You don't know. Animals, humans included can sometimes just "turn" on their young, rejecting or even killing them and not lose a minute of sleep over it.
As a woman myself, I agree with Jeremy on this... yes, it may have been hard to have to leave the baby behind, but his falls due to his deficiency could have endangered the entire herd... her parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins... she can breed again and have a healthier foal next year so turning on this one wouldn't have been so hard for her... I might even go on a limb to say the herd abandoned it near the human ranch because they probably knew it was the foals best chance of a life

So adorable. He’s pawing when he drinks from the bucket like he would with his mom. He equates that milk with his mom. Low selenium considering his start in life is not unusual and an easy fix. So wonderful these people rescued him.Couldn’t wish for anyone better.
We adopted a Shetland pony from my sisters friend because she wasn't able to care for him properly. We had a large Chevy van and put him inside. He rode the whole way home looking over my shoulder while I drove. He was very interested in everything outside the van, just like a dog. Lol Several people almost busted their necks doing triple takes at stop lights after they spotted him, they kept having to look again to see that, yes, it was a pony standing with his head over my shoulder and not a large dog. 😂😂😂
That's why the herd left him behind ,they are flight animals and he couldn't come along. So glad you found him and give him a good home, but he needs a surrogate mum to learn him the horse things that are important for him. Thank you for sharing and rescuing this beautiful foal
Hard to believe Ranger was so scared of you at first. He sure got over it in a hurry! A rascal from the very beginning! I love watching him give you milky kisses. I'd forgotten what an adorable baby he was!
Foals are so adorable- this little one more than most, so lucky, both you and him. Do you believe the selenium deficiency could be a reason he got left behind, if he was too tired to keep up?
that's probably the case... horses (or most wild animals in general) tend to leave their young behind if they are sick and don't think they'll be able to keep up. since selenium deficiency can cause weakness and fatigue, that little guy probably couldn't keep up with the herd.
Watched both rescue videos, and since I couldn't leave a comment on the other I just came here to say that Jordan's horsemanship is really amazing, the timing of pressure and release he had while gaining trust with that foal was like poetry
