswinklevoss5431 The US government insures all crops against weather damage to encourage the growing of more fragile crops and not risk the whole farm. It is called the FCIC. It was created during the Dust Bowl where farmers went completely bankrupt due to repeated crop failures. All farmers combined claimed roughly 1.7 billion dollars in insurance each year equaling to 50% of the harvest at 60% of the price.

Raid Shadow Legends
Just yesterday I saw a video of a German farmer who sold "shares" of cattle. The consumer would buy 1/2 a side of cattle up front and then get the meat from their cow cut to their specifications at slaughter time. There was another German farm that specialized as a "retirement" home of older animals (cows and pigs mainly) and each animal would be set up by a type of patreon system for their upkeep until they died of natural age. So your idea of sponsorship isn't really that far off.

he's got a great approach in everything he does, particularly scaling sustainable farming. I think a program for farming like this in combination with UBI would be smart--pay ppl to be ethical and good shit will follow
@@CBielski87 he does have a great approach. Ubi doesn’t work, welfare doesn’t work, SS doesn’t provide a sustainable quality of life unless poverty is where you want to be. Productivity, efficiency, and getting off your ass working is the way to go, not ubi. Ubi doesn’t work where they use it, the USA will not be apart of this b.s. great reset

PS, we had better figure out an economic system that doesn’t completely collapse when there is a pandemic….you dislike the idea of UBI, but I don’t see any other suggestions from you that don’t depend upon the condition of the local economy, and most workers cannot affect the condition of their local economy, nor can they afford to leave and find another locale. Perhaps hard work will help, though not always. There are always folks willing to take advantage of a hard worker, then not reward them adequately. People should be ethical because they can see that society works better that way. Bribing them to behave better sounds like an invitation to game the system, but it doesn’t address the basic problems, a big one of which is that job openings don’t automatically appear where there are workers needing jobs. Your system will punish workers for this problem. Paying someone to be ethical does not counteract the lack of jobs where they are needed, nor does it encourage employers to be more ethical.
Maybe not a ton of money now but the learning and growing has a value that money just can't touch ,you have a great life ta boot !

I agree with Cindy Green. I am about to buy a very small homestead but it is in the town limits and they have a lot of restrictions on animals and noise. I am trying to find ways to have it pay for itself. When my Husband died, I had a mortgage company steal my dream home with a death clause in the fine print. So I have been paying cash for every house since then. This homestead is the first mortgage I even considered getting and it is only because I have spent 52 years looking for this particular house and property. I want to pay off the mortgage within 5 years and make repairs and improvements
I spent all day and night trying to find out what my income per acre and outflow would be for raising various animals and it was really hard to be realistic without knowing what my actual sales will be. This video has helped to clarify things a lot. Thank you so much, and I would be interested in buying a few chestnut saplings from you if you could ship them to West Virginia. Also I would love to buy a Release the Quackens sweat shirt or hoodie in size 3X-4X. I like to layer up in winter.
One last question, when I hit “skip ads”, do you make less money? Please let us know how that works. I have grown very fond of you two and all of the birds and animals. I want to help y’all succeed.
@@tommielourogers4327 I would look into pigs if your zone allows it. A lot of farmer's say it can be very profitable, especially if you're able to source food scraps from town restaurants and bakeries. Check local market for pork proces though some places have a lot of supply so price is weak.

The growth of the farm has been amazing to see. I kinda figured the income wouldn't be super huge since you have spoken about the "day job" of remote work and the work your wife does. Still, seeing you grow the farm over the last year and a half has been great. I'm glad you are learning to stay realistic and humble.
I think its valuable to show that everything has humble beginnings. When people find the farm ten years from now and wonder how Gold-Shaw-Farm™ became this world wide multimedia sensation with its own video game, anthem, theme park and five foot omega-duck breed, they will find this explanation and know.

