When you build 5km long battleship with giant-ass laser cannon in the bow, powered by 50 ion capacitors and generators: Queue in Space Battleship Yamato firing Wave Motion Gun
Yes, it will make a tunnel out to as far as the range of the beam. I would not recommend the ion beam for tunneling though. It's hard to explain but the first time you try it you'll understand why. The laser is much better for tunneling
System could do with a 'trigger' block, so it redirects it like a combiner block but when triggered will come out at 90 degrees or something so you can actually charge up and fire it out of the loop without having to delete a block or use pistons/rotors
i mean, i see your point, but i also think its good as is, because right now, its a terrifyingly powerful weapon yes, but you need some knowledge to actually get it working, plus it can be used in all sorts of fun ways
Nice video, saw this mod on the Workshop and didn't subscribe because didn't understand how it worked, more interested now that you showed it's applications...
Ye the only thing is maybe another block like a 'Gate' where the beam can come out of and it does the same job as the blocks that redirect the laser but has the option to open a gate
Neat concept but it seems like a double-edged sword. After all, if a lucky hit were to destroy a redirecting block then the laser could just impale your own ship.
Yes, though as you can seei it is the single most complex largest and power intensive energy weapon on the workshop, one that not only need a purpose built craft, but also a great deal of care when in operation. Remember, if the loop is broken during charge, then the laser will most likely discharge inside your own vessel, and I do not fancy your chances of survival of that is the case.
@@mobiuscoreindustries you could perhaps have it very very deep in a planet underneath a base and use it as an anti large ship gun. It would be painful to build and maintain but it would be out of reach.
@@thenthson yep depends on what beaks and where. If it is the fire mechanisms then you may discharge a shot forward, if it is the generators then your shot will slowly lose power. But the worse is if the fire mechanism is broken in the loop, because this will cause the thing to fire form the breach. If it fires into a side close to the exterior then you may just take heavy damage, but if it goes INTO the ship then you look at catastrophic damage. This is why that weapon, as powerful as it is, is what I would consider a balanced energy weapon. You can't have it on at all times, only when you think you will need to fire it. It takes time to charge, and it needs engineering to make work. And finally, both for ions and lasers, they can be dangerous to use. Way different form the usual energy weapons which are very easy, low risk weapons to use. Even less risk than kinetic weapons that can damage your ship if they fire into you.
@@thenthson as for the base, this is how I would do such a thing. The power supply, generator chain and capacitors loop is just too big to armor around it. The building would be seen from high orbits and it's just impossible to protect the thing correctly without making building cost skyrocket. Voxels have counters, lasers being one of them but they can provide decent protection, reduction in visibility, and less chances of a deadly missfire. All my planetary bases are build underground, with only the hangar sticking out the side of the cliff I built it into. It takes some time but you can easily get yourself 1 or 2 km of ground to the center of your base without having to dig that much, being both far from the ground bellow, but also not accessible that easily from targets above.
Is there a way to release the beam without deleting a block or putting it on a rotor? Like a switch lock? Or does turning off a combiner let the beam pass through without redirecting?
So like a day after this mod came out I built the ION beam system....Man the amount of power this thing requires is FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR to much if you are playing survival. but at the same time its insanly op with its power and range even if you can only afford to fire it for 1 second you can rek anything from a very long ways away. I just hope the author updated the ION beam gens model to be small after I told him you cant place it in survival b/c its too big without a mod helping you place it.
if your having power Problems there is a mod that can fix that, The Steam workshop has something called an "Arc Reactor". pretty much solves every power problem ever
the Azimuth power pack is also really good to have with this mod. 4 of the big fusion reactors should be enough for 2 - 3 ion generators to work at full output.
For the Laser IDK. But for the Ion Bram... Short, Nope. And thats why: The charged Ion Beam allways makes Damage to Blocks that aren't fully constructed Ion Beam Combiners, wich means, thanks to the explosive damage, your Array blows up in exactly that moment, the Combiner gets Grinded to its last Construction Stage or the Projection becomes to the first Stage. Luckily Rotos get much more Stable. But if you prefere a Solid State System you best use a bunch of Laser Generators and bundle them to a nice Beam. Maybe this Mod will get some kind of Shutter or Selectable Output or something in this direction. The Creator announced a beam Splitter for each System and in the newest Version, the Laser System have also Capacitors so the creator is definitely not lazy since there was 4 Updates in the last Week alone.

