i do not think that leyline will work here as meria is producing the mana, not the creature tapped to produce it as this is part of the cost of meria's ability
Correct, per scryfall:
"An ability that triggers “whenever you tap a creature for mana” triggers only if you activate a mana ability of a creature including {T} in its cost. Mana abilities that don’t include the {T} symbol and instead say “Tap an untapped creature you control” or similar won’t cause Leyline of Abundance’s second ability to trigger. Similarly, it won’t trigger if you tap a creature to activate a mana ability of another object (even if that mana ability also includes {T}). "
Does mana reflection and nyxbloom still work?
I Can't Wait To Turn All My 0 Mana Artifacts Into Mox Emeralds
I just thought of using Spellbook 😂
Except you're not getting them to tap for mana on turn 1 which is the whole reason moxen are so good... we've seen this effect on urza and galazeth already and they're both much stronger commanders than this.
@@benbarclay4239 When you play lots of 0 mana artifacts you can pretty much use the second ability and draw into more of em.. Also you can use greens anti counter cards in order to stop the opponent from countering your stuff while also staxing him with all the spheres.. It will be very good i guess. The thing is that this commander will oftern enter the battlefield on turn 2 which is faster than urza.
@@Rouricht Sure you could play lots of 0 mana rocks and draw a ton of cards, but in Gruul colors, to what end? The reason urza is so dominating is because he provides a payoff himself, and he's in a color that can go for alternate win conditions. Gruul typically wants to be stompy, and while the mana rock aspect of this is fine for ramping out stuff, it's no better than what green can already do, and it doesn't seem to lead anywhere anyway. Can't even draw your deck and praetor's grasp the blue player. This seems like a fun and quite playable commander, but ppl are reallyyyy over exaggerating just how much she can do.
Naturally Most Blue Cedh Commanders Or Anyone With Blue Is Going To Out Perform Pretty Much All Of Gruul But On A Channel Popularized By Budget Options This Commander Is Magnificent And Interesting. Magical Christmas Land Is Where Everyone Wants To Be When Brewing Decks.
"This is brilliant. But I like this."
Tapping equipment attached to your creatures sounds like a good fit for this deck
Who will bother with equipment? Everyone is just going to make red green treasures. If this came out six years ago maybe cool things like equipment would be a thing but equipment generally sucks in commander anyways. Or will be colorless matters like the Urza deck and red green treasures. It would have been cool a while ago but now it’s just boring. Thank you wizards.
@@theetiologist9539 It doesn't work with treasures, it says non-token. This is why he's saying Equipment, there's a couple 0 mana equipment you can utilize.
Yeah there's some stax potential, lots of ways to build, but I see a lot of fun in Equipment and creatures/ aggro
i got urza equipment juest for this reason
My first version was voltron, very cheap powerful deck. But playing big stuffs is better than making big stuffs.
Wait, doesn't this turn the red Artifact land into a red/green artifact land? And the Darksteel artifact land!
Dont forget cheap stuff like liquimetal coating and torque to turn anything into an artifact on demand.
@@HarmonicResonanceScale But why wouldn't you just tap the liquimetal coating or torque instead of tapping them to turn something else into an artifact and then tapping that artifact?
@@triopsate3 that is a great question 🤣
@@triopsate3 damn bro I went full galaxy brain on that one.
@@triopsate3 turn magda into an artifact than it combos with clock of omens, making infinite treasures , than you can tap the treasures with clock for infinite untaps of magda, which you can use with the general to make infinite green and exile your whole library
The issue with Mox Emerald wasn't really necessarily in what you can do on turn 3. It's the turn-0 stuff that made it terrifying.
Turning Magda into an artifact seems pretty strong for this deck
Liquimetal torque!! :D
From the rulings on leyline of abundance: "An ability that triggers 'whenever you tap a creature for mana' triggers only if you activate the mana ability of a creature including [tap] in its cost. Mana abilities that don't include the [tap] symbol and instead say 'tap an untapped creature you control" or similar won't cause Leyline of Abundance's second ability to trigger. Similarly, it won't trigger if you tap a creature to activate the mana ability of another object (even if that mana ability also includes [tap])"
So no, it sadly does not work here, neither will mana reflection or nyxbloom ancient for the artifacts. The latter two will boost your lands though.
