This is one of the few amtrak trains that use superliner passenger cars east of the Mississippi River. The other trains are the city of new orleans and the capital limited.
Those are P40s, if any Genesis from Amtrak has an 3rd digit that starte with “8” for example, “837” its a P40, any Amtrak Genesis with out a 3rd digit 8 is a normal P42.
Constant upgrades, I think the Siemens fleet are starting their trials on the Auto Train but P40s aren’t finished just yet. But like old equipment, constant wear and tear with the harsh route and weather conditions, they will show their age and breakdown, thats why we see a Dash-8 in the consist or ALC-42 if available.
Plus, they removed the strobe lights and rear cab control seat and windows. Those were features that the p40 genesis locomotives originally had. They even made the wind shield windows smaller, too.
This train only makes a few stops before heading into Florida. This wouldn't be a problem for the stations along the line since this train is too long for the platforms at most stations.
Amtrak should experiment with a second auto train. Maybe having an auto train running from Chicago or St. louis to Phoenix or Chicago to New orleans or dallas.
If Amtrak used more than 2 Genesis locomotives to haul extra mail on long distance services, then why do they only use 2 Genesis on a train with goddamn cars lol
The Auto Train’s route is mostly flat with fairly shallow grades, and more importantly, it’s nonstop. So acceleration isn’t as important, and you can use less horsepower. Remember that the Lake Shore Limited also usually ran with only 2 units even during the mail & express era.

I haven't thought of that but you're correct!
Capitol Limited isn't running right now. They combined it and the Silver Star into the Floridian due to tunnel work near NYC.
The worlds longest regularly scheduled passenger train
One of my friends is a conductor on there, and whenever he sees me trackside, he goes horn crazy and says hi on the radio.
super great video 😍😍❤❤
Great video! Cool auto-trains!

I really enjoyed your excellent video!
Pretty surprising yhat they only need 2 P42s to pull 32 traincars

@@d-rocksadventuresandgaming Actually these were upgraded to a 4250hp, so technically its a P42 guts.

@@OntarioTrafficMan the 700 number series genesis locomotives are p32acdms
very good quality videos. great job.
Hello..greetings from Indonesian train lovers..very good video 🎉😊
In total there’s 38 cars on the auto-train
The amount of auto racks varies depending on how many ppl there are. More ppl=more cars. More cars=more auto racks.
@ that is 100% true
I didn't know it was a variable. I thought t was a set. That's good to know
Is Amtrak GE P42DC unit 53 for sale yet???
what locomotive they use?
P40s and the new alc-42
@FutureBaggageHandler wow

They only stop to crew change. Otherwise, it's nonstop, traffic permitting of course.
@@michlo3393 Yeah, I believe Florence, SC they also re-fuel. At least that's what I've seen in the past.

Am I seeing this correctly, 3 diners?
2 diners and a lounge car

@@GintaPPE1000 what about stopping at potential signals
Amtrak's money making train
The Acela and Northeast Regional also turned a profit pre pandemic, not sure if they still do
@@OntarioTrafficMan
I think they do because of the record high ridership
Also, amtrak california trains such as the surf liner, the san Joaquin, and the capital are making profits too.
Too slow. Howmany Km/hr? 🤷🏻♂️
~114 Km/hr max. The autoracks at the end are freight cars so it's only permitted to run at freight speeds.