Nah, you did NOT cover everything. How is it supposed to work in survival? Like, how do I remove the last piece of the loop safely?
I think you can use a piston that moves up and down to disconnect the loop to fire and then to reconnect and charge up. Set up some timers and have a laser gun shooting at some intervals :D
It doesn't matter if the laser is just hitting the edge of the block, shown in the video. So you can have the last one on a piston and just lower it to release it.
It would be safest if the piston moved in the same direction of the beam. That way the beam doesn't slide sideways and hit unintended blocks which may be housing the laser core room.
To get it to fire with pistons, you'll need 3 pistons & 4 combiner blocks! the 1st of the 4 combiner blocks is static(which is where you add the laser generators) which fires into the 2nd combiner block that is on a piston which moves only at most a quarter of a block which fires into the 3rd combiner block that moves in the same direction as the 2nd combiner block but a little more than half a block which fires into the 4th block which moves in the opposite direction of the other 2 pistons, which it fires back into the 1st combiner block! Which it should clear though a single block area but not hit anything that isn't suppose to be shot at!
a block that would really help this for charge up is a combiner that can flip between two emitters at the touch of a button. also the small laser will be a much more pratical ship to ship weapon while the ion beam would be better for anti station work (long range plus unmoving target)
i think it'd be possible to make the ion beam work for ship combat. most of the beam handling equipment would need to be deep within the ship and have the beam directed down a path to a turret that can fire it out in any diirection
@@killman369547 it's gonna be a bulky ship do to the need for the sheer size of the entire thing. As a bombardment weapon you can afford to just sit a few kilometers out as you trickle charge the capacitor.
@@JackRPG Actually I did find a way to somewhat controll it using your method with prism-on-piston along with prism-turret using 2 rotors for changing directions. It's so damn expensive to fire tho :P
could use a piston system to lower and raise the "loop" and make it fire that way... as i assume this will be ONLY on a VERY large ship that you have the space to do all this:)
I could see this like the Wave Motion Gun® in Star Blazers®, a powerful primary weapon that takes time to recharge to full potency each time it's fired.
There's a mod with the WMG already :) don't remember which, but you can see it in use in one of the last few w4stedslace uncooperative survival videos.
i did try that. when two combiners are facing eachother the good news is nothing explodes, but i have no idea whether that setup would be a valid charging loop, i'll have to test that specifically next, but the main thing is you don't have to worry about explosions if you have 2 combiners facing eachother.
He did show that off. if you're not in front of the final ejection of the beam, it simply occludes on your character model harmlessly. if you're in front of the final beam, however, you get hurt.
Ya just stick the block that is redirecting the beam from the fire direction into the loop on a piston and retract it to fire. Or have a 5th block you push into the beam to fire.
Yo couldn't you have a system for the Ion that has all of the systems on the turret, and for the firing mechanism just have a piston that's normally full extended, but retracts (and takes the holding directer with it) when you wanna fire?
The trouble is that you may end up with multiple combiners ejecting their charge depending on where each charge is at the time of lowering it. If you could make the previous combiner rotate to follow the one on the piston, you could still make sure all the power is being pumped into the one combiner as it lowered and thus fire from that lowered combiner only.
@@gaalidas4836 No, I meant for the combiner on the piston to work as a latch, the actual firing combiner for the then-charged beam would be the one that was facing the one on the piston. That way, the piston doesn't interfere with the position of the laser, only with the state, charging or firing.
Seems more like a fence than a firing solution. Having to take a block away that this fires also seems strange, you sure this won't work any other way?
This video is quite outdated. There are now blocks which can be set to fire in two different directions at different increments from 0 to 100%. This way you can make a turret work without removing blocks.
Death Star confirmed. I'm guessing that there is a group of modders out there trying to make it possible to blow up a planet on SE with a laser, and other scifi themes.
Why do you need 8 large reactors for the iron beam if large reactors can generate 10.5 megawatt? There are 1000 kilowatts in a megawatt so one large reactor is more than enough. Did the math, one large reactor can power 4,200 ion generators at once continuously.
you don't need to actually remove a loop block though, just put one of them on a piston to lower it out of the way to fire and raise it back up to recharge.
"combiner" Think you are missing the potential there... a combiner has 5 sides... so thats 5 sides it can accept energy from... and 1 output point. You set up 5 lasers pointing at 1 combiner... and set the output to another combiner... at that one which has 5 over combiners aimed at it... so thats 5x5 or 25 lasers... no need for fancy bouncing and such... oh no instead you just see 5 "bright beams" hitting the center block and boom.
