I've really been enjoying this series of videos on Leela Chess Zero (and the earlier ones on AlphaZero too) - and yes, I think I do learn something from each one. :) Thanks Jerry!
I did get the BC4 move. Reason 1 - I guessed that it was probably a sacrifice. 2 - I remember Anand Aronian game 2013 had a similar move. It was a just a blind guess tho. Great video as always!
From watching Leela and Alpha Zero, I feel like there is some big possibilities in strategies involving killing the opponents Bishops by messing with their pawn structure. That Bishop sacrifice killed the entire Queen side of Black’s board. Maybe one day we could see more GMs emulate this in their play. Anyways thank you always for the great content Jerry.
The way these engines do it require SO much calculation though, I don't think a human brain is even capable of calculating so many lines at once. But yeah, I wish it was possible too cause it makes for amazing games!
Thinking of it, Levon Aronian actually played a game that was somewhat reminiscent of this where he gave up the exchange and a pawn to just isolate the black queen out of the game. It ended in a draw, but that was a beautiful showcase aswell
Ninnifier O.o, me too. Only because of the title of the video and seeing that revealed check by black's Bishop, I'm like "yeah, that's something a human would never do I'll bet it's Bc4..."
I saw it instantly, and I was like: "It's probably Bc4, I have no clue why it's good, but it probably is." It's so funny, because a lot of the time I see a really deep great move, but then I don't see the continuation that makes it a good move lol.
No human as white would be able to convert without some luck, after bishop to c4. Black is going to be able to trade the position down in a human vs human game.
I was actually thinking about Bc4 because I was looking for a way to defend against the discovered check and to disrupt the black passed pawns at the same time. And because you were saying stuff like "you will never guess this move", I was looking for crazy ways to do that. No chance I could have seen whether it was a good move, though, and no chance I would have ever even considered it while playing a game. This is a "you get it because you know it's a special move" type move.
i really love the leela sacrificial strategy. We already seen this in others games from leela and this impress me every time. Thoses games are extremly instructives. Please keep it going
Seems like leela is already above human level. Im especially impressed by the way it plays in. Its much easier to follow the game then any other classical chess software. There seems to be a motif and a clear theme permeating and its play. Referred to as "human like moves" by some people. Thanks for making these videos Jerry by the way :) thumbs up
Even before you're asking about pop quiz, i was thinking the same to sacrifice white bishop. Recently watching so many games of Leela and my game strategy also change from defense to attack. Great Game and Great Analysis.
I came up with Bc4 not 'cause I understood the move, but because it was the most incredible and a little bit intuitive move. Thanks for the video Jerry!!
I think, in such situations it is important to look through possibilities of black side to return gained material in order to avoid problems they faces in the game. For example, take one of the e-f white's pawns by black bishop. Anyway this piece almost useless, so black could do this. This "counter-sacrafice" can be done in different ways, some of them should be discussed But anyway, video is great as always, thank you :)
a mistake by Stockfish 6 in this game was after b4 by leela, sf6 replied with c5-c4. Evaluation was +1.82 at depth 33. a5 should've been played in reply to b4
Jerry. I love these Leela Chess videos. Really fresh strategies and insights. I find that Leela and Alpha Zero in particular do a really good job at evaluating positions where they are down piece-wise, but the opposing pieces do not contribute.
I had stockfish 8 running on the side, it needs a minute to realise how good the moves from Leela are, it sometimes showed her losing, and then changing the evaluation to ~0, or from losing to winning even. Amazing what Leela has shown us. I wanna see AlphaZero vs Leela!
I love that you showed small opening traps that us, mortals, could easily fall in, but those computers are WAYYYYYY ahead of those moves and explaining them would be irrelevant in this "4000 elo" context I learned so much (i'm a "beginner", i mean, i play chess regurarly but i was oblivious to the opening traps you showed)
Funny, when you said 'I wonder how many of you are gonna come up with this', Bc4 was the first move that came to my mind. However, I did not see white's pawn move as a follow-up. I only saw Bc4 dxc4 Qxc4+ Be6, so I abandoned the thought. Great video as always, Jerry, you are doing such a fine work by all these analyses! (This is just one of the many ways this comment could have ended, pick your favourite one.)
Very in depth and teaching, detailed to every grain, but i cant watch the whole thing without being on 1.5 speed as my only criticism is how some sections of explanation are drawn out although you teach me a lot.
One of the most beautiful bishop sacrifices ever! Makes so much sense - if Black gets his pawns rolling it's game over for White. Makes sense, but not easy to find
A recurring theme in some games for Leela and Alpha Zero is the way they go about paralysing some of their opponents pieces in the same way that Karpov did in some of his more famous games. However, Karpov seldom played the deep strategic sacrifices that Leela and Alpha Zero play.
What an insanely deep move (B-c4). These AI's have an amazing ability to make these crazy sacs to put the opponent in an almost zewswang position. Amazing how they can calculate that the extra material is more then made up for in the opponent having all their pieces tied down. Very impressive chess!
Ms Zero loves her pawns! Leela seems to have figured out how to value her pawns and pieces depending their mobility in the actual position. That’s not a sacrifice of a bishop it’s a trade, an average bishop for a monster pawn pair. The hardest thing for us humans is to compare apples to oranges, AI no problem.
When you ask for pop quizes I always check the weirdest moves, because I'm always a bit suspicious. And I actually saw Bc4, but thought that was totally insane, so I just clicked play again to see what it would be, knowing I was wrong anyway. In a game I would never even come up with this, not even close. But in a pop quiz the craziest moves are on my radar haha
I came up with the Bc4 move, but only because I saw that the black c pawn could be pushed with check, and I realized that sacrificing the bishop there could stop that advance. However, I did not come close to working out the rest of the calculations.
For me, it was between h3 and Bc4. First, there isn't really a great prophylactic king move or blocking move for the inevitable c4+. Playing h3 would allow Kh1 next, since it prevents Nxh2 (cannot be captured without h3 due to Qh4+). On the other hand, Bc4 blocks c4 directly, attacks the pinned d-pawn, and sets up the f5 advance as mentioned in the video. In my opinion, it's pretty close between the two moves - I think either is playable with a slight advantage for white.
At just over the 5 min mark when the discussion is regarding if the dark square bishops were exchanged, how should white recapture -> pawn or rook.. it has has to be pawn. For the reason Jerry said, but also, if you took with the rook, you would simply be dropping the f4 pawn, no?
I found it!! But rather than claiming an easy victory (! but actually this move accomplishes a lot. There's the downside of dropping a bishop for zero material, but it's so forcing for black's play that it has to be at least a candidate move), I'd like to point out that in the commentary, 18. Bd4 looked out to me as a rather mysterious move even before the quizz. it's begging for black to activate a rather strong duo, almost immediately engages into a bishop exchange proposal, and it's a move that offers zero flexibility, the game continuation is almost forced and if white didn't have that 20. Bc4!! ressource, I think it's a refutation that Stockfish is headed into. So, found it, but only because Leela put my hands on her bishop. Take that, Stockfish!
I guessed Bd4 and after cxd4 Bd3, idea is the same but after seeing the move, Bc4 is defenitely better gaining one tempo and getting rid of the passed pawn.
Probably the most instructive game ever. This is my mums account I just had to say this. Hahaha . I know its engines and stuff but didn't leela have a chance to trap the queen or potentially completely upset the queens side pawn structure at an early point in the game. Pawn a4 threatening pawn b4 to trap the queen. Stock fish would have to push there a pawn to stop the a5 white pawn push. Suppose there is more important things on the table Haha.
The idea behind the bishop move Bc4 is tempo. After the follow-up f5 Black needs three moves (at least) to liberate the bishop on c8 and the rook on a8. In addition to 3 tempi, white gets a connected passed pawn on the 6th rank and an attack on the king. The initiative is just too strong. Very hard to find this move and even harder to prove it's correct.
I think the rook on f3 was looking over the shoulder of the pawn on f5, for if ever black decides to counter-sacrifice his light-square bishop, the pawn on f6 would certainly be destroyed, which would open the long diagonal and end the game very quickly for black.
With it being Leela, I was thinking of ridiculous moves, and thought of Bc4 for that very reason of blocking the discovery check and coordination with the Knight. I would never consider this in a game, but wowee.
I didn't guess the bishop move, but when I saw it I remembered another game where Leela using the same doubled up pawns as a wall to block the bishop in. AIs seem to be big fans of using your own pawns against you.
Chess engines like Stockfish and Leela are CLI (command-line interface) based and needs GUI (graphical user interface) such as Arena Chess and Fritz to operate. Most of these engines use UCI protocol to communicate with the GUI, and said protocol has no resign feature implemented. Most GUIs have auto-adjudication feature enabled in case of clear winning of one side, for example both engines agree that one side is leading by 9 pawns (or 900 centipawns), which is probably true in this case. Many people runs engine vs engine matches over hundreds or even thousands of games, auto-adjudication helps in saving time instead of letting these engine finish the whole game.
The latest Stockfish development version seems to think that 30... c4 is a mistake and better was bxa4 with a flat 0.00, while c4 leads to a +1.3 for white.
I wonder if Leela's king maneuver near the end is to get the king out of striking range of the bishops while taking advantage of Black's lack of room to move. (No need to get there directly when Black is bottled up like that.)