Thank you for the clarification. I was wondering about that
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't Birgi also synergize with the artifacts coming down? So now your 0mv artifacts are making 1 red on ETB and can also tap for 1 green.
birgi does not trigger on etb
It's on cast but I think it'll work pretty well for this
With gruul?! Artifacts just become a massive ramp to potentially a turn 3 galta or even eldrazi locking your opponent out
Remember how channel was banned in commander? 🙄
Meria, she is perfect for my Gruul Vehicle-deck. Turn all my cars 🚗 and ships 🛳 into mana.
Needs horizon stone to stockpile mana, then a bunch of the devastating X burn spells to close out the game.
I wouldn't call Meria broken by any stretch of the imagination. She's very good and I am absolutely going to be building a deck with her at the helm, but she isn't broken.
She has a lot of contingency built-in to keep her in check. Mainly being unable to tap artifact tokens for mana or card selection means you only have a finite amount of activations available to you, both of which utilitze your primary resource. Also only being able to generate Green mana can put a major hitch into your plans at times when you need Red for some removal or creatures. Yes, most of the deck is going to be colourless, but the chances of needing Red mana when you need it but not have enough aren't 0. Mana filtering helps, but I can forsee some moments of getting mana screwed.
But the upsides far outweigh the negatives. Easy, free ramp in the Command Zone is always strong. The card selection also being in the Command Zone means you don't need to run as much card draw in the 99 since your Commander does it well enough for you. Equipment become mana rocks with huge upsides and the generally useless 0-mana artifacts become Mox Emeralds. Someone else in the comments did mention Vehicles as well. So really there are a lot of directions you can take Meria in. But she has enough of a leash on her power level to keep her from truly busted territory, unlike Urza.
I mean a pretty good strategy in green is getting jaheira into play though
I don't think being unable to tap tokens artifacts that major downside at all, if you look at mosts of Urza's decklists almost none of them capitalizes mana from tokens, but I agree with you on the rest.
youre kinda insane for that one, its basically a red/green urza but instead of paying 5 mana to play a card you essentially paying 2 to draw
@@bre.resende blue has access to counter, draw, untap and other artifact support dramatic reversal etc. green and red pick up access to treasure support merging with your artifact theme. That makes it a bit of an apples and oranges comparison.
@@benknock981 Urza and Meria's exile effects have fundamental differences to each other. Urza's effect allows you to use your regular mana to pay for the cost so you can use a mix of lands and Urza's effect to activate it so the effects aren't truly competing for the same resources. Plus you get to play cards exiled with the effect without paying their mana costs so you get to cheat mana costs. Meria can only use her abilities by tapping your nontoken artifacts, and you still have to pay any mana costs to cast spells exiled with her second effect, which directly eats into your supply of mana unless you run some of the cheesey things Mitch suggests in the video, which in and of themselves are few and far between. Plus neither Urza nor Meria are true card draw effects, but card selection more akin to Scry and Surveil.
Do Leyline, Mana Reflection and Nyxbloom actually work as implied here?
The creatures being tapped aren't the ones producing mana. Meria is the one producing mana, and she doesn't tap to produce it.
I think so for leyline, which was the only one in question, as all it requires is a creature being tapped and mana produced, it dose not specify that its when that specific creature had to be the producer, jusy the reason the mana was produced
I don't know if Leyline of Abundance, Mana Reflection, or Nyxbloom Ancient work. Null rod doesn't shut off your mana because the ability is on the commander, not the tapping permanent. Judges?
@@mrjey3434 leyline will help for any of the artifacts that are also creatures at least.
@@mrjey3434 how does nyxbloom ancient not work?