There needs to be a better way to do that set up... Then again i am building possibly the largest ship in SE may need to make a giant murder laser mod though
This next mod involves deadly lasers, and how test subjects react when locked in a room with deadly lasers.

Now that we have the custom turret control, making a small laser turret with these should be easier :)
Fixed ion firing platform, use a piston to push the firing redirector into position, once fired, retract and start recharging.
Just use a piston that converts one block of the loop into a gate.
Before seeing this in action, i thought that capacitor could open up on the other end and fire from itself after charging up. oh well.
Neat concept but it seems like a double-edged sword. After all, if a lucky hit were to destroy a redirecting block then the laser could just impale your own ship.
This is going to be one of the most vanilla mods I’ve seen.
So at full charge an ion beam would basically just vaporize everything it touches.
@@mobiuscoreindustries yeah if that happens that ship is pretty much fubar isn't it?
Cool, now we can make laser beam puzzles for our scenarios!
One year on and it's still one of my favorite mods, even though i have to build vast ships or bases to house an ion cannon.
Is there a way to release the beam without deleting a block or putting it on a rotor? Like a switch lock? Or does turning off a combiner let the beam pass through without redirecting?
So homeworld is one of my Fav RTS games of all time, and the SOUND at 13:00 made my day and nerded SO HARD at it -downloads mod-
When you said that the beam gets redirected via the square block, I knew exactly where the idea came from. Portal 2
www.google.com/search?q=laser+puzzle+games
Sorry dude but they're WAAAAAAAAAY older than that ;)
Yeah, I thought it as well
So like a day after this mod came out I built the ION beam system....Man the amount of power this thing requires is FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR to much if you are playing survival. but at the same time its insanly op with its power and range even if you can only afford to fire it for 1 second you can rek anything from a very long ways away. I just hope the author updated the ION beam gens model to be small after I told him you cant place it in survival b/c its too big without a mod helping you place it.
With enough hinges, rotors, capacitors, beam generators, and beam directors, someone could build a functioning Death Star
if your having power Problems there is a mod that can fix that, The Steam workshop has something called an "Arc Reactor". pretty much solves every power problem ever
the Azimuth power pack is also really good to have with this mod. 4 of the big fusion reactors should be enough for 2 - 3 ion generators to work at full output.
Can you use a grinder/welder system to build a block to re-direct, the beam as a weapon once the loop is charged, and grind it down to allow charge
For the Laser IDK.
But for the Ion Bram...
Short, Nope.
And thats why:
The charged Ion Beam allways makes Damage to Blocks that aren't fully constructed Ion Beam Combiners, wich means, thanks to the explosive damage, your Array blows up in exactly that moment, the Combiner gets Grinded to its last Construction Stage or the Projection becomes to the first Stage.
Set up some timers and have a laser gun shooting at some intervals :D
i agery yeah
bro
As a bombardment weapon you can afford to just sit a few kilometers out as you trickle charge the capacitor.
homeworld 2 sounds ...great xD (the plasma thing firing)
Hi I need help the star Trek mods weapons is not working can jou do a video of it ?
but how can you AIM and shot your laser from the loop? no rotor is fast enough to make proper change in angle within that time frame. I don't get it.
It really can only be built as a fixed forwards firing weapon unless you put the entire beam system on rotors.
@@JackRPG Actually I did find a way to somewhat controll it using your method with prism-on-piston along with prism-turret using 2 rotors for changing directions. It's so damn expensive to fire tho :P
could use a piston system to lower and raise the "loop" and make it fire that way... as i assume this will be ONLY on a VERY large ship that you have the space to do all this:)
or have most of the loop stationary and have a piston lower one of the combiners out of the way and you can fire it that way.
well if you can maneuver with the ship easily, its not very nessecary to have a piston system, but ..yeah its cool
Ok so the first thing I think of is making a death start but the real question is can it cut through stone aka the planet or astroids
You could make a loop with 4 diverters then have a 5th diverter on a piston that interrupts the beam circuit.
Was GLaDOs high when she made the ion beam emmiter?
