The UK Has Lost 90% of Its Wetlands | Restoring Nature with the Cotswold Canals Connected Project

- Over the past 200 years, the UK has lost more than 90% of its wetlands. To help reverse this decline, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust has partnered with Stroud District Council, Cotswold Canals Trust, and many other organisations, with funding support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, on the Cotswold Canals Connected (CCC) project.
This project aims to be the first canal restoration in the UK to achieve Biodiversity Net Gain. It will not only restore the currently derelict canal for boat traffic, but also create blue-green corridors that support ecosystem recovery, strengthen the Nature Recovery Network, and improve habitats between Saul Junction and Stonehouse in response to development and climate change.
Many volunteers worked hard on on restoration efforts across various sites, and we’d like to take a moment to celebrate the positive changes we’ve seen over the past year.
Watch this short film about this incredible project, and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
What a fabulous video - well done Pete and Chris! At SVP, we're really proud to be part of this project; our volunteers can see the difference they're making for nature. Keep up the good work, everyone, and thanks to players of the National Lottery and to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for making it possible.
We're so pleased to be working with you, all our other partners, and of course our fabulous volunteers to bring this incredible and important project to life. And there's even more to come!!! 🥳🥳🥳
One of the most important initiatives that could be done, nature wise.
Thank you for making my day.
Reclaim as much as you can.
Looks a really exciting project, more wetland habitat certainly needed in this area. I look forward to seeing what species it draws in as it develops
Absolutely love what they're doing in restoring the canal. I didn't realise it was already in place & as an avid wildlife watcher (and CCT member!) I'm looking forward to going down to see it all.
Lost wetlands is what has led to regular flooding elsewhere. Can only improve flood risk by restoring capacity of wetlands to hold back floodwater.