I've really been enjoying this series of videos on Leela Chess Zero (and the earlier ones on AlphaZero too) - and yes, I think I do learn something from each one. :) Thanks Jerry!
What about a game with Leela winning as black? ;)
Øistein Søvik check out Kingscusher he did a video where she beat stockfish 9 with the black pieces
It's an it not a she, and that was Stockfish 6. it doesn't stand a chance against stockfish 9 or 10,calculations are way too deep for it.
I second that fburton8
13:21 - I know Leela is brilliant but even I'd be impressed if she could move her bishop like that!
14:28
i think leela did that so the white king/queen could see each other a last time before the war thickened
Beautiful 😂
Bruh
13:18 nice hax 😉
Mr GM_Carlsen lol thanks for pointing it out
You can move the bishop like that if you are a GM
@@ginoginoh or Justin Bieber
13:18 - that black bishop boldly attacking the king on a white square cracked me up for some reason. xD
13:25 Nice arrow drawing for the bishop 😂😂😂
hahahaa i almost died
I am a simple man. I see Jerry and leela together I press like.
one of my OTPs
Leela x Jerry fanfiction needs to exist.
Please continue with these highly instructive games !
Now when i blunder my bishop in bullet i can say im as good as leela (;
I did get the BC4 move. Reason 1 - I guessed that it was probably a sacrifice. 2 - I remember Anand Aronian game 2013 had a similar move. It was a just a blind guess tho. Great video as always!
This is sensational, really. Excellent work by Jerry as usual, which we have grown accustomed with