I'm in central North Carolina. I'm no longer on the farm I grew up on, and in fact that place is no longer in our family due to a difficult divorce but that life became so much a part of me that after twenty four years I often still dream about being there again as if I never left.
We had roughly 500 archers, about 65 percent in cultivation and our two main crops were tobacco and soy beans but we also grew sweet potatoes and sweet corn.
My ex wife worked for the NCDA as a row crop scientist and I worked as an ornamental iron worker (professional black smith) with my shop on the farm. Even with three rental houses, two outside incomes and several other side hustles there were never enough hours in the day and at the end of the month when we paid our bills it was usually a squeaker. Part of the problem was that by the time we took the place over the equipment that my Dad inherited and repeatedly cobbled back together was so obsolete and worn out that, despite my being a better then fair mechanic we had to replace the majority of the equipment which meant we had notes on nearly everything. We were in the soil conservation program due to some long standing erosion problems, and while we got the tax deferment we couldn't sell what we grew on that portion of our land. The place was fallow for a number of years after my father couldn't manage it anymore (he had a pretty sevier heart condition) so there were a lot of leaky roofs and sagging doors out there and it took several years to get all that under control.
None of it was easy. There was always a feeling of being just a little behind on nearly everything and the bills kept rolling in, even in the winter while not much was going on.
It might have been my perception, but farming was a high stress occupation for me but I loved it and when it was going relatively smoothly there couldn't be anything better but in my way of thinking and from what I see in the news these days it's getting harder all the time. It's hard to compete with the corporations, bad weather, rising taxes, rising insurance and fuel costs and sometimes I thought if we were bigger or smaller it would have been easier to make it.
Now I'm 65 and I'm about worn out but I'd return to that time in my life in a minute if I could, hard as it sometimes was because there's nothing like standing in your kitchen washing the dishes and looking out the window and seeing all that going on out there. Calling your own shots is awesome when it's working.
I like what you're doing. Vermont seems like a harsh environment with long winters, but that might be because I'm from the south. Fruit trees are a lot of work, what with pruning, thinning the blossoms, propping up the limbs and picking but I think you're onto something. I often thought about permaculture and being as diverse and small as you are if you don't have a great year in one area you can still survive. We kept chickens and hogs and occasionally sold a hog or some eggs but that wasn't our focus. We ate our chickens and hogs and only kept as many as we could use ... usually. I wish, like you we had done more with the animals. I always enjoyed hanging around with them. My biggest concern was that it would become too time consuming. I'll probably never know now. It is nice to watch you interact with them all. The videos are a great idea. They're very entertaining. You'll figure it out. There's always something to learn, new ways to do things more efficiently to maximize profits. I think you're doing a great job for the length of time you're at it.
My only advice might be to have a boodle of kids. They cut labor costs and they're usually more fun then ducks and chickens and I'd have a close relationship with my extension agent. They can be a great help.

Honestly if one day I can go to a store and find gold shaw farm eggs as other products for sale in other places like whole foods or sprouts, I would be so happy and totally would buy some this is just such a wholesome farm :)

I'm no business major but lets not forget the amount of food you grow for personal consumption. That helps reduce overall grocery expenses. I'm amazed that you took the time to share your income with the community, I really respect that. I agree that you should be super proud of the leap from 2019's income to 2020, congratulations your hard work is paying off. And while you're thankful for the community for supporting you throughout this journey, its really your Charisma and the quality of your videos that I feel has kept my interested and supportive, so keep it up. He has to be making far more money from UA-cam than from role playing as a farmer. The estimated earnings are from 700 to 12,000 per 30 days.
I thought farming was collecting eggs and constantly building some major project that is subsidized or sponsored and just raising things for fun and own personal consumption. That's what I see on other homesteading channels, just a bunch of youngsters wearing dungarees with new trucks, new buildings, new cars, land expansions and the like. You actually have a plan for productivity and new business with saplings (which I totally support). Your channel is very real and a pleasure to watch. Cheers

My country finally got snow after two years, i'm sooooo happy!
Oh man, my dads uncle used to raise cattle in Puerto Rico, specially for veal. I remember it being very labor intensive, but he had a great system that allowed him to be very profitable. It had something to do with how he would feed them (among a bunch of other things I bet). I was kinda young when he passed away, so I don't quite remember what was the trick. He wanted to pass on the knowledge to my dad, but pops had no interest in it. Man, I wish I could have learned from him. He had an awesome life and I have never met a happier man. I dont know what it is, but I've never met a farmer that was not happy, even if was a hard life full of struggles. Your disposition reminds me of Uncle Jaime, he was awesome and so are you.

