What a great movie--unlike any other movie you've seen.
I've been watching it for decades and am still not sure I understand it completely. That's just fine.

      Your not supposed to.
Tarkovsky was endlessly searching for meaning.

It's genius of course but I do remember once seeing and laughing at a comment that was basically 'I once watched Stalker on fast forward... still seemed a bit slow'

Absolutely amazing film. My first Tarkovsky film and what a great entry point. The Sacrifice might be my favorite from him, thematically similar in some ways.

In fact, I think that Andey Rublev is his best movie, followed by Stalker, Nostalgy and Sacrifice. Well, Solari and Mirror are also captivating.

The first time I saw the movie, the 'meat grinder' scene (the first clip here) had me as tense as any horror movie.

I remember feeling somewhat underwhelmed by "the room" the first time I watched this film. It had been built up to such a degree that I suppose nothing could
    ever have matched one's expectations.
But then the very last shot of the film delivered the payoff, and I realized that "the room" and its suggested mystery was not the point of the story.

I saw Stalker during lockdown, it’s a hard watch , with long periods of not much happening but, it’s probably more thought provoking than anything else I’ve ever seen. It’s subject matter , tenets , questions and arguments rattled around my head for weeks afterwards. I thought at the time I couldn’t invest in almost 3 hours of my time watching it again , almost 3 years later I think I probably would.
Don’t let me put anyone off, this is original cinema that you should see at least once.

I like when, after the adventure, which I won’t spoil, the Stalker says of the Writer and the Professor, “Their faith has become atrophied due to lack of use.” A strange movie that defies easy explanations, and leaves it up to you to interpret its meaning.

It gave me the chills, that scene shown at the end of this video. After the Writer and the Professor have explained to us their beliefs, and we get the insight of that vision/dream; the breaking of the fourth wall by each of the characters almost invites the viewer to examine their own beliefs, and puts you right in the Zone with them.
I'm so glad I knew nothing about this film before watching it. So very thankful that it is free to view on UA-cam! This film was such an experience to view, but I'm not sure when I'll be ready for a second viewing... Going to take some time to contemplate all these ideas... I feel this film is incredibly relevant right now, but I'm not exactly sure why.

First time I saw it I appreciated it without actively liking it. Second time some years later I loved it. I'm due to watch Solaris again soon. And Mirror. Recently watched Nostalghia and really liked it. His films may have slow sections but they are not boring. You need to be prepared to live in the world he has created. And appreciate some art, damnit.

The whole concept also Reminds me of a short story that I read once in a compilation of russian science fiction. The name of both the short story and the authors eludes me.right now, i'll have to look It up when i get back home.

Stalker is a book. They made a film of it "The movie is an adaptation of a novel called Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers, Arkady (1925-91) and Boris (1933-2012); Tarkovsky read it soon after it came out in the literary magazine Avrora in 1972. "

@@HuplesCat ok i looked It up, The book it's called. The best of Fantascienzia Russa, and i think it's the same story. What i think happened Is that they mistranslated the title short story because in my edition It says The forbiddenn experiment, now my book Is a spanish edition which may explain that. Whats also interesting Is that as far as i know the novel Is from 1971 but the book i have was originally printed in 1965, so i think it's an earlier versión. Anyway it's a really cool book, If you can find a copy pick It up, i found mine in a bookstore one day whe i just walked straight into the sci di section and o picked It up along with Martians go home by Friedrik Brown and i had some happy reading that summer

For me this is a case of 'be careful what you wish for'. I watched Stalker in 2019 after a decade long diet of big flashy blockbusters, hoping to find nuance and intelligence. What it made me realise is that these days I'm impatient and kind of stupid. I'm sure it's great, though!

I was disappointed the first time I watch it, we never get to see the room, I was like the protagonist who was disappointed that they didnt go in. The second time I watch it, I understand its meaning more, the protagonist rely on others to heal his own faith, but ironically the most faithful (his wife) and the miracle (his daughter) are already next to him, which he fails to realise because he has too much doubt in his faith.

I bought the Criterion blu ray based on Marks enthusiastic review. I was v disappointed...in myself, for not liking it! I really tried to. But for me it was just too slow and ponderous. I admire the filmmaking though and would love to know what the original version wouldve looked like.

Meh. Never saw the film but I read the book, Roadside Picnic, last year. Despite it being a much loved sci-fi classic I didn't care for it. Way overrated. The concept is great: alien spaceships dumb trash heaps at several locations across the globe then disappear. 10 years later we're still investigating them. But the actual playing out of events isn't too exciting. A lot of weirdness and no real answers.
