    ah what a good video,
    but remember....
    The Dao that can be told
    is not the eternal Dao

      Haha! I could never forget!
      道可道,非常道
      In line with what Thich Nhat Hanh said, "A finger pointing at the moon is not the moon. The finger is needed to know where to look for the moon, but if you mistake the finger for the moon itself, you will never know the real moon." A finger pointing at the moon is the best that words can do.

      Ian Withy-Berry wow, how have i never heard this before? Truly amazing. Puts the situation completely correctly. Except for maybe 1 part. Even if you dont mistake the finger for the moon, you still will not know the real moon. Its impossible. Perhaps you might get close to it and reach theosis. But no further than that.

    A very informative and well-balanced video. It's sometimes difficult to find a reliable historical overview of the tradition that isn't infected by Westernized, modernist interpretations.

      Thanks! Although, I actually think touching on that issue is one thing I should have done more with in this video. Every other video I've seen addressing "Daoism" treats it as little more (if anything more) than the Daodejing and Zhuangzi. But the term, the field, and Daoism itself is so much more complex than that. Hopefully this video shows some proof for that, but I think it needs to be stressed even more.

    interesting to read in some modern accounts that the ingestion of life extending elixers to promote immortality could often lead to euphoria, weight loss and increased libido then to earlier death (mercury and arsenic being the componenets perhaps) but then the same elixers could be seen to delay decay which could have led daoists priests to believe the emporers or others lived on in a kind of ritual immortality. Some incorruptable christian saints have also led beleivers of the time to beleive the same.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_alchemical_elixir_poisoning

      @@IanWithyBerry Thank you for the link. I did want to take notes because your information was interesting. Not to be overly critical but the graphics went by quite quickly as well. I look forward to more of your lectures, they are quite informative.

    interesting to see that the traditional culture already was being repressed before the cultural revolution

    It’s just a traditional and cultural practice/event to me. In comparison to other religions, Chinese religion is more of a service provider for supernatural/spiritual related issues. Feeling lost? Need advice? Go get a divination. Feeling unlucky? Go get a blessing. Feel haunted? Go get a exorcism rituals done. Feeling thankful? Go make a prayer. It’s irrelevant if it works, it’s just for a peace of mind. Most Chinese are pragmatic but there are times when things get tough and are beyond individual efforts, we turn to faith.

    Why do some say lao tzu and others laozi?

    • @IanWithyBerry
      @IanWithyBerry  3 роки тому +2

      They are two different ways of putting the same Chinese characters into the Latin alphabet! The characters are 老子. Wade-Giles romanizes it as “Lao” and “Tzu” and Hanyu Pinyin romanizes it as “Lao” and “Zi.” (These are without their tonal/diacritic marks.) Wade-Giles has been popular since the beginning of the 20th century while Pinyin was created in the 1960s by the PRC and has become globally recognized. In both cases it is pronounced the same though. Hope that helps!

      @Peter Livingstone If we take "Taoism" to indicate the organized religious tradition with its lineages, teachings, and practices, then I'm not. There are a lot of other ways that people conceive of "Taoism" (under the most lenient of them, everyone is a Taoist), but I think I'm of the mind to returning the label to the living religious tradition. In a sense, I think I'd like to consider myself Zhuangzian of sorts, but the Zhuangzi isn't quite the text you can be an adherent to. As for religion and faith, I'd probably have to work out their precise meanings before I could say whether or not I have either. But, in terms of church affiliation, subscribing to any particular faith, or much of this kind, I can't say I have/am any of these things. Maybe "agnostic" would be a descriptive term but I'm unsure.

      @kj In the strictest-and in my opinion, most accurate-definition of Daoism (as the tradition identified in this video), I am not. I'd might like to think of myself as Zhuangzian, but I think there's something a bit contradictory to doing that. As for faith and religion, I'd have to make a definition for those before really giving a definitive answer (I'll admit, quite the philosophical answer). However, I don't have any institutional affiliation and I'd imagine I might fit statistically best into a group labeled "non-religious" or something of the sort. Hope that answers it!