I still argue that these videos are also a farm product! Maybe not in a conventional sense, but like, while some farms offer tours and family activities, etc., you offer youtube videos. I love that so many farmers and homesteaders are using UA-cam to make their farms more fiscally sustainable.

There are several channels I follow (homestead, tiny homes, refurbishing a sailboat, video podcasts) that have 400-500 members with monthly revenues of $2,000-$3,500. Post the same or similar content to Patreon that you do to instagram, for example, to increase membership. Release videos on Patreon a day or two before they are available directly on UA-cam.
NOTE: Most Patreon videos that employ UA-cam have pop-up banner ads when viewed via Patreon so you would still have some ad income without the irritation of video ad interruptions. And yes, I do allow most ads to play on mute while I do something else.

When you begin to purchase cattle, look into getting an ABCA registered border collie! They're a great multi-purpose herding dog, and can also be used to herd geese, ducks and chickens!

Morgan, I just want to say, you have become our family's favorite TV show, and something we all watch together. I throw it on the big screen, along with your cool tiktok videos, and my kids just love it, and my wife loves the family together time. Because of you, my kids are involved with a friends farm down the road, taking care of some of the animals and helping baby animals grow up, even though I never spent one day on a farm as a child. (we are lucky to have no covid in our area). You have made my kids better, more environmentally knowledgeable human beings. I thank you for that. When we first had our chickens my husband made a spreadsheet for me (well, that lasted a year!) but we managed to get the eggs down to 95 pence each! But you are getting your tractors sorted and the housing, so some of that won't come into the equation next year. Always an interesting exercise for a small scale person, but you need to keep those records as it is so important for a business. Good video, thank you.

Thanks for the video, it is very important to address the financial aspect of a sustainable farm, more so with so many people looking at your project, it is a reality check for the ones who may choose in future to go in the same path.
One things thats should be pointed out, s that a farm actually provides also food for the farmer, that food at the end of the month is an income in form of goods.
I am from Italy (in fact excuse my english) from a big city (Rome), but my family come from the countryside, everyone who can in that area have a small farm (some chickens, ducks, rabbit, vegetal garden etc) cause the impact of the goods you produce at the end of the month is important.

Love the videos you’ve created becoz your farm really reminds me a lot of my grandma’s house in the countryside, she kept a lot of chickens and ducks in the backyard, when I was a kid I used to go to her house everyday after school. Also, my 1st pet was a chicken.

It does snow here, maybe not Downtown LA, but Big Bear, Mammoth, higher altitudes get snow. You just gotta drive a few hours. My family spends every New Year in Big Bear because of the Snow. We rent a house or cabin, last year was great, just wait for the rains to start. When it rains down here it snows up there.

I would think that he makes good money on goose meat at Christmas time. Would love to see the sales for December. Remember in the Book/Movie, "A Christmas Carole" by Charles Dickens, it was a BIG DEAL to eat a prized goose for Christmas! I wonder if the meat is "gamey", whatever that means.

I really love videos I don’t farm I live in Nevada where it’s dry and no trees and grass and when I watch you work your phone and see it with the animals and how lush your farm is it makes me happy! Congrats on the successful year. It looks like you got some exponential growth going on there. I lost my job about two years ago but was fortunate in that I can get by on my investment income. I looked into getting another job, but at my age that was tough. I was skeptical when a friend asked me to help him with his vegetable farm. Didn't have anything else to do, so I gave it a try. Now, I get all the fresh air, exercise, and conversation I want, and I get a box of fresh vegetables to take home. My wife goes wild giving and sending the surplus vegetables to needy friends and family. Everyone is profusely thanking me. So I may not be making a penny from farming but it sure has paid rich dividends.

Well, good job! The biggest hurdle will be "upscaling" the business, because you are going to hit a limit when you need to hire a new person to help you. Finding good "employees" is never easy!

G.S. Farms, might " Consider " Geodesic Dome " Buildings ! They are Quite Strong, And if built right can withstand " Strong Storms " ! And When properly Insulated [ Please Don't use fiber-glass insulation, it's inferior ] ( Use Non Toxic Foams ), what it would cost to heat a 1200 sq. ft. house ( say $ 1400 a year ) would cost less then $ 50.00, in a Geodesic dome ! And Yes They work