Yes, sadly, the way the "when you tap an x for mana" abilities work is they require the X to have an ability with the Tap symbol in the ability that is producing mana. I checked the ruling for Nyxbloom the other day.
it's because the thing being tapped isnt the thing producing the mana... thats why it wont work... meria produces the mana, but taps artifcats to produce said mana.
How curious. A red green creature that is fond of artifacts. Given than red and green are great at being anti artifact this is quite unique.
Sorta cool tho that most artifact hate cards still work in this deck since the ability is tied to the commander and not a activated one on the creature.
This card works so well with the new grull precon from Baldur's Gate (Faldorn, Dread Wolf herald). Tap two artifacts, play whatever is on top and you make a 2/2 wolf. Synergy!!
25:32 did you forget that it said nontoken artifact?
Imagine Meria leyline and pili-pala. Tap Pili-pala for double mana with leyline, untap it for 1 mana. Repeat. Infinite mana. Ez.
Shout out to Ezuri's brigade. A 8/8 trample for 4 with metalcraft is a hell of a beatstick.
And Fathomfleet Swordjack is a legitimate wincon in this deck.
Additional options:
Top-deck manipulation - Sylvan Library, Sensei's Divining Top
Ability Duplication - Battlemage's Bracers (allows you to tap 2 artifacts and one mana for 2 activations so acts as a cost reduction)
I’m here to provide a cedh perspective. Yes this card is very very strong, but I don’t think it rises to the level of overpowered. You don’t have access to the artifact tutors the way you would in blue. Nor do you have good counter magic. This, like urza, will also dump its hand and run out of things to do. One of the few combos you can do is sensei’s top with aetherux aaand a cost reducer AAAAND the artifact that lets you play artifacts from the top of your deck. Three card combo in colors where you can’t tutor or get consistent card draw .
Meria lets you play ANY card off the top of your deck if you have enough artifacts, which should be the case if you've dumped your hand. You don't really need any specific pieces to avoid stalling, though you are definitely crippled if the board is wiped of artifacts.
I largely agree with you. I'm ready to eat my words but I don't see anything about this card that makes me feel it's going to make a big impact in cEDH. Sure, there's combos with Mystical Forge, but there's what feels like a hundred commanders that can do Mystical Forge Top loops and none of them really sits in Tier 1.
@@majordude83 She lets you play any card off the top of the library by tapping two artifacts. That effectively reads "You may cast the top card of your library for an additional 2 mana". Let's say you dump her into play turn 1 off a Jeweled Lotus and a land and then drop two artifacts after that, you get to maybe cast a third artifact. Solid turn one. Untap, second land, use two of your artifacts to exile the top card and you may or may not be able to cast that. Doesn't sound too impressive, honestly. Let's not forget we're also in cEDH here and the chances that you eat a Thalia, Ouphe or Rule of Law effect are far from zero here, all of which completely shut this deck down. Add to the mix that your stack interaction is effectively Redblast, Pyroblast and Veil of Summer. What you have is a deck that will maybe do fine at lower to mid power tables, but will lose to any Thassa Consultation lines pretty consistently, doesn't have great matchups into stax and does not have the draw engines that Tymna or blue decks in general get.
Never thought I heard GR stax in my life
I think the Leyline & Mana Confluence don't work the way you think... but no hate on brainstorming a brand spanking new commander
Don't forget I think it's mycosinth lattice... Everything's an artifact
I might sound a little crazy, but I have an idea. This commander, but in a voltron equipment theme. Tap equipment to play more equipment and keep attaching it to her using her second ability for impulse draw. That sounds incredibly fun to play!
Leyline, Mana Reflection and Nyxbloom all don't work they they're described in the video.
The artifacts aren't tapping for mana, they're tapping for the commanders ability which then happens to add mana
IMHO rather than focus on pure artifacts I think the deck would work much better if you use a lot of small artifact creatures, since it says tap and not the symbol (like heritage druidess) then you don't care about summoning sickness, and while green doesn't have the draw effects blue has, it has a lot of draw tied to creatures (for instance glimpse of nature type cards).
