I cant believe I never saw this masterpiece of an edit almost 15 years later! This should be in the panthon of legendary anime edits, especially for 2010!! There is no video essay in the world that could express the passion for the medium and the impact of Daicon IV more than this video. This might a few years too late for you to see but thank you so much for making this. Im sure Hideaki Anno, Hiroyuki Yamaga and Takami Akai would all be proud.
This works very well in keeping the spirit of the original. Especially liked the ending...seems kind of fitting (and sad) hearing, "I only meant to stay a while" while seeing a montage of all the awesome series and realizing that Gainax is pretty much gone at this point. Thanks for this
Well, there is a time for something and there is the time when it has to desolve into more fruitful new ways. Like our computer chips and transistors were invented by Fairchild Semiconductors, but then passed on to all the IT companies we know today.
I know its been ten years, but I still really like the editing. It has a lot lot lot of heart, and thats something that I think is extremely valuable. I really like this edit, its so good
The amount of details in it is pretty insane. Everything has a cool little touch to it, like the stars having Anno's face from Return of Ultraman that you only see for a split second or two cameos from Love & Pop.
I just found this video and I have to say that this is a very awesome and appropriate tribute to Gainax and very honorable to the original DAICON video that started it all. Without Gainax I do not think I would ever be into anime. Thanks for the great video
Took me a long time to notice this existed, but got to say "great job". I recall being blown away by the Diacon IV opening vid (thanks to my brother) sometime in the mid 80s... Back in the day when we were doing AMVs with two VCRs and a stereo. Anyways, fitting tribute IMO.
When this came out in 2010 Evangelion was around 15 years old, and nearly 15 years later I stumble on this nostalgic passion project AMV. Let's cherish the time we have and live in the present as though reminiscing on a great memory. :)
As a self-proclaimed Gainax fanboy, I'm ashamed that I've only just found this amazing tribute. Props to you for your amazing talent, and for sharing this with the world.
The Daicon IV intro animation is still great, in my opinion. There's a coarse beauty to hand-drawn animation that digital animation can't (at least to my knowledge) reproduce. I love the rough texture of the shading and the way things like the joints of mecha limbs move. It's like watching a moving picture instead of a game cutscene. I only recently discovered that work, but it makes me want to sit down and watch Gainax's entire library.
Holy fucking dicks, I'm actually legitimately physically crying this is so good dude. I remember watching this after I had only seen EVA and Daicon, and I thought it was awesome, but now that I've seen Gunbuster, Nadia, Diebuster, FLCL, Gurren Lagann, Kare Kano, and Re Cutie Honey, it's even more impressive.
I spent most my life having only seen Eva, and after actually forcing myself to finally watch the rest of the library made by Gainax in the last 2 years, I don’t hold Eva so highly anymore. Everything else is sooooo good.
This is the best AMV. I wonder how many of the 15,000 viewers have seen enough Gainax stuff to know how well everything is edited. The Amarao vs Natsuko part was my favorite, someone who hadn't seen the shows would think that was just a clip from one of them.
That I'm sitting here feeling joy at seeing favorite Gainax characters flash by reminds me so much of how I felt seeing the Daikon IV intro the first time in the 90s at a Con.. Thank you!
Sweet! Considering the troubles Gainax seems to be going through financially and creatively, this is a fitting summation and coda to the animation studio "By fandom for fandom." I hope they aren't on the way out but the feud between them and Anno over the remaining two Eva films is a really bad omen. One of the neat things about this as well is that it shows just how deep and broad their output has been. And yeah: 505 views for this hardly seems fair. This should be a featured video.
@Gwern0 1. Yea, im missing some early stuff but If cant get it on DVD i'm not gonna use it, most of the time anyway. 2. Blast off? That would have been pretty spectacular, but I'm not skilled enough to pull it off. Hell, I was barely good enough to do this video as it is now. 3. It could have been worse, I could have more closely follow the original which has about 40 seconds of just black screen before you see the stars.
I still remember the last anime I watched. FLCL. Great times many years ago when days were shiny and careless.. Now all we have is covid. This makes me happy and sad.
It seems criminal that it only have 140 views. Truly a fantastic Gainax tribute. Well done indeed, sir. A far cry better then 99% of the other "windows movie maker" garbage videos out there.
@finalfantasy696969 Lets see- The building was ripped off from this tutorial at a great website to learn stuff about after effects, called Video Copilot. Rewind: I used Time remapping to reverse a clip of the video. I used an effect called "Write on" to make it look like it drew. And the stars turning into squares was me messing around in after effects. I wanted to do something else, but I liked how it looked so I kept it.
@enemyofbohemia They know/knew and you better believe they made _Densha Otoko_ pay through the nose when they wanted to license "Twilight" for their DAICON-tribute opening.
Absolutely beautifully composed tribute! I have been a fan of Gainax since I first discovered the original Daicon animations, Otaku No Video (on VHS, natch), Nadia, and so many others. Great work!
You know what I love about UA-cam? You can be watching random videos and just come across a song you've known for years but never knew the name for... Thank you very much for uploading this as I've been trying to find this song for almost ever!
Hard to imagine even after all their accomplishment Gainax still ended up going under, or rather people started leaving one after another until the studio was a mere empty shell of it's former self. How does that even happen?
Man I have been looking for this video since Anime Expo ended. I loved it so much, ELO is one of my favorite bands and Gainax is one of my favorite studios. Props man this is top notch stuff keep up the good work! ! !
Now that's a AMV. I love gainex Ink lines style. Cell shading currently has made anime to shiny and bright than the dark gory days of the 80s and early 90s.
I've seen a lot of AMVs for 9 years...and certain AMVs has brought some tears to my eyes......and this one did.......but they were tears of joy n_n. I usually enjoy amv's that collaborate more than one anime in one AMV. I voted this best of show at AX but u know the majority of votes usually goes for what anime is popular and the fans don't usually choose on artistic style. I never knew this amv was based on daicon 3 &4 which i did check up on that info. 2 me....best of show at AX 2010:)
When i saw this, i thought... Yea, this is gonna be bad. But after watching all of it? I gotta say, this was really well made. It might not have that nistalga factor, but it has the FEEL of the original. Well done. Well done. .
@ShinRanka Im not sure who it is, I imagine its someone who works at ( or worked at) gainax. It was taken from one of the later episodes of "His and Her Circumstances). Strangely enough, that particular face also appears in FLCL. Anno does appear in the video, but its very, very quick.