What if someone made a ship with a heavy armour shell, then a shell completely filled with combiners pointing outwards
Can you have just 2 redirects facing each other (instead of 4 making a loop) ?
i did try that. when two combiners are facing eachother the good news is nothing explodes, but i have no idea whether that setup would be a valid charging loop, i'll have to test that specifically next, but the main thing is you don't have to worry about explosions if you have 2 combiners facing eachother.
7:50 2.5KW, waw, that's like 2 500 watts of power, a bit more than my electric kettle
Balance? What's balance?
they fixed it. it uses 500 MW now
So, what happens when you pass through the beams while it is all charging up and getting bigger?
He did show that off. if you're not in front of the final ejection of the beam, it simply occludes on your character model harmlessly. if you're in front of the final beam, however, you get hurt.
i wonder if an opponent could catch the beam and redirect it back to the source
Not gonna lie, this seriously reminds me of portal : D
Any way to make the beam store up and trigger via NOT removing a block? Kinda useless in a survival mode setting.
Piston
Ya just stick the block that is redirecting the beam from the fire direction into the loop on a piston and retract it to fire. Or have a 5th block you push into the beam to fire.
Dose it damge voxels?
Way cooler than my laser.
I'd say this mod is missing a shunt block that can flip the laser output from one direction to another. Mucking about with rotors is too imprecise
Having to take a block away that this fires also seems strange,
you sure this won't work any other way?
This video is quite outdated.
There are now blocks which can be set to fire in two different directions at different increments from 0 to 100%.
This way you can make a turret work without removing blocks.
this is getting weird. why whenever i think of something, jack RPG either does a video on it, or someone else begins making the mod.
it can be used as the glassing beam for the convenant super carrier
What about using it for an ion cannon type fighter.
the ion cannon blocks can only fit large grids, the smaller laser though can fit both small and large grids so it would be perfect for a fighter.
Very interesting mod! I probably wouldn't use it myself, seems a bit complicated to fire the thing lol!
Really wish that you could deactivate those combiner blocks individually, so that you could amass a big charge and then activate the one that aims it.
it reminds me of the early system for lasers in form the depths.
I could never seem to get the AI to work in that game.
What's the game showed at the end with the female character with what seems to be a gun?
Love your videos dude :)
I'd use it for base security, while at the same time as the ultimate anti-air ion cannon
1mw is 1000kw so why do you need 9 reactors for 100kw draw?
JackRPG
can't do math, don't shame him
So, it's like the old MA Laser Systems mod, only it requires rotors to be used effectively.
how are you doing that copy paste trick?
Would be cool to implement for the wandering earth build on the workshop
Can thid be ported xbox?
What game was that in the background at the end?
Death Star confirmed. I'm guessing that there is a group of modders out there trying to make it possible to blow up a planet on SE with a laser, and other scifi themes.
Only complaint about the video is that I didn't see it blow anything up. Put some ships in front next time.
The block that is changing the direction of the lazer looks like it's from Portal 2.
A death star with this mod.....
@JackRPG
how to build far in - Space Engineers ? i needs help i have mods in my world and i use moded blocks is big.. i cant building ;p
7:20/16:41
king_fire77 try holding ctrl and use the scroll wheel, it only works in creative though, if you are in survival then there’s nothing you can do
Could just use a piston to remove the block.
It's a fair bit complicated innit
You can build the ram laser thing from the last Jedi
15:35 actually no, you can make it a super beam now, no loop needed
I really wanted to see you shoot a ship with a laser
Why do you need 8 large reactors for the iron beam if large reactors can generate 10.5 megawatt? There are 1000 kilowatts in a megawatt so one large reactor is more than enough.
Did the math, one large reactor can power 4,200 ion generators at once continuously.
Thats amazing im gonna have fun with that lol
Just needs a block that will act like a discharge point without needing to remove a loop block to fire.
you don't need to actually remove a loop block though, just put one of them on a piston to lower it out of the way to fire and raise it back up to recharge.
i made a 700 m long ship that had no charge up yet still had max power about 600 of ion generators to work
Time to build a glassing beam
getting some Portal vibes
Now I have to make the Excalibur from Ace Combat 0.
IMA FIRIN MA LASER!!!
*Hears the sound effect*
HOLY SHIT ITS THE ION FRIGATES FROM HOMEWORLD AHHHHHH
Is this a bug or a feature?
Yes.
I wish space engineers has something like this, instead of just slap n forget turret.
Did you say it needs 100kw? Did you mean Gw?
HomeWorld iron cannon sound xD
Now imagine this but it also collects components when it destroys blocks
