Steam Railways of Northern Portugal in 1973

- A collection of digitised (16:9) Super 8 cine films featuring various steam operations in northern Portugal during August 1973. Locations covered include Porto and suburbs, Regua, Tua and the narrow gauge branch lines to Vila Real and Mirandela.
A wide variety of locomotive classes are seen, both broad and narrow gauge including the delightful Henschel mallett tanks.
Original sound recorded on a cassette tape recorder which on a few occasions malfunctioned resulting in some frustratingly silent scenes.

Only just stumbled on this and stunned by the high quality of transfer to digital and with sound! Some of the best footage I have seen from this era. Well done!
David, glad you enjoyed it - makes uploading digitised old cine film worthwhile. Wish I could go back to Porto in the 1970s with today's video kit but I suppose life doesn't work like that!

Paul you have done Portuguese railways real justice. This is brilliant. I only managed to travel there in 1989 because I contacted a Portuguese Radio Ham. I loved the country so much I learned the language. Railways are a passion of mine so thanks!
So glad you enjoyed the cine film. Whilst in Porto I stayed in a hotel about 100 metres from the loco depot - heaven! Wish I could go back in time with with a decent video camera!

Do I see some British built (possibly Glasgow) locos? an unmistaken British line about them.. one looked like a kick off from the K3 class
With their inside cylinders and curved running plate they were often likened to the LNER B12 class of locomotive. They were, however, built by Henschel in1910. Our train from Porto to Regua was hauled by number 281. Those were the days!
@@paulravenscroft1704 Really? wow. I never knew. but I like the clean line. to me. Many of the rest of the worlds locos lack the beauty and grace of British steam locos. especially American ones. Only being built for work and in some ways over engineered

@@paulravenscroft1704 no problem, although I think that we should later switch to a more private discussion. A friend of mine is making a documentary film about Portugal - a part of that film is related to his first visit to the country that occurred in the late 60s, and it speaks about traveling in those times. They were using various archive materials which they found on U-Tube, and now are trying to get the rights to use that footage. It seems your films are your own property, and therefore you own the rights for the footage.
Most important, it is not a commercial project and it will be shown in some festivals only.
That's fine by me.

If e-mail isn't convenient, please suggest other method.

@@paulravenscroft1704 Bloody Good though! I travelled on the lines out of Trindade to Póvoa de Varzim and from Guimarães to Trindade in the late 80s and early 90s. A great adventure and a vertical learning curve learning to speak Portuguese😁😁