I know, right? As someone who watched majority of the stuff here (even the bad stuff), finding this afterwards felt like bliss.
Rest in peace gainax 😢

Another yearly rewatch of an old favorite AMV. Cheers.
I just found this video and I have to say that this is a very awesome and appropriate tribute to Gainax and very honorable to the original DAICON video that started it all. Without Gainax I do not think I would ever be into anime. Thanks for the great video
Thank you for watching :)
there gutsy origins are amazing . there legendary . maybe a crucial point in anime history .
My God, it's full of stars!
A Spaced Out Ditzy ...
Good reference

@@pikminjake eh, my opinion on EVA hasn't changed despite all the GAINAX stuff I sat through (even the bad ones).
This video needs to be a special feature on every Gainax DVD.
I still enjoy watching this AMV.
This is the greatest tribute to GAINAX ever, of all time.
Great homage & tribute to the original by updating it back in 2010. You did a job well done. Hope you've been successfully happy since that time.
My pick for best of Otakon. In the six years I've gone this is by far the best AMV I have seen.
I love this, Im sad I didnt watch this video 14 years ago, but here I am. Blessings.
This is the best AMV. I wonder how many of the 15,000 viewers have seen enough Gainax stuff to know how well everything is edited. The Amarao vs Natsuko part was my favorite, someone who hadn't seen the shows would think that was just a clip from one of them.
As I sit here, grinning like an idiot, I am reminded why being an otaku is so damn great. This is pure hope in AMV form.
13 years later and I am back here enjoying this lovely tribute to Gainax.
Only meant to stay a while... farewell GAINAX 🫡
Thanks for everything Gainax
That I'm sitting here feeling joy at seeing favorite Gainax characters flash by reminds me so much of how I felt seeing the Daikon IV intro the first time in the 90s at a Con.. Thank you!

"The lights in the sky are stars, where our Otaku cousins are waiting for us"
Damn it really shows the craft and creativity back then, its what's making me go back and watch older anime.. Its simply magic
I still remember the last anime I watched. FLCL. Great times many years ago when days were shiny and careless.. Now all we have is covid. This makes me happy and sad.