The play is certainly an eye opener. Thank you
Alpha0 used to crush the light square bishop, but leela0 crushed the entire queenside pieces!! So aggressive..
Delivered with your usual clarity. Keep making videos!
I guessed the bishop move but I had no idea *why* it would be a good move. It just looked so ridiculous so I chose it 😂
Ninnifier O.o, me too. Only because of the title of the video and seeing that revealed check by black's Bishop, I'm like "yeah, that's something a human would never do I'll bet it's Bc4..."

BeEJayLetsPlay Yeah, I'd say 50% of my losses are me spotting a deep sacrifice, haha. Who has time to read lines? Let's see if it works
No human as white would be able to convert without some luck, after bishop to c4. Black is going to be able to trade the position down in a human vs human game.
Same
This is what is known as a "positional sacrifice." Great job by Leela, and an excellent job presenting and analyzing this game by the uploader.
Jerry, I absolutely love your analysis and commentary style - the best IMO. Many thanks for your excellent videos.
For the viewers who may be confused, you must be a GM to move a bishop like that @13:20
Another great video, Thanks Jerry!
Really enjoying the frequency and quality of these videos! Thanks Jerry, keep it up :)
It's crazy watching you analyze a bullet game that's played better than two super GMs in classical time format.
Leela out here playing 4D chess on a 2D board
😎
That is very poetic. Nice!
I was actually thinking about Bc4 because I was looking for a way to defend against the discovered check and to disrupt the black passed pawns at the same time. Schliemann briefly rose from grave and applauded this game
Even before you're asking about pop quiz, i was thinking the same to sacrifice white bishop. Recently watching so many games of Leela and my game strategy also change from defense to attack. Great Game and Great Analysis.
Nice! 😎
13:28 i like the pressure from the dark square bishop 😂
I guess that was a tiny mistake jerry :D
Still very enjoyable video of course
You mean an inaccuracy?! This is chess after all, inaccuracies are going to happen eventually
I came up with Bc4 not 'cause I understood the move, but because it was the most incredible and a little bit intuitive move. Thanks for the video Jerry!!

21 bc4 is a stunner. Blew my socks off! Leela doesn’t mess about. Especially when she’s playing chess.