Hmm if you have a way to always know the top of the library. You can exile it knowing you can cast it.
Realmwalker seems pretty fun in this deck
I love this card. Such an interesting color combo for the ability.
Meria/Urza do not synergize with cards like Leyline of Abundance, Mana Reflection, and Nyxbloom Ancient. Those latter cards are referring specifically to generic mana abilites involving a card tapping itself (denoted with the tap symbol), like what you would find on a Forest, Llanowar Elves, or a Noble Hierarch. In this instance, the card being tapped does not generate the mana; Meria/Urza generates the mana and taps another card to do it.
Basically, if a card taps itself to generate mana, it works; if a card forces a card to tap (even if it forces itself, like after being made an artifact by some means) it doesn't work.
The positive side to this is, as stated, the card that's being tapped is actually being manually tapped by Meria/Urza's effect rather than its own, which means if it's a creature summoning sickness doesn't factor in.
Eh, shes comparable to Sai, Master Thopterist imo. Probably stronger than him in a lot of cases, but I dont think shes OP. If she drew instead of impulse drew or gave ramp in a color other than green id give her higher marks.
I don't think leyline of abundance works with this cuz you're not tapping the creature for mana you're tapping the creature for your commander to make mana
She turns the artifact mana dorks in ragadragga in to free manadorks. Plus she gets a buff from him too. Most are 2mana also
Interesting, may build around it.
Leyline of Abundance and similar cards won't work. See comprehensive rules:
CR 106.12. To “tap [a permanent] for mana” is to activate a mana ability of that permanent that includes the {T} symbol in its activation cost. See rule 605, “Mana Abilities.”
Some others have pointed this out already, this is just to provide clarification on the specific rule that's in force here.
I’m just gonna run her as a ramp into big Red/Green fatties and a value engine, use some equipments like Batterskull and Swords and might actually finally use Vedalkin Orrery in a deck.
So, vitalize is a green target for isochron scepter, right?
I will be attempting to make a temur deck with her and urza as a fun storm deck and being able to play two moxes will be fun. Kodama karum
First thing that comes to mind... Meria myr tribal (or Myria)
Not often to see a deck that builds itself. Yup, going to be sporting a big ol target at the table
A gruul artifact commander?
Wait. That's illegal
…Huh. That’s pretty strong. Now Faldorn has a new, in the words of Chibi Ruby Rose, “super besty, better than the resty.”
If you go creature route you can benefactors draught isocron sceptre for some real big spicy plays
I’m excited to build an equipment build, it may not be the most powerful but will be way more fair. Of course deck 2 will be eggs/storm
would mana doublers work? tapping an artifact is the activation cost for the commander to add green. so is anything tapping to produce mana? or are things tapping for a cost requirement and the card producing the mana isnt tapping for mana. honest question if the source of mana generation has to be the thing that is tapping to produce double mana.. ?
No, they wouldn’t
Another dude mentioned how it has to have the tap symbol on it.
It’s over with. This is my commander
Finally... and excuse to play Ashnod's Transmogrofier in a legit deck
I believe that the Leyline of Abundance works with this commander but not Mana Reflection or Nyxbloom Ancient specifically because they use the word "it" in the text. Mainly signifying that the item you are tapping is the item that is producing the mana when in fact it's Meria's triggered ability.
@@robertmonroe1883 I believe that you are correct about leyline not working either.
Leslie, reflection, and nyxbloom sadly doesn't work. The ruling says they only happen with abilities with the tap symbol and not "tap an untapped ..."
isnt the tapping part of the cost of adding the mana, not an ability of the artifact. like, the artifact you're tapping doesn't actually have the ability to tap for mana because it depends on your commander being out,... am i undersanding correctly?
I don’t think cards like nyxbloom work here. You’re not getting the tap from the card’s inherent ability, where it has the arrow. You’re getting it from another card, and I don’t think that interaction works. But idk how they’re supposed to interact, and I’ve been wondering about it.
