NO one in greece will speak Greek with you, when they notice that you have a non Greek accent. They answer to you automatically in English, even if you try to speak Greek or even if you tell them to speak Greek. They won't, they will switch to English...it is because of tourism. The opposite happens in France, Italy, Spain or even Turkish...you must learn their language!
Personally, I've been to a foreigh country in which the language was French. A lot of times they responded in English. The thing is I don't think they did it out of racism but because they wanted to help me or make it easier for me.
I agree. It is nice that they try to help us foreigners by speaking English. But...at the same time I have had multiple occasions where Greeks have said something like 'your Greek is very bad...just speak English'...When I told one person that I was learning Greek he laughed and said 'haha, well it's going to take you ten years.'Hmm, not very encouraging...
I'll second that. I lived there for 4 years, learned the language fluently, with hardly any accent, yet somehow they picked up on my being a foreigner, perhaps the clothes, and always spoke to me in English.
Your accents and intonation are near perfect. It seems you pay attention and are able to internalise/copy the rhythm of the spoken language. I'm guessing with a couple of months in Greece you would become indistinguishable from a native.
Καλώς ήρθατε στην Ελλάδα! Herzlich Willkommen in Griechenland ! Ihr seid die Besten, wenn Ihr nochmal nach Thessaloniki kommt, müsst ihr mir auf jeden Fall bescheidsagen . Viele Grüße an beide!
Is weird to see places in camera that I walk by every day

This is so true and I feel like it really slows down my learning Greek
Panos Jay it is because we like to make our tourists feel at ease

It's funny how greeks as well as a lot of others find it extremely difficult(almost impossible) to pronounce the "schwa" sound or the short i

Thanks Lucas! We'd love to add Greek one day 🇬🇷
