    Wind & Wuthering has really great song writing... Afterglow is not performed as well as later became live, but the song itself is strong. Earl of Mar, One for the Vine and Blood on the Rooftops are all top ten Genesis songs for me. Btw, the last of those, Blood on the Rooftops, was a Hackett-Collins composition.

      Also, I can attest that W&W contains Tony's best keyboard solo he's ever written (on "...In That Quiet Earth"), as someone who's transcribed every solo he's done between '70 & '80 (including Spot the Pigeon, and his debut solo record, "A Curious Feeling").

      Kinda yes, especially "In The Wilderness" - however, the songwriting is just marred because they couldn't produce it like they wanted to - Jonathan King wanted lush strings aka the time period but tbh it sounded like they were added after the guys had layed down their tracks so the mixes don't "sit" right. Would love to hear this as the band intended but I guess that will never happen...

    Genesis never lost their progressive side, though. Each album contains at least one extended, progressive song. Right up until the very end.
    They did start writing shorter songs that became hits, and thanks to MTV and the like, the focus shifted onto their commercial appeal.
    But I see them as a progressive rock band that eventually wrote pop songs as well. And why not? There's no shame in selling millions of records
    and putting food on the table if the songs are as good as theirs were.
    And to be fair, they always wrote short pop songs as well. They just didn't perfect the formula until the 80's.

    • @Cr8Tron
      @Cr8Tron 4 роки тому +9

      As a hardcore prog dude, I don't necessarily have any issues with pop music, as long as it's not absurdly corny like a lot of their '80s stuff was. In fact, this rule applies to all genres, in my mind.

    • @luisalonsoecheverria

      They, like many other prog bands like Yes, The Moody Blues, and Rush evolved into progressive pop in the 80s.

    • @SpaceCattttt
      @SpaceCattttt 4 роки тому +5

      @@luisalonsoecheverria Indeed! And the only reason why most people don't get that is because they never listened to the early prog rock stuff.
      For any fan of those bands, the progression and the connection between the old and the new, is clear.

    • @SpaceCattttt
      @SpaceCattttt 4 роки тому +3

      @Tom Ffrench There's always been bad pop for as long as there's been pop.
      I think 80's bad pop suffers more today because of the awful production choices made at the time. Too many synth drums and shit. Especially during and after 1986.
      At least 70's bad pop sounds good, even if the songs are terrible.

I think you slighted Trick of the Tail, Wind & Wuthering and ...And Then There Were Three..., they deserve many more accolades. You must put this period in context of their live shows, which were still fantastic and included a lot of music from this period. Some songs I think you missed were "In the Cage" from the Lamb and "Afterglow" from Wind & Wuthering. These are standards from their live shows and fan favorites. Also, "Anyway" from the Lamb has some beautiful piano work by Tony Banks, I don't see why you single this out as a bad track. All in all, great work. Always glad to hear from a dedicated Genesis fan.

      I've never heard it described as that either. I admit that I was one of those who loved the Gabriel-era Genesis above all else and bristled when"And Then There Were Three's" "Follow You, Follow Me" hit the charts, but to diss "Trick of the Tail" makes no sense to me at all, especially since, as Tony has repeatedly stated, many of those songs were drawn from material that already existed at the time Peter left. As for the post about them "playing it safe" on "Trick," anyone who listens in depth will see that there's nothing "safe" about "Dancing On a Volcano" (both literally and figuratively). Listen to Rick Beato's analysis of that song on UA-cam sometime as part of his "What Makes This Song Great" series to see why both that song and the album as a whole deserve respect from serious Genesis fans and musicians (I'm a pianist by profession heavily influenced by early Genesis in particular). At any rate, "out-of-ideas" is the LAST phrase I would ever use to describe "Trick of the Tail!"

    Calling all stations is what you when you only have two of the five original même members of the band and one decides to hijack the production and songwriting process. There’s a reason why Tony Banks haven’t had a successful solo career, while everyone else has had theirs. Peter Gabriel: successful. still touring and making albums. Steve Hackett: successful with albums, even tours to this day with his own band doing his Genesis revisited thing and even Collaborated with Chris Squire Mike Rutherford had his Mike And thé Mechanics. Phil Collins, duh, thanks to Disney and Tarzan, he hold childhoods in the palm of his hands. Tony Banks: nah, not really l. He’s tried tough. But on Calling All a Station he felt he had an opportunity to shine and failed miserably

    The seventies were my teen years and early Genesis (and Yes) pretty much owned my stereo.
    You and I share a gut wrenching awe of suppers ready and a general dissatisfaction with 80s genesis. Although, I have a higher regard for Trick Of The Tail then you do. That may be based on my feeling that trick could have been so much worse. I think, however, that dance, mmm, squonk, and los endos all deserve much more praise than they generally receive.
    I am with you on Duke, but I think abacab deserves better than you gave. Music appreciation is all personal however, so we feel how we feel and that’s just how it is. The 80’s in general were the beginning of the end for music in general so abacab floats on a decade of shit anyway 😖
    You put a lot of work into that retrospective. Well done 👍

    @TheMusicBreakdown Man, there are probably more than 30 years between us (I am 63) but I am so happy that across a generation not only is there still enthusiasm for Genesis (especially the Gabriel years). Though I have more appreciation for ATOTT and WAW than you, other than that you are spot on with your analysis of albums and songs. And of course Supper´s Ready is the greatest progrock-song of all times! I love that song today as I loved it when I first heard it. And next year Steve Hackett will tour with the Seconds Out material. And of course I will be there and hear it again being performed live for the first time since 1976 when Genesis were on the actual Seconds Out tour (w. Bill Bruford). And I will hear it at July 17th 2021 at the exact same venue - the open air arena at St. Goarshausen/Germany...

