Sorry to be offtopic but does anybody know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot the password. I would love any tricks you can give me.
I really like this list! So many classics! A couple of my favorites from decades gone by: Polo (70’s), Drakkar Noir (80’s), Dolce & Gabbana Pour Homme and Ck Eternity (90’s).
Just found this by trawling through your videos. You've become my most trusted reviewer along with Chris from FragMental. I have 75% of these picks and love the older style classics. Chanel PM, Egoiste, Guerlain's Heritage, HR and vetiver, Creed BDP and ADP Essenza are Staples. Lalique PH is a great affordable signature scent too. Thank you for doing all the homework so we can enjoy.
Would love to hear your views on the Eau Sauvage flankers (Extreme and Parfum) pre and post their recent reformulation. Must admit I have a vested interest in this, as I have the 2010 Extreme and 2015 Parfum, and wondering how they compare to their contemporary versions
Égoiste is my all time favorite, would be great if your next fragrance would go into that direction. There isnt really anything like it out there. I guess the closest would be Trumpers Sandalwood...
From the eighties you have to put in Drakkar noir...it was king! It's smells fresh and unique...so much that candles and air fresheners imitate it. It was ahead of its time and still gets lots of compliments
My father gave me what was left of his original Monsieur de Givenchy in the fat bottle and black cap, but I only came to appreciate it in the last 3 years. Magical the vintage juice is. Haven't tried the new version, but I've heard that it's lost some of its lustre. Nailed the value on those Guerlains too. Habit Rouge edt still has one of the longest lasting lemon notes I've ever encountered in a designer fragrance to date. 🍋🍋🍋
A rather naive question, I'm afraid. Why do perfume houses reformulate classic fragrances periodically? Is it simply because ingredient availability/price changes or is it something more?
I know one of the reasons is certain ingredients were banned. Over the years they've become more and more restrictive on what they deam safe or environmentally friendly. Overtime, many of the fragrances as we knew them in their original structure had to be changed.
@@chrisfairbarn9908 Many thanks, Mr Fairbarn. I suppose some of the ingredients (e.g., ambergris) are now either too costly or prohibited for conservation reasons. As you say, some other (synthetic) fixatives, etc., might have been found to be hazardous.
Great review Dan, happy you have hit your kick starter target will buy on release. Hope can you do your version on chanel pour monsieur with fantastic performance x
Late late to acknowlege the great choices and presentation. Still have to smell the Givenchies and orig Dior Homme. Would add Envy for 90s - 2000. Also really like patreon recognized Armani Eau PH. And I'll shout out for Dunhill Icon. Excited to be pulling trigger on AdP Essenza soon. Cheers.
Your collection in this video is a real class! Even though I don't own every single one of them, I know most and they're brilliant. However, it's not a Mr. Smelly's video without the trademark gunshot sprays. Where have they gone? lol.
Acqua Di Parma Essenza smells great, man. I got a decant and I enjoyed it, but it didn't last long on me as I was expecting. Hopefully they will create an eau de parfum version.
Interesting vid. I thought i would be bored, as im not really into classic/vintage frags (apart from Fahrenheit, which is my all time fave frag), but i found myslef curious to know what many of these smelled like :)
'Anyone recall "Phileas" by Nina Ricci, a short-lived fragrance from the early 1980s? It was my first 'serious' eau de toilette and I was very surprised when it was discontined. (The nearest thing I've been able to find since is "Yatagan" by Caron - itself a great, quite unusual fragrance.) "Green Irish Tweed" is another of my favourites.