Savva Lakichevich and Leela had 1 minute for the whole game.
Absolutely unbelievable Bishop sac there, yet also very reasonable of course, afterwards. Very deep and creative programming this Leela Zero
I love that you showed small opening traps that us, mortals, could easily fall in, but those computers are WAYYYYYY ahead of those moves and explaining them would be irrelevant in this "4000 elo" context
I learned so much (i'm a "beginner", i mean, i play chess regurarly but i was oblivious to the opening traps you showed)

Great game. Great commentary. Great production quality.
21 Bc4!! If that was played by a world champion in a title match it would go down as one of the greatest moves in chess history.
Thanks Jerry!! Much love
No way I saw bishop c4 😂 I definitely learned a lot from this game. Love your videos Jerry!
Love the breakdowns or potential thought process for the game on uncertain or unforeseen moves throughout. Awesome video!
Just subbed your channel 👍
Very in depth and teaching, detailed to every grain, but i cant watch the whole thing without being on 1.5 speed as my only criticism is how some sections of explanation are drawn out although you teach me a lot.
Great content you’re makin lately Jerry. Keep it up, and I did actually predict the bc4 move.
Nice 😊
One of the most beautiful bishop sacrifices ever! Makes so much sense - if Black gets his pawns rolling it's game over for White. Makes sense, but not easy to find
I'm jealous of your warm clear confident friendly voice.
Great analysis Jerry, thank you so much !
Thank you Yusuf.
A great promo like description for this video.....great effort and good commentary following u from 1 k subs........
More Leela reviews, please. Really mind-blowing chess games from "her."
Hi Jerry, this is everyone: We love you, Jerry!
instructive as always, jerry. Thanks for these!

Still come back and watch this, one of the nastiest games I’ve ever seen
that was a fascinating video. The bishop sacrifice for positional gain. WOW
You are an excellent commentator and analyzer Thanks a lot.
Super cool analysis. This was instructive
Nice pick of games, Jerry! which leads to moves never even considered.
Great video as always. And the quiz before Bc4 - I must say great trolling...
This was a really cool game. I always learn a lot from these!
Loving the daily uploads!
I came up with that wild bishop move when I watched this video for the second time! Wow! I must be really good at this!
Thanks Jerri, love this series 👍
Jerry, you rock. Thanks again, man.
Wowzers! Bc4! This type of sacrifice is out of this world!
This was great! More games like this, please
I'm looking at this again two years later and I still didn't find Bc4. Wow. What a move!
Lela and Jerry sitting on a tree....

Their child is paranoid, a bit Leery.

Nice game. Interesting to ponder the mystery moves!
What a quiz at 6:30! No one would play like this!
13:20 Jerry does one of his fancy bishop diagonals again!
I don't know how long it will take but it is very clear to me that Leela it is on its way to be an alpha zero. thanks for the video Jerry
These are just phenomenal players. Smarter than human beings

I most definitely didn't see that sacrifice, wow! What a move

13:19 that's quite the line for that dark square bishop!
That Bishop sacrifice is really "not human" =)
It's possible I would have found the Bishop move if you gave me 100 guesses... but I couldn't have told you why. Nice analysis, by the way.
Amazing game! Thank you for sharing it.
13:19 bishop, seems legit
You know what I’d like to see are some odds games of Leela Zero vs Stockfish 9. Maybe pawn odds.
I found it!!
But rather than claiming an easy victory (! but actually this move accomplishes a lot. There's the downside of dropping a bishop for zero material, but it's so forcing for black's play that it has to be at least a candidate move), I'd like to point out that in the commentary,
18. Bd4
looked out to me as a rather mysterious move even before the quizz. it's begging for black to activate a rather strong duo, almost immediately engages into a bishop exchange proposal, and it's a move that offers zero flexibility, the game continuation is almost forced and if white didn't have that
20. Bc4!!
ressource, I think it's a refutation that Stockfish is headed into.
Hahaha . I know its engines and stuff but didn't leela have a chance to trap the queen or potentially completely upset the queens side pawn structure at an early point in the game. that was thrilling, thank you!
I like the way the opening code and name stated in the given PGN
why couldnt stockfish play move 32:Bxe6?
With it being Leela, I was thinking of ridiculous moves, and thought of Bc4 for that very reason of blocking the discovery check and coordination with the Knight. I would never consider this in a game, but wowee.
Can someone explain why did the sacrifice enable white to advance the 2 pawns? Couldn't white advance the pawns without the sacrifice?
I didn't guess the bishop move, but when I saw it I remembered another game where Leela using the same doubled up pawns as a wall to block the bishop in. AIs seem to be big fans of using your own pawns against you.
So Stockfish made a move then resigned? And anyone saying they saw that sacrifice is suspect. LOL
What good could possible come out of resigning for an engine instead of letting it play out the game?
Nabil thanks for the explanation.
I got a lot out of the video. Thank you
The latest Stockfish development version seems to think that 30... c4 is a mistake and better was bxa4 with a flat 0.00, while c4 leads to a +1.3 for white.
We die for those vids
I wonder if Leela's king maneuver near the end is to get the king out of striking range of the bishops while taking advantage of Black's lack of room to move. (No need to get there directly when Black is bottled up like that.)
