    6:25 hey Tim, auto technician here. not sure if you’ve already considered this, but I think your brakes overheated and faded out due to boiling brake fluid. When the fluids boils it can’t do hydraulic stuff anymore and your pedal goes to the floor. Once it cools, braking returns. Might want to flush your brake system to get all the old fluid out because brake fluid is hygroscopic (attracts moisture) and old fluid usually has moisture in it and thus is more at risk of boiling. Just my first thought. Be careful not to ride your brakes on long descents to keep them cool. Cheers brother 🇺🇸

    I used to be a transmission rebuiler. Your truck has an E4OD/4R100 trans. The OD light indicates a code most commonly a converter clutch issue. Basically when the light flashes it turns off converter lockup and it will go to default line pressure and you may feel firmer shifts. Best solution is pull codes but you should be ok and won't do any damage. It could also be sharing a ground with the brake system and maybe you have a crusty ground.

    • @boredom.victim
      @boredom.victim День тому +7

      @greggamandabarkus4235 my first thought was a bad ground too, the lockup disengaging on a steep downgrade is a nice safety feature also, for the safety of the engine 👍

      yeah, I was going to say the same . a tip I heard some 40 years ago is: when the brakes go out (like you can push the pedal to the floor), you have to pump that pedal . ...maybe?

    • @operator0
      @operator0 День тому +4

      He had the brake pedal all the way to the floor. If there's no vacuum pressure the brake pedal will be really stiff. My guess is that he boiled the brake fluid, which makes sense. That fluid has probably never been flushed since the truck was new, and he was going down a steep hill. This seems to be confirmed by the fact that the pedal was spongy after the initial incident, which will be the case after you boil brake fluid and until you flush it all out.
      Anyway, I would start there. It's cheap and easy to do, and if it doesn't work you aren't out much.

    • @Rayden440
      @Rayden440 День тому

      @@operator0 I agree, this wont be caused by a bad vacuum pump. If the pump goes bad you lose the power assist, meaning the brake pedal goes hard. I think it could be an internal leak in the master cylinder. There wouldn't be any sign of fluid leaks, but there will be no hydraulic pressure due to broken seal

    Re all the "advice" to get a newer rig: All newer Diesels require DEF and regeneration cycles. Any failures out in the boonies, and the truck WILL go into "limp mode", and limit top speed to 5 or 10 MPH, or will only idle, or will not start if you shut it off. Or the DEF will freeze if/when the DEF tank heater fails. Then you simply call a tow truck and pay for a tow to the nearest dealer. Nothing to it when you're miles from a highway, right?

    Flashing OD light could be trans fluid over pressure or high temp, or a faulty Vehicle Speed Sensor. The vehicle randomly shutting off could be your Cam Position Sensor, which is a known issue for the 7.3L.
    Upgrades to consider in the future:
    - Hydroboost brake conversion
    - 4-wheel disc conversion (basically just adding rear discs)
    - 38 gallon rear tank conversion

    That last hill you coasted into Whistler is called Suicide Hill. Named after the many logging truck drivers killed there. Probably better you didn't know that before charging down there.

    so boiling the breaks on the 7.3 ford f250sd and f350sd is a common issue as well. a break system upgrade might be in order. bleeding the breaks will help as when they boil air pockets form.

    There is something to be said about knowing one's vehicle so intimately. Newer rides have their share of issues, most of which cannot be easily remedied by "backyard mechanics." That truck is iconic. It is your trademark. Metal is built to last. Drive on.

    Need a Chilton manual for the truck in the storage space man. Thank God for runaway lanes. My husband has used them many times hauling steal down mountains in an 18-wheeler with a flatbed. When at home he always drove nothing but his 84 Ford 150 short bed.

    OD light flashing is typically a transmission issue or electrical issue. The brake issue maybe related if it's a harness problem. Goodluck with it Timmy!

    Oh no! Losing brakes is nothing to joke about! Glad you made it down the pass okay. Loved the mountain bike ride over the granite slab. I used to mountain bike in my younger days and would like to do some easy trail riding near home. Tire easily since having cancer treatments 4 years ago. Been in remission for 3.

    He said his brakes were going to the floor. Bad master cylinder if it wasn't leaking anywhere. If it has drums on the back they could be excessively worn.

    Brake boosters are vacuum assisted off the engine vacuum. If the brake booster goes bad (likely the diaphragm cracked or broke) you now have manual brakes, which is harder to stop with.
    Flashing overdrive means something’s wrong with the transmission, could you have been overheating it? How’s your transmission cooler on old 7.3 pig?

    • @tufgriz8917
      @tufgriz8917 6 годин тому

      it's a diesel engine, they don't create vacuum so there is no vacuum booster. They use a hydro booster ran by the power steering pump