I'm pretty sure you're correct. the way it reads, its not the ability of the artifact/artifact creature, but the ability of meria's in which the cost of adding said mana is tapping an artifact. the artifact isn't the thing producing the mana, therefore it could not, would not be doubled lol
Traxos/Battered/Grinding, Cloudstone Curio, and two 0 cmc artifacts generates infinite green with this commander. I'd especially be on the lookout for the Curio to rise in price.
Cloudstone Curio is already $45
And I'm sure it'll go up even more so.
Says non artifacts
Leyline of Abundance does work because Meria sees you tap an artifact for mana but Leyline of Abundance sees you tap a creature to activate a mana ability. I may be wrong but that's the best way I could explain how it could possibly work.
@@robertmonroe1883Oof my bad been a while since I looked at the rulings. My bad.
You are not tapping the artifacts for mana, you are tapping the artifacts to activate Meira's ability. Would be different if Meria was giving the artifacts the ability, like Jaheira. Jaheira is the Mox Emerald lord you are looking for.
im glad im understanding this correctly. when i saw the mana reflection i got confused lol
WHY IS IT GREEEN HAS WIZARDS FORGOTTEN THAT GREEN IS SUPOSTA HATE ARTIFACTS? First it was Old Gnawbone and now this wtf wizards
Don't forget the green enchantment from new capenna that makes your lands tap to make treasure.
Green AND red. Honestly, I'm getting sick of the artifact synergies. Artifacts are already rediculous in EDH and rife with easy combos. This just craps on the color pie and isn't flavorful.
@@Drako9823 I'm not on the same page as you I just hate that green is getting artifact synergies, like ffs even on Kaladesh and Mirrodin Green was anti artifact but Wizards is just here screwing up the color pie
weeeeell...is it weird? absolutely, but you gotta admit it's awesome, old gnawbone being a dragon makes sense for the treasures but this card is really interesting, the flavor text talks about how green shouldn't fear Artifice as it's still of this world, I find it really Intresting to see a creature of green be interested in it, which also fits why reds here since red means freedom and emotion, she is breaking traditional green ideology and tinkering with artifice.
@@SirGrimLockSmithVIII it’s an artifact
Mana reflection and abilities like it wouldnt work because the commander doesn't give the artifacts the ability she's tapping them and she doesn't tap so no extra mana
Leyline of Abundance doesn't work with abilities that don't have the tapping symbol.
I love Urza Jr. Evil 😈 laughter
while looking through your videos a red title stands out ALOT
So you have all that mana, how do you win?
Legit will only call this card Grulza, nothing eles
Off the top of my head my auto includes in this deck: Omnath, Locus of Mana, Triumph of the Hordes, and Walking Ballista, any other X cost artifact creatures. I'm sure I could come up a lot more janky stupid things if I actually give it some thought lol
Omnath is a great include, Triumph is great if you're planning on going wide, but I'm shying away from X cost creatures. Sure, they're great when you have mana to burn, but not so much when you're setting up. You have to pay into it so the creature doesn't hit the field as a 0/0.
@@terry4574 Ballista would be one of the win cons. With as easily it would be to generate mana in this deck and Omnath's ability to keep your green mana floating for as long as it's alive you'd wait to play Ballista until you have enough mana to take out all your opponent's. Which can be more easily done in conjunction with Triumph of the Hordes giving Ballista infect
@@terry4574 all you'd need is 64 mana in total. 60 to bring out Ballista with 30 counters and 4 for Triumph. And considering my build would also include Birgi, God of Storytelling and probably tangleroot gathering up that much mana shouldn't be to much of an issue lol
This card feels a lot all in. If your commander dies or is countered then all your ramp aimant ramp. Your ramp can’t help you pay the commander tax or your big spells. Urza is blue which gives him access to counter spells. This card lacks the access to protection that make going all in a safer game plan.
Red elemental blast, pyroblast, Veil of summer, autumn Veil, and a dozen different green protection spells. Seems okay to me
Tapping artifact creatures as artifacts to get mana, not creatures. So technically not Tapping it as a creature. Correct?