    & then there were 3 despite lumpy production has several masterpieces, the most vivid memory i have of many gigs i saw is phil bursting out of mike's bass line with 'go west, young man'. No mention of Blood on the Rooftops in your W&W review, a quintessentially British mood moniker. Don't want to discourage this admirable young man but nothing after the Gabriel era is worth watching here & nothing after Duke worth reviewing anyhoo. BTW I've had many a chat with PG in Ladbroke Square Garden & we agreed Anyway is wonderfully profound, although he never revealed if the lamb was an Easter Passion JSB ref. He did hint Selling England was an early indicator that bitcoin is sound money.

    As someone who saw them live 3 times during the Gabriel years ( Trespass-Montreal University in small settings. Foxtrot Tour-Montreal Forum they played Supper's Ready in his intirety and Selling England-Montreal Forum) the kid gets it, the best stuff was done when Gabriel was there (Lamb is out of this world). They gave it a push with Trick of the Tail, I remember appreciating Collins drumming....but it was all downhill from there, Banks was the main composer and his keyboards were all over the place and Rutheford wasn't Steve Hackett. Simply put, they were a different band in different era.

    I would say, I think trespass, trick of the tail and wind and wuthering have all been severely underrated. I consider trespass to be the true start of the epic journey that was genesis as a band, plus it sounds so captivating even though its become quite dated. Also, the first albums with Phil on vocals, even and then there were three, are always underplayed. His theatrical voice and the immense instrumentation on almost all of the post-1975 albums are far from 'boring' as you put it.
    Anyway, great video, your opinions are very well articulated.

    Ha this was fun to watch and kept me hooked. As a 57 year old who loved Genesis you do tend to get passionate about the band, and that includes in a negative way. Your favourites mirror mine, I think I prefer Trespass to Nursery Cryme actually but Foxtrot, Selling England and the Lamb could only ever be the top three. Blood on the Rooftops is probably my favourite ever track though, and shows how much Steve Hackett was missed. Glad someone else agrees that And Then There were Three was the biggest pile of garbage, worse than those which followed. I gave up after Genesis 1983.

    I love TOTT. It was the first Genesis album I’d heard all the way through, first one I bought, and there’s a personal reason I’m particularly attached to it. That said, I prefer the Gabriel years.
    Phil Collins tended to write more “love” pop songs as the band went on, and I don’t like their music after Wind & Wuthering

    Have you seen the Musical box do its Genesis concerts? they are licensed this year to tour the LAMB JUST AS IT WAS toured with the light show etc. YOU have to see it. I could write a whole lot more but I'll say this - its great to hear a young person ( you must about 19 - mid 20's????) experiencing Genesis and getting it!!!!! My time to get started was way back when this was the music of the time in mid 74 at 13 years old. SEPTP was church music for me - Sunday night must listen to to set the vibe for the week back in 74/75 before the LAMB especially. Albeit just in time to miss the SEBTP tour in my area by a few months but in time to get tickets for the next 3 tours. The Lamb tour was my first Genesis concert - Life changing. Peter was to leave within a month of the show I saw in 75. So odd to think that in reality it was almost the end of the beginning. we had no clue. The next 2 tours as I got older hit me hard - the best being 76 which was right up there with the Lamb - but the Lamb was the total sensory experience. The Trick tour could be experience 2.0 - but also a total sensory experience. The lp was good but it left me thinking that the tour was not going to be that great - but I was totally wrong. 77 was not as impactful for me because the slides were gone but still they were on it in that period. I too love Mad Man Moon - also the Lamia. Imagine being 14 - listening to SEPTP - digging it - then being able to go and buy the whole back catalog within a few months to catch up as it were. Dig all that and then the LAMB is released and its all in front of you in real time. No internet, no Iphone or personal computers. Having the time to take to sit and listen to take it all in without feeling like you were dropping your to do list or missing something on the net. Blood on the rooftops captures the zietgeist - I'll make that tea…The music off our life. Btw 'then there was three' was the music I listened to in '79 driving from the east coast to the west coast in the US . I think that music on that Lp was influenced by the band becoming more USA influenced culturally - they were moving away from being so english. I relent that I didn't see the tour of 78,80 82 - I had the chance but I moved away in real time only to return in the mid 90's to realize that the music itself was so great - all the way to the early 80's they wrote great stuff. It just connected. Emjoy it while you can. See the Musical box at all cost - you have to go and see them this year and any year they come close to where you are. Fly if you have to to a city but see them in concert.

    Hi there. Your analysis of each album is very incisive and honest. I am a very long term fan of Genesis and Foxtrot has always been my favourite, as it is yours. I agree with you that the band were at their most creative at this point and the album shines above the others. Interestingly, when you listen to band member interviews many years later they don't see it this way. Instead they see the album as a formative one, progressing towards a higher goal. As musicians you can understand this view but I think it differs from that of many core fans. The band member exception to this view is Steve Hackett who sees this era and Foxtrot very positively. Steve Hackett is also keeping the spirit of Genesis alive with his excellent tours, recommend you try and see one of his gigs if you haven't yet. Thanks so much for posting your video, I can see it is a labour of love, at least up until Selling England!
