How many automobiles have Americans trashed since WWII? The concept of NDP/GDP developed during the Depression and WWII. Television advertising did not exist before WWII. Consumerism with planned obsolescence exploded in the US after WWII and 90% of American homes had televisions by 1960. But economists say nothing about the depreciation of durable consumer goods. Every time I added this to Wikipedia it was deleted.
Hey you have a nice point. However, there is a flaw in your argument. Since GDP is a concept which is calculated from the producer's side, it basically represents the output added to the economy. When we calculate NDP, we are basically calculating net output added to the economy. As consumer durables are not used in producing goods and services, their depreciation cannot be subtracted to calculate net output.
@@PrepMateias Are economists supposed to be on the producers side or are they supposed to be scientifically objective? Who pays the salaries of economists? So any depreciation that might result from planned obsolescence just has to be replaced by the consumer further increasing the income of the producer. But notice that economists do not advocate mandatory accounting/finance in the schools. Dumb consumers are not supposed to think of their Net Worth.