Would agree for the most part but I would have put cool water instead of Fahrenheit and Paco rabanne Pour Homme instead of Givenchy gentlemen. Possibly another one instead of acqua di Parma Colonia essenza
Would you say that Azzaro pour Homme is similar to Floris no 89? Cuz I remember that one being soapy and the girl working there said it's "barbershop" ish
Great video and I enjoyed it and you should do more of these videos I have Dior homme reformation and it's my 10 out of ten and I like Dior Fahrenheit and Jean Paul gauliter la male and chanel egististe and I'm going to try the other fragrances and have a blessed night
Fantastic choices. My personal favorites are Chanel Egoiste and Monsieur de Givenchy. If anyone loves those two I mentioned please, please, please do your best to acquire the Concentree version of Egoiste and the Haute Concentration version of Monsieur de Givenchy....sublime depth and richness of the edt versions. Absolute olfactory Nirvana.
I recently decided I wanted to have some old favorites back in my collection, and the newest formulation of Kouros is definitely toned down. But fear not, it is still plenty powerful so no need to track down vintage bottles unless you're some kind of maniac. Incidentally, it's one of those fragrances I love though I've never once gotten a compliment on it from a member of the female sex.
Oh come on Mr. Smelly. I've watched your videos for years and I can recall that you aren't that crazy about Azzaro, but you sure do like Polo (green). I'm quite surprised that it didn't make your list.
great review for me .older guy.dan..had some of these 70s 80s.my dads fav was givinchy.f getelman.class in a glass..i had kouros...paca rabane..my fav later on was channel.for men..stillgot a full bottle.went through about 6.every niw and then a xmas .i would get a bottle .out of frazers..(big dept.store in glasgow..)..keep the good work up ..will buy hour frag when its out ...take care..
My 2 favorites from 2010's are Parfum de Marly Carlisle and Zaharoff Signature Pour Homme. I am not sure when fragrances were realeased, but I know I would rank Fahrenheit as number one for it's decade. I was my go to somewhere around 1990 until 2000.
Great video Dan. Enjoyed this, quite a few scents from memory lane. I've been wearing Prada Luna Rossa Black today - a great replacement for Midnight in Paris. A bit "brighter" and more peppery in the opening but great performance and the dry down is, for me, sublime. Still have my original Midnight as well - but I'm a bit precious about that LOL. Still have a bit of Givenchy Gentleman come to that. Doh!
Dior es 1964 must be on list , we shall see with baited breath . Yes it is ! 1966 though, my mistake. My dads signature from the early 80s great stuff. HR though , rose note doesn’t work for me, try as I might. For mid late 80s armarni pour homme amongst a sea of kouros
@@MrSmelly1977 You thought about including it but you didn't! I fail, wrong on your part! An indispensable 1998 that can not be missing in the analogy of perfumery! He scored a before one later as he did opium pour homme de ysl!
U can't be serious about performance on the Reformulations on most all on this list? Note to the newbie: don't fall into this trap! If you want any of the frags here you better buy a vintage of them or not at all. Otherwise, prepare for a huge disappointment and a growing collection of useless, watered down bottles you'll never use (apart from as a bathroom spray perhaps). Imo every serious reviewer should make a very clear distinction between original/vintage and - mostly useless- Reformulations.
Best? subjective...popularity? the 80s were all about calvin klein, obsession and eternity, drakkar and fahrenheit were masterpieces. 90s is aqua di gio, cool water, and ck1. Great video mate. Just to ask or even for a future video, is there money to be made by buying fragrances and keeping them predicting they will be sold out or reformulated and then to sell them on years later for a profit??
I agree with Dan here. There can be exceptions with frags that are raved about and then discontinued (Midnight in Paris being a good example) but they are the exception rather than the rule. Also they need to be stored carefully and hopefully last. I have some bottles that are 1980's vintage and some of them smell ok for about 3 minutes now. There are, indeed, more worthwhile investments.
@@Mouxbar you make a good point and midnight in Paris was example I would be making myself. Valentino uomo has been sold out only recently and discontinued . I was thinking of going to buy a few to store away. Also the new issey miyake pulse of the night
Uomo discontinued, sad news :-( A great frag which may be a possible target. Is it different enough from Dior Homme to attract a premium though? I don't know LOL. I guess the worse thing that can happen is you pick up a few bottles, the demand doesn't materialise and you end up with a few years of personal Uomo supply.