I wouldn't call it broken per se, it gives you ramp. A lot of ramp... And that's a problem, if you keep her alive it could give you issues with an artifact focused deck and the exile ability can give you possibilities.
waaaait....I can Dragonstorm in Gruul with this!
For anyone who thinks this isnt broken. Just build a cheap voltron version to test out how quickly she can get out of hand. Ive come up with nearly $1200 version of this with some bigger stuff.... i think it will consistently play the whole deck between turns 3-7.... as early as 3. And commonly by turn 7. Deck on board. Just all of it.
"We probably already have 20 artifacts"...... probably!?!?!? No. We do. We do my friend.
Treasure deck with Academy Manufactor seems good with this.
nontoken
@@JamivanRooyen It helps if I read the card...
I’m a little more tempered on this card. It kinda sequences oddly. You probably still want to run 1 mana dorks to get this out on turn 2. How many cheap artifacts are you going to run to name sure you get atleast 2 artifacts which gives you 1 card per turn. If you tap your artifacts to draw cards then you lose your mana for your big drops.
Video starts at 4:20 no joke
You created a monster
Get ready for ten minutes turns
This exemplifies everything I hate about green decks
I don't think a bunch of the cards in this deck actually synergize as you think they do, because the artifacts themselves aren't producing any mana, it's the commander. Tapping the artifacts isn't activating a mana ability, it's just the cost for your commander's ability...
You are not actually tapping a permanent for mana with this commander, you are tapping an artifact as an activation cost and your commander is producing 1 green mana so lay line, mana reflection, and nyx bloom do not work with it at all.
Am I the only one seeing a good Modified Commander in her?
I’m going to build this commander with a nice dose of infect included
So broken. Might as well just add "Partner with Jhoira Weatherlight Captain" to it.
that would actually be broken lol...
Vedalken Orrery is cheaper than Ugin now.
Everything imaginable except a Temur elf… even stuff this broke. Getting ridiculous. Legend of Zelda’s Link needs a card!!! They did street fighter, walking dead, and other things… we need a Temur elf.
this is amazing
Damnit, why gruul urza?
Stax bad wizards. Stax baddddddd!!!!!!
A more fair and balanced urza
brigi could go with her
So, the anti artifact colors now like artifact? Bruh
Gruulza!!!!!
Faldorn is better imo has better payoffs imo as a commander
Mitch. I know you need traffic and likes, but you and I both know this comes nowhere near Urza and nowhere near the realm of legitimately broken cards. Turning nontoken artifacts into a source of mana is a good effect, but it doesn't have synergy with mana doublers and this commander can't use your artifacts for mana, then impulse on top of that.
This has much fewer options to counter people messing with you, is more vulnerable to removal with only 3 toughness, not being in blue means less consistent ways to tutor artifacts and less abundant draw, all in all its just merely a good card.
I enjoy clicking your videos for spoilers, but seeing you exaggerate how good a card is over and over has gotten grating.
Meria stax!
Its Urzas wife. Not urza jr.
She can barely be compared to Urza. He cast cards for free, she doesn't. He makes one card he can use for mana, she doesn't. She is strong but, meh, not broken.
Diet Urza, she's not really broken at all
Overpowered? The first ability looks like Jaheira but worse
Yessssssssss!!!!
Can't we all just agree to ban the Orbs?
Ban them in your own pod. I enjoy playing against stax because it makes the game more complex when you can interact with it. I play kinnan cEDH, figuring out when to dismantle stax adds a lit to cEDH. But I don’t think it should be in casual pods grinding the game to a halt and only letting one player play. Again, that’s a discussion to have with your group.
@@grinreaperoftrolls7528 nah that dont work
Seems like throwing jaheira into the 99 would be good call
New urza xd
Second
First
Dont think this is any where near as strong as he makes it seem. The non token stipulation hurts this pretty bad. And the two abilities on her work against each other you’re either getting mana or exiling.