Esto demuestra que el video perfecto si existe.
Superb! It hits all of the Daicon and Gainax feels.
Yooooooo!!!!!!! How was this work of art not part of an opening ceremony to another DAICON.
This is awesome ...10 years later
flcl on top
Gainax, Khara, Trigger, we all is... Children of Daicon.
I truly loved this amv at Otakon last year for some reason I feel nostalgic and getkinda teary eyed everytime I watch this lol
I commented about this almost five years ago, and I'm still at awe over this homage/tribute. Still stands out as incredible.
absolutely brilliant and bursting with feels :o - only thing missing is that Daicon Animator Expo Tape episode :p
tape girl isn't gainax. it's khara. just like the rebuild of evangelion isn't gainax
My pick for best of show at AX. Absolutely fantastic tribute to Gainax and it's always great to hear that ELO song again. 5/5 A++
Now now, this is beutifull. It captures the spirit spectacullary. Thank you
@finalfantasy696969

Beautiful.
I love Gainax so much man. Legendary AMV.
As much a tribute to Daicon as a tribute to Otaku No Video, wonderful video
referencing Otakuland at the end is pretty amazing.
@Trilby425
The "Ride on Shooting Star" music video. Its on one of the FLCL DVDs. I forget which volume, probably volume 1.
Funny thing about this video, studio Trigger wasn't even born yet when this was release
I cried a bit.
Great work!
素晴らしい作品だと思います。楽しかったです。
Heh this is amazing. You really recreated the DAICON opening energy.
You know what I love about UA-cam? You can be watching random videos and just come across a song you've known for years but never knew the name for... Thank you very much for uploading this as I've been trying to find this song for almost ever!
Thank you very much for this. The days of my first-gen III and IV are gone but not forgotten.
daicon forever
Hard to imagine even after all their accomplishment Gainax still ended up going under, or rather people started leaving one after another until the studio was a mere empty shell of it's former self. How does that even happen?
They were never good at handling projects, somehow remaining as amateurs to the very end.
Man I have been looking for this video since Anime Expo ended. I loved it so much, ELO is one of my favorite bands and Gainax is one of my favorite studios. Props man this is top notch stuff keep up the good work! ! !
Golden Age of Gainax
this includes stuff from back when they were bad too, so I'd say this is just GAINAX in a nutshell.
what a tribute, thank you
Wonderful ~ wow we literally lived thru the ages with their accompaniment
I got actual chills from watching this... this was amazing!!!
absolute legend!
I think you just broke my fragile little mind.
I reject your reality and Substitute Gainax's.
You can also add characters created by GAINAX for their PC88/PC98 games (Dennou Gakuen etc)
Now that's a AMV. I love gainex Ink lines style. Cell shading currently has made anime to shiny and bright than the dark gory days of the 80s and early 90s.
@Kilocron Beauty that veers from the norm often goes overlooked, sad but true
beautiful ❤
happy 15th anniversary gurren lagann!!! :3
Thank you very much
ガイナックスの詰め合わせな感じが凄く良い!Σd(`・ω・´)

This is one of the most awesome AMVs, why haven't I seen it before!
Excellently done, A very nice tribute to Gainax. ;)
Nah, it's the second best thing ever, after the original Daicon IV video XD
@Carbine84
Thank you. =)
I don't even know what to say about this. This is just... Man...
@Kilocron If it makes you any better, this was shown at Manifest as 'one of the best AMV' pannel, and that's how I know of it
I normally can't stand 80's synth music but Gainax makes everything better. Great video!
Dude, this is awesome! And you’re awesome!
@Kilocron
lol. We all have to start somewhere.
Old pop culture have a feeling that new one don't have.
Oh man this is SOOO GOOD love it!!
I watched this one in the Expo, and good job, man!
Very nice. Saw it at Otakon and was impressed.
we salute to your cause
or I salute to your cause
I give you congrats on the creation to this video
Nicely paced, with great choice of clips. Well done!
Amazing work! Excellent editing! I love it! ^-^
god, i have goosebumps
Thank you, GunBuster.
When i saw this, i thought... Yea, this is gonna be bad.
But after watching all of it? I gotta say, this was really well made.
It might not have that nistalga factor, but it has the FEEL of the original.
Well done. Well done.
.
Man, you put some serious work into this...... Bravo!
Now that we're in 2020-- we need to make a new Daicon video with the Daicon children of 2011-2019
There's not much worth including, really. Could be cool, though.
Still epic to see, thank you.
12416 views as of this typing.
Genius becomes known, but often only with time.
@ShinRanka
Im not sure who it is, I imagine its someone who works at ( or worked at) gainax. It was taken from one of the later episodes of "His and Her Circumstances). Strangely enough, that particular face also appears in FLCL. Anno does appear in the video, but its very, very quick.
1:43 THE BEST PART
すごい!素晴らしいです。
A masterpiece.
Could someone please point me to where 2:44 is from?
おたくのビデオ(1991)OVA, Otaku no Video
this is brilliant, just fucking brilliant
YEAH XD daicon '90 years version
