You’re not insane - it’s the same with competitions shooting where we want the heavier pistol to make the snap less snappy, and it feels better and is easier to control a shot with a heavier gun (seems counterintuitive) but I actually weight my pistol so that it’s heavier so that when there’s a good snap, there’s more weight to absorb the snappiness. I don’t want less snappy, I just want to FEEL “less snappy.” And I agree about the material choice for the frame. Aluminum bronze looks amazing.
Got my CPM-20CV textured aluminum Runt 5 a couple of days ago. Great knife that fires even harder than my Pro Tech Newport. The production 20CV blade is a flat grind instead of the hollow grind on the 154CM hand ground models, so they’re not super thin behind the edge. I LOVE the textured black aluminum handle. It’s the perfect amount of grip compared to their smooth handles and it adds a lot of visual interest that many Pro Tech knives lack. Normally I agree with most of your taste in knives Nick, but I honestly really like the “chalky “ black aluminum finish that Pro Tech uses. It’s really durable and I think it looks higher end than most aluminum finishes. Matte black doesn’t look tacky to me compared to a lot of other anodized aluminum finishes. Wish all of their knife models and handle colors/materials were available with that awesome texture! My only complaint is the edge bevel grind on my particular Runt 5. It was a bit uneven out of the box. It was also not very sharp. My Newport was probably the sharpest production edge I’ve ever experienced. The Runt… not so much. Nothing my Wicked Edge sharpening system can’t transform, so overall I’m very pleased.
I had to send my blade show titanium Malibu in twice. Grind varied 10-35* on the same side. Sent it in for a new blade, came back with a 15-25* grind variance and a big chunk missing from the scale from the grinder. Seems they are having issues with QC. I like protech and love Dave but... I dunno if I will buy more.I easily fixed the grind but on a knife that costs that much... especially after it coming from new so damn badly.
Mine definitely wasn’t that bad. I always reprofile and mirror polish factory edges, so I’m not too worried about the less than perfect edge. It also wasn’t anywhere near as expensive as yours. Sorry to hear about your experience.
@@octavioperez6996 I have 8 pro tech knives and I love them but it seems they are having major QC issues. There is not much of a choil and the edge thickens up quickly on the Malibu so I wanted a blade replacement. To their credit, they did fix the scale, finally looks like I want after cleaning up the edge, it was at least salvageable without eating up 3-4 sharpenings worth of wear. All of my other ones have been damn near perfect, especially for a factory edge. Consistent bevel right at 20°. I still reprofile them because I'm picky but it was absolutely usable. I know they used to only have one person sharpening but they have hired lots of new people to try to keep up with the Malibu demand. The fact that it was a special edition with beautiful anodized and tumbled scales and it was obviously not even looked at was a bummer. I don't expect perfect, not even on a $600 knife but better than that.
I’d love to be an ambassador or something for this brand I just wish they truly weren’t so expensive, are you selling any of the runts you have? I’d love to get one.
Thank you for another awesome knife review. I enjoy your reviews very much. I was wondering if you could take a look at a knife called Joule by Boker and review it. Thank you.
I love my Malibu, but the aluminum handles really bother me. Just feels so cheap, and as a result I rarely end up carrying it. I wish they would do more titanium models.
aluminum in and of itself does not make a "cheap" knife or even a "cheap feeling" knife. It's the alloy they use. If I recall correctly, 7075+ is the hotness in alum and hard anodizing it actually makes it very durable. VERY significantly better than 6065
@@squirts1 I think it has more to do with weight, to be honest. 7075 might be just as good as titanium in every imaginable way, but if it’s only 1/3 as heavy it’s going to have that chintzy aluminum handle feeling. The weight of titanium just feels better in a knife handle in my opinion. The Malibu doesn’t have that same premium feel that other knives in my collection have, all because of the lightweight handles.
G'day Nick, well made and quite attractive, just not sure what I'd ever use something like these for. Too many moving parts for my liking, but great point on autos for those with less dexterity. Cheers Duke.
what do you mean to many parts? I have taken apart my Pro-Tech SBR and TR3 Autos and there's in all 6 peices. If you decide to get a lock back, liner lock, flipper, especially adding ball bearings there will be about as many parts. These Pro-Tech autos do not run on bronze washers or bearings of any kind, it is just metal on metal, so I don't get what you mean?
Barely a year later and they're asking $315 for the "bronze" with a regular production non hand ground blade... what a joke. Somehow the bronze anno is worth $150????
Thanks Nick 😊 LOVE MY ROSE GOLD CALMIGO. .MINE GOES IN MY 5TH POCKET, ,JUST A LITTLE BIT LONGER BLADE, ,154CM . PRO TEC NAILS IT !! LIKE The Logo on .MY CALMIGO Scales.
The short blade is for jurisdictions that make it illegal to sell/buy automatics with 3-inch or longer blades, which make it almost useless for those occasions when you might need something to snap out quickly (self-defense). No one is in rush to break down a cardboard box. A short blade makes it pointless to have an automatic, unless the owner simply likes the mechanics and fabrication, which can be spotty sometimes. These days, a good button-lock has faster deployment and takes about as much effort to open. Maybe even less effort. With automatics, to prevent accidentally deployment, the button is made hard to push for deployment.
That's how I feel about the Lil Native versus the Dragon Fly, , you kicked the Native out the door because heavier and over built for such a small knife, kinda feel like your contradicting yourself on a principle there, but hey your human, still the best anayalis of knives on you tube though, take care
Yeah but he was saying that the “snap” of the knife is better when it’s heavier and I get that. It’s less snappy and more controlled , with the same amount of actual firing force. I get that. And we’re all humans who also may feel differently about a knife, when it’s in hand etc. hope you’re having a great day and enjoying the hobby as much as possible. Nicks a good dude and an honest dude - one of the most honest I’ve found in my years of taking in UA-cam reviews and collecting knives. He may actually outright refuse their proposals as well knowing ahead of time that the product is crap. My understanding is that Nick is pretty picky about what he does a video on and will refuse to review the product if he has nothing good to say about it. His formula is the good the great the bad the ugly. this implies a product needs to have at least one great and one or more good thing to say about it.

Absolutely not true for this law. It’s a law that is completely pointless. A knife is a knife. A two inch blade in the wrong hands is just as dangerous as a 2.25 or 3 inch blade in the wrong hands. Don’t just talk out of your ass Dante.
